casimendocina 01-13-2011 05:54 AM

I've found a computer I can post on the Cellar from after being unable to post from my own for several days. :)

Undertoad 01-13-2011 10:40 AM

Attn Queenslanders, or whatever you call yourselves,... my niece-in-common-law is headed your way, apparently to Cairns, QLD in a volunteer conservation effort... for her honeymoon... to restore habitat for, and measure the length of, tree frogs.

I say she should restore habitat for undertoads here at home, my siding is in real trouble, but the tree frogs are important too.

DanaC 01-14-2011 02:28 PM

Right now: my Chinese take away has arrived *hops up and down in excitement*

I'm starting with won ton soup, followed by honeyed spare ribs, then some beef chop suey with egg fried rice, and banana fritters in syrup to finish :)

[eta] the won ton soup is divine. And QI is about to start! What's more the adorable David Mitchell is in it this week. Big smile.

glatt 01-14-2011 02:29 PM

Oh man, that all sounds delicious. And I'm not even hungry.

DanaC 01-14-2011 03:04 PM

Ooohhh. Oh it really was. But, I have eaten waaaay too much lol.

I usually just have some of everything and the rest go in the fridge for next day. i just couldn't stop eating the soup and ribs :P So, have only saved chop suey and rice.

plthijinx 01-18-2011 10:50 AM

Linguistic question here ... do you still call it take away when it's delivered? For us there is a distinction between Chinese Take Out (picked up at the restaurant) and Chinese Delivery (the Yellow Peril brings it to your door).

HungLikeJesus 01-18-2011 01:35 PM

Why don't the Chinese use potatoes in their food?

xoxoxoBruce 01-18-2011 01:38 PM

They don't want to be mistaken for Irish.;)

Doesn't that make it "chinese delivery"?

Just realized the question has already been asked. However, it has yet to be answered. So I'll leave this as a bump.

Sundae 01-18-2011 03:00 PM

Any hot food made for you is a take-away, whether you take it away yourself or get it delivered.
So this covers pizza, Indian, Chinese and some small sundry shops (I can get fried chicken and fish & chips and even doner kebabs delivered here as I'm only a mile from the town centre)

Some people may distinguish I suppose.
But they're the sort of people that call geraniums pelargonians and therefore it's safe to ignore them.

plthijinx 01-18-2011 03:05 PM

Was it the coffee maker that tipped him off? I mean you are in Seattle!

Pico and ME 01-22-2011 05:09 PM

It took a few days and many many phone calls (and also pitting them against Comcast, of course) but I managed to get ATT Uverse to give me the $30 discount I wanted in order to stay with them. My sign up special ended this month and my bill increased by $30. They even threw in free HBO for 3 months. I even eliminated the phone (we are sticking with our cells for now) and added HD. So instead of paying $130 (after all taxes and fees), I'm only paying $100 for u200 (I have to have Bravo for Top Chef!) with HD and DVR (I am totally addicted to being able to record up to 4 channels at once - I can barely stand to watch anything with commercials now) in two rooms and internet. Now I can watch my new HD TV in good conscience - Ive been trying to budget.

I'm pretty satisfied.

Unfortunately its only for 6 months, so I will have to do this all over again in July.

monster 01-22-2011 09:26 PM

yesterday we got a notecard in the post. It was addressed to "neighbor", Usually means a request for donations. But no. Inside it read:

Dear Neighbor,
Thank you for keeping your Christmas lights burning! In the cold, colorless dreary winter, they are a bright spot that warms and cheers my heart and lifts my spirit each evening as I drive by.
Thanks again, a [neighborhood] resident.

Awesome, thanks, neighbor -they cheer us up too, that's why we do it. So happy to hear they work for others -we were a little worried they night piss people off because this is a "cookie cutter" neighborhood and we're heading into "way out of season".

limey 01-23-2011 11:46 AM

Our lights are still up. We all need some cheer until the days visibly lengthen!

Pico and ME 01-23-2011 12:50 PM

We didn't do outside lights this year, but our Christmas tree is still up and we turn it on every night. Actually getting ready to take it down now tho.

Griff 01-23-2011 01:17 PM

Ours is standing on the porch with juncos using it for cover.

monster 01-23-2011 07:56 PM

The tree went a while back, but we consider the outside lights "winter" lights and usually keep them on until late Jan/early Feb. They don't come down 'til easter, though -too damn cold!

Nirvana 01-23-2011 09:04 PM

That was a great teaser but plthijinx did you get the job?

plthijinx 01-23-2011 09:46 PM

Razzmatazz13 01-25-2011 12:26 PM

We got a house!!! Yaaaay!! Now all I have to do is figure out how to move me, my car, and all my things to the complete opposite side of the country ASAP. Nothin' big...

Sundae 01-25-2011 01:42 PM

Congrats Razz!
Oh and good luck - still, as moves go at least it's worth it when you're being reunited.

monster 01-25-2011 02:39 PM

Hey SG, any progress on the background check thing? Speaking of things that will make you happy.

plthijinx 01-25-2011 02:56 PM

plthijinx 01-26-2011 07:50 AM

despite the fact that it's a little chilly outside, for the first time in about 5 years i'm going fishing near galveston today. see if i can't bring home some speckled trout, redfish and black drum to toss on the grill!

Sundae 01-26-2011 12:11 PM

I GOT MY ENHANCED CRB IN THE POST TODAY!
I CAN FINALLY START WORK!

WOOOHOOOOOO!

And I'd been in a subdued mood all day, and was in town for my Job Centre 6 month interview, and when I left I needed to buy some salad. I debated the whole time walking around the supermarket whether to walk halfway home and go to the newsagent where I always used to buy drink (they are 10p a can cheaper than my local shop).

I really was on the brink of buying some cans for tonight, but managed to keep my feet moving in the direction of the bus stop, so that I sailed gaily past the shop. So right now I feel so glad I didn't succumb, as I can feel glowy and proud as well as simply glad I will start work asap.

monster 01-26-2011 12:12 PM

yeehah!

glatt 01-26-2011 12:13 PM
