My back! I pulled something this morning and it hurt so bad i could hardly move and was whimpering like a wet kitten. I thought I was for sure PT bound (I have degeneration of the spine and a history of this type of injury....)

After two hours icing, I could move to go to the bathroom and take a shower. it still felt a little dodgy, but I decided to move around a litle and just be sure to bend at the knees ets...... It's all better now! :) So happy

(odds on waking up unavble to move tomorrow........ )

Sorry to hear this, Monster. Back pain can be a real b*tch. I've seen my mom and a few others with back pain. Hope you get better soon.

http://cellar.org/2012/pearl2.jpg

Pearl is already overexposed. But anyway.

These shots are one second before, one second after. What I did between was to call her name. "Pearl!"

She doesn't want to be interrupted, basking in the sun as she does. But on hearing her name, she opens her eyes and twists her left ear 90 degrees.

That means she heard her name, which is the amazing part. Pearl has been deaf for the last few months. She never heard her name or any whistles or commands. But now, for some reason, there she is, hearing!

My dog's hearing has returned, seemingly gone from 100% deaf to only 90% overnight. That makes me happy because it is a calming influence on her. Her behavior changed when she went deaf; she wants to keep an eye on me and follow me around, but when deaf she couldn't always identify changes in her surroundings. It would alarm her.

I took her for a vet visit a month ago to address her hearing loss, and they pretty much said, she seems otherwise normal, and there's nothing blocking her ears, so... well, geriatric dogs go deaf all the time. (Pearl's vet is the best in the area.)

But do dogs go un-deaf?

glatt 09-10-2012 11:21 AM

That's cool!

DanaC 09-10-2012 11:23 AM

Dante was deaf pretty much for the last two or three years of his life. But in that time, there were periods when his hearing seemed a little returned. I think it is a little like with humans, in that it's often a matter of being unable to pick out specific sounds and tones , rather than a complete loss of all sound.

She may have some small amount of hearing still there, but that is then affected by intime stuff (ear infections, local noise levels etc, tiredness).

[eta] lovely pair of photos Toad. She looks so sweet. An the slight movement of eyes and ears is cute.

Razzmatazz13 09-10-2012 11:25 AM

Yay for Pearl!! :)

I met a blind and deaf doggy once... she "saw" by hanging her head to the ground so her ears would touch and then swung her head back and forth. She was a sweetheart but I can't imagine what it'd be like as an owner to watch your dog go through that. :(

DanaC 09-10-2012 11:28 AM

It has its funny moments, having a deaf dog. Like when you're running across a playing field waving your arms about like a complete knob, intermittently clapping your hands together (the sharp sound sometimes got through) as the dog completely ignores you and continues following the wrong person home ;P

Undertoad 09-10-2012 11:36 AM

She gets a Greenie bone for her good work hearing.

http://cellar.org/2012/pearlgreenie.jpg

DanaC 09-10-2012 11:37 AM

Awwwww, look at her. How much is she enjoying that bone?

[eta] I've seen those toothbrush bone thingies in the pet store. Was always a bit edgy about them possibly upsetting his tum.

Undertoad 09-10-2012 11:48 AM

I've given her one a day for years, never had a problem. All the dog people around here seem to feel that Greenies are good and very digestible.

I do think they help her teeth. She still has them all. She has some tartar buildup on her back teeth, but the vet won't clean them, because she can't go under sedation due to her heart condition.

Gravdigr 09-10-2012 11:54 AM

A guy I used to work with had a Dalmation. He said for two years he thought she was the stupidest dog that ever lived. Then he figured out she was stone deaf.

I guess we know who was stupid, now.

Undertoad 09-10-2012 12:11 PM

Yeah that's a major thing with Dalmations. Only 70% of Dals have normal hearing and the breed organization says deaf puppies should be put down.

It seems like some breeds should not really be bred. English Bulldogs are totally awesome, but they have major health issues as they get older and they don't live very long. Great Danes only live 6-8 years. It's very sad.

It comes from sitting too close to the siren.

Aliantha 09-10-2012 06:31 PM

She might have felt the vibration of your voice if you were standing on the same patch of concrete UT. Specially since she was lying flat out on it.

Undertoad 09-10-2012 06:34 PM

Oh, no that's a carpet remnant, on top of tall grass in an exercise pen in the backyard.

Aliantha 09-10-2012 06:41 PM

Ah well, maybe not the vibration then. :)

DanaC 09-11-2012 07:08 AM

Does she hear if you clap your hands?

DanaC 09-11-2012 07:16 AM

Carrot was playing with an Old English Sheepdog today. Was nice to see him looking small lol. I'm so used to seeing him as a giant puppeh, towering over adult westies and much heavier than the local collies.

Beautiful dog too. Cropped short, so you could see the powerful, lean OES build. And mismatched eyes, one brown and one ice blue like a husky's eye. Enormous black nose. I forgot how big the OES nose is. Broad but tapered muzzle and powerful head too.

Made me happy, because I so rarely see OES these days. They were really common when I was a kid. There was one I adored when I was 6 or 7, that used to live around the corner. So much so that when I was 9 and we got a puppy after four years of no furry pets, I gave him the same name: Wellington.

Happy memories, and lovely to see Carrot playing with a big dog.

Undertoad 09-11-2012 10:19 AM

Pearl's hearing seems to get better! Clapping is the least I need to do... she can now hear, looks right up out of a nap, if I call her name in an ordinary voice.

I have a Kindle!
Arrived from Scotland with plenty of books already loaded.
I am so grateful.

And a postcard of Lenin who is watching over my bookshelf with a determined eye.
He doesn't give away what he thinks. Old poker-face.

