1/14/2004: Crappie New Year

Reuters sez that Three Polish divers faced a police investigation Thursday for possible illegal fishing and animal abuse after a news photo showed them plying a freshly caught pike with champagne at an outdoor New Year's party.

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmp...poland_pike_dc

I'm all for environmental and animal protection but this is seriously PETA-esque. Couldn't they just say they were pre-marinating it?

jinx  Wednesday Jan 14 03:05 PM

I hope it didn't backwash. Ick.

Brigliadore  Wednesday Jan 14 03:09 PM

Wow, who knew getting a fish drunk could be a crime. Maybe the fish attempted to drive its self home.

I'm all in favor of a 12 step program for fish.

lumberjim  Wednesday Jan 14 04:38 PM

how many polocks does it take to get a fish drunk?

Beletseri  Wednesday Jan 14 04:49 PM

Well they have a point. Taking a live fish and forcing it to drink alcohol probably isn't the kindest way to behave.

It is one thing to catch a fish to eat but another to catch it just to torture it.

I don't know that I think it is something that needs to be treated as a criminal offense though.

lumberjim  Wednesday Jan 14 04:50 PM

do you think they took advantage of it after they got it drunk?

That fish looks under-age. I think we are looking a statutory fish rape and intoxication of a minor fish.

In all seriousness the sites says the fish was half dead, which I tend to believe given the fact they were able to catch it with their bare hands. Prob. would have died either way. Maybe the alcohol helped ease its passing. I don't think its worth pressing charges.

Sun_Sparkz  Wednesday Jan 14 06:16 PM

Torturing a fish/ a polar bear/ an ant or a human.. its all the same to me.

These wankers should be punished.

lumberjim  Wednesday Jan 14 06:20 PM

torture?

"it's ok to fish, cuz they don't feel any pain"....kurt cobain

"Its ok to eat fish cuz they dont have any feelings". Kurt Cobain. I wouldnt go taking nirvana lyrics as a guide to life.

why do they struggle when you catch them? why do they hide from their predators in the weed? why do they try to escape their tank?

Just cause they dont talk, doesnt mean they cant feel, think and hurt. same goes for any animal.

ndetroit  Wednesday Jan 14 06:33 PM

There have actually been quite a few interesting findings in the last year or so indicating that fish *do* in fact feel pain..

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/sci/tech/2983045.stm

Good article, indicating that not only do the fish exhibit physiological effects from pain (modified chemical receptors, etc, similar to humans), but they also will exhibit modified behaviors based on pain stimuli..

I still eat fish though.

hmmm.

Happy Monkey  Wednesday Jan 14 06:35 PM

It's OK to eat fish 'cause they can't scream.

Sun_Sparkz  Wednesday Jan 14 06:37 PM

SEE!!

I still eat fish as well. I eat meat and chicken too. I am not against killing humanely for consumption, but to hurt living things for fun is just demented and sick.

jinx  Wednesday Jan 14 07:20 PM

If an animal didn't feel pain, what would be it's motivation to avoid being eaten?

They did a study in 1917 (Blanton, M.G., The Behavior of the human Infant in the First 30 Days of Life, Psychological Review, vol. 24, no. 6(1917): pp.456-483.), subjected infants to pin pricks, lances, blood draws etc., and determined that they do feel pain - contrary to popular belief at the time.

Elspode  Wednesday Jan 14 08:42 PM

So...anyone know of any really good babyfishing spots?

The survival instinct isn't about avoiding pain, it's about survival.

Pain is part of the survival instinct.

Undertoad  Wednesday Jan 14 09:03 PM

Whether or not they feel pain, they certainly have a less developed nervous system than mammals. If they can't really think about their pain at advanced levels, then I say it is less meaningful.

Some plants have systems that researchers say are analogous to pain. But the feeling of pain is not what makes it ok to eat the plants and not the researchers.

So what does make it OK?

Sun_Sparkz  Wednesday Jan 14 09:28 PM

The point is not weather it is ok or not to EAT fish. Its that is wrong to inflict harm to it weather or not your going to eat it. if you catch a fish you want to eat, then good. Kill it quick and get it over with. dont make its last few hours painful, confused, scared and distraught.

quzah  Wednesday Jan 14 10:09 PM

"It's ok to blow my head off with a shotgun because no one loves me any more." -- Kurt

Ok, so I don't know that was his exact final sentence... All in all, not someone I'd model my life after. Anyone who kills themselves is not someone I want to emulate. That being said, I believe there are a few scenarios where I'd want to be dead rather than alive.

Oh, and don't be surprised when that guy gets his head bit off by a shark later in life. Or maybe we'll get lucky and he'll drown next time he's out fishing. Karma.

Quzah.

wolf  Thursday Jan 15 01:37 AM

How to tell the guys in the picture are Polish ...

Think about it.

It was 01-JAN.

In Poland.

Not a country known for it's lush greenery and tropical winters.

Wet Suit or NOT, they have to be motherfucking FREEZING.

Maybe they did eat it and they were just pre-marinating it.

Instincts. Those fish that were more likely to struggle could better survive an encounter with a predator, which means they had better chances to mate and pass their genes to the next generation. Evolution in action.

The truth is there are many better things to do before you start an investigation about possible abuse of a half-dead fish by pouring champaign into its mouth. In most likelyhood, there are thousands of industrial enterprises in Poland that kill millions of fish every year through pollution. Unless you deal with these first, this police investigation would be just a PR stunt.

I have lived my entire life to nirvana lyrics. so far so good.
"I'm so happy, cuz today, I found my friends, they're in my head."

probably should have posted that in the commonly misheard song lyrics thread, huh?

blue58  Thursday Jan 15 09:45 AM

Only on the cellar could a thread be equal parts fish pain/nirvana lyrics.

tjennings  Thursday Jan 15 12:40 PM

Did I see in an earlier post that pollock get other fish drunk?

Pi  Thursday Jan 15 04:46 PM

2 Questions :
- Are we shure we're in Poland? Shouldn't it be Vodka and no champagne (and after all these french/freedom fries discussion how do US call champagne now?)
- If we really are in Poland I think the fish will enjoy some alcool and if not maybe it was clever enough to steel their purse

Thats so unfair. you might as well say that until you can solve every _mass_ murder, dont yet worry about the singluar murders. Until you can stop mass pollution, dont yet worry about fining people who litter on the street.

lumberjim  Thursday Jan 15 07:12 PM

sparky,
do you know this fish or something? i really don;t think pouring champagne down a pike's throat can be called 'torture'. i mean, it probably just poured right out of it's gills. maybe, MAYBE the bubbles gave it a tingling sensation, but really. It's not like they were pouring drano into it.

plthijinx  Thursday Jan 15 10:20 PM

i dunno about champagne but here;s what happened when i went offshore last august with plenty of budweiser......

Sun_Sparkz  Thursday Jan 15 11:12 PM

ok, it may not of have been _torture_ but im sure it was unneccessarily scared. theres no need for that.

I'll get angry if i keep thinking about this poor fish.

enjoy your meal.

That Guy  Friday Jan 16 01:19 PM

Can't believe nobody's said it yet:
He drinks like a fish.

(unless I missed it....)

Definitely snockered to the gills.

Mkay.

Brigliadore  Thursday Jan 22 05:33 PM

A little known Ohio law:

It is illegal to get a fish drunk.