Hey... Been awhile since I've been around these parts. Guess you can say I got tired of looking a porn and decided to drop by and tell you that I still think Obama sucks - That's okay though because Romney blows. Looks like I'm going to have to do a write in this election year but I think Reagan already died. Carter's still around but he sucks too. I wonder if Jesse Jackson is on the ticket this year? Hmm???

Anyway, the reason I posted that crap in this thread is... because it made me happy.

I'm celebrating too... I've been a member of this overly liberal forum for just over six years and so far I haven't been man-raped by a homosexual yet. However, I still have the hots for Dana if she's still around...

How 'bout it Dana??? :doit:

My luck... She'll say... :finger:

Hi Madman :P

Sundae 09-19-2012 04:02 PM

Cookery Club today. Tiger was so happy to be there. I've volunteered to do both KS1 and KS2, so it's not just because he's signed up. Fills up two evenings a week.

Slight snag - the new "cookery area" is completely full of boxes and filing and the new oven is not fit for purpose. We've been using the one in the staffroom, which is a long walk from the classroom where we are prepping and children are not allowed inside (mostly because teachers are still working in there after school). Still, I have had said oven's failure witnessed by the two teachers running the clubs, so am confident something will be done. No-one pays for an oven they can't use. Except perhaps Jessica Simpson.

Rabbit is in the KS1 club too, which is great fun. I like all the childer in it - and I know them all well, so I know what is normal behaviour vs being upset or tired or showing off and can deal accordingly. Don't know the KS2 ones quite as well, but I am getting there. I know the sensible ones certainly.

Have been looking up no-bake/ practically no-bake (cheese straws @ 8 minutes for example with lots on one tray) recipes this evening. Sure the teachers will do their own research but as you know I really enjoy baking, so it's never going to be wasted time.

Also Tiger today said, "Cool potatoes."
As far as I know, only my brother and I say this. And I don't even remember why. So it has definitely come from me. I shouldn't feel happy infecting him with my verbal tics, but it really did make me smile. If he was using it all the time it would be different, but once in a while is... well, cool potatoes.

JESUS HAS RETURNED!

I know you've all been waiting for the return of our lord and savior. Since Jebus burned down in June of 2010 it seemed there was a hole in the holy landscape along I-75 near Monroe OH.

But as promised the son of god has returned.

But WAIT...where's his holy head?

It's coming it's coming. It's right by one of the feet.

I think the finished Jebus has a bit of a jaunty hip, don't you? This is the kind of Jebus you could hang out with, have some drinks.

For those who missed the original story, look here:

Complete with a slideshow of the burning lord.

I hope this one isn't made of styrofoam and cotton.

infinite monkey 09-20-2012 09:03 AM

ps This really deserved its own thread. Rats.

Undertoad 09-20-2012 09:10 AM

I prefer this open-armed, welcoming Jebus to the previous one. I also like how he's wearing a long skirt.

This is the right thread because it's part of the second coming of Madman.

infinite monkey 09-20-2012 09:17 AM

True. With this new one, I can almost believe that Jebus loves the little children, all the little children of the world...

Sundae 09-20-2012 12:58 PM

.. but he's not in the bath this time!?
Nor wearing the means of his own torture and death penalty.
Tcha. Talk about doing things by half.

Great update though Infi, thanks.

Looks like he's sizing up a juicy pair of bazookas to me. Touch Down Jesus has been replaced by touch up Jesus

Trilby 09-24-2012 12:21 PM

we drove by him yesterday. Mom said he looked a little chubby; like he'd been to too many pot - lucks at the church. All those hash-brown casseroles and scalloped 'taters.

Matthew 18

From Stinque Zombie Bible

18:1 At the same time came the chosen hoard unto Zombie Jesus, saying, Who is the greatest in the kingdom of the undead?
18:2 And Jesus called a headless zombie unto him, and set him in the midst of them,
18:3 And said, Verily I say unto you, Except ye be turned, and become as headless zombies, ye shall not enter into the kingdom of the undead.
18:4 Whosoever therefore shall numb himself as this headless zombie, the same is fleshiest in the kingdom of the undead.
18:5 And who so shall feed on one such headless zombie in my name feeds on me.

footfootfoot 10-03-2012 10:17 PM

Just tuned into this thread since I've not been all that happy lately and fuck all of youse who is.

Then I find out Scotland is giving out free kindles. Not that I really wanted one, but still, I can't believe I missed out on that.

Then I find out that contrary to popular opinion, modern medicine is a good thing. I'm going to bed now.

I am happy that it's hunting season and I may be able to go out and hunt. I drew 2, count them, 2 doe permits this year, in addition to my regular buck, antlerless, and either sex deer. Doe permits are on a lottery basis.

I miss out on all sorts of things, all the time. And maybe modern medicine is good (it saved my life in '86) and maybe sometimes not so much (as I ponder the wreck of my post-surgical experience in the past month).

But. Good, amazing things can still happen. So if you drew two doe permits in the lottery, happy hunting. A good, even amazing, day may still be in store for you.

Deer Abby,

I have a friend, a deer friend, who is about to be shot and made into jerky. The problem is that it's my other friend who is going to shoot. He wants to mount the head.

Should I be concerned? Should I warn my deer friend?

Sincerely,

Blocka Sault

monster 10-04-2012 10:40 PM

Deer Blocka,

you want to prevent a head-mounting?

cock-blocka!

You're just bucking responsibility for your horniness.

Griff 10-05-2012 05:12 PM

So Pete (the Billy Goat) got horny and busted out last night. When I went outside to feed and milk this morning Benny (the baby border collie) was holding him in the yard by running around him barking if he moved. I walked over opened the shed door and in ran Pete. Smart little dog that.
