I delayed light by 127 microseconds. It was all worthwhile.

Cicero 03-17-2009 09:19 PM

Me too. It's called the snooze button....uuugh.........

Pie 03-17-2009 09:19 PM

Did you delay the light by making the photons pass through a spiral tunnel coiled outside the radius of capture of the atoms in the glass?

4 spiral tunnels, but I think you sussed it. I also dispersion-compensated it for a NRZ-10Gbit signal and provided only 16.84dB of loss. Not too shabby, considering the DCM had an insertion loss of 6.3 dB!

classicman 03-18-2009 01:21 PM

I love it when you talk technical!

It reads great even when I have NO IDEA what you're talking about.

monster 03-18-2009 01:23 PM

Sprials are making me happy too. I passed my backwards inside edges on a line and all 4 forwards spirals on an edge. :D

HungLikeJesus 03-18-2009 01:32 PM

How much did that delay the light?

dar512 03-18-2009 01:50 PM

Well, the delay was actually due to heavy traffic in the third bend of the spiral. (Due to a Critical Mass wavicle ride)

Protons were still getting through on the express lanes, however.

Now, if you could only get light to speed up, that'd really be something! Work on that one for next week.

glatt 03-18-2009 02:03 PM

Just by a few nanoseconds, even. Shouldn't be that hard.

Decca 03-18-2009 03:11 PM

If the speed of light is the fastest velocity attainable, making light faster will certainly give "Y'all better get your asses moving at LIGHTSPEED" a whole new definition... and less attainability :D

Two things are making me happy today:

My best friend and I are OK again, at last.

I met a guy who has everything in common with my best friend, but he's available and interested.

Yea! I'm glad you guys made up. It sucks when people you love are mad at you and won't talk to you.

dar512 03-19-2009 05:08 PM

There's a protest march in downtown Chicago today. We got this notice from the building people:

"The Office of the Building has been notified by BOMA Chicago that a protest march demanding more responsible corporate behavior and action from Congress will take place later this afternoon."

This is why I love working downtown. I sit and read during my short commute, they sometimes hand out free stuff at the station, and from time to time there's free entertainment.

What a town.

sugarpop 03-19-2009 07:14 PM

Isn't Chicago one of the most green cities in the US?
I've never been there, but always wanted to visit.

You mean because of all the Irish?

sugarpop 03-19-2009 07:21 PM

No, I mean green, as in environmentally friendly.

(I live in Savannah, we have the 2nd biggest St Patrick's Day parade in the states. I have plenty of Irish, thanks very much. :D)

Yeah!

It turned out he wasn't mad, he was scared that I would be mad at him over certain events so he was being avoidant.

I'm kind of upset, but not mad at him really. He's just being stupid with a woman who has abandoned and abused him multiple times over the last seven years... and I'm upset because I know she'll do it again, and I don't know why he's setting himself up for this. But it's out of my control.

Decca 03-20-2009 08:29 AM

I'm happy because it's Friday and my friend and I will be heading out to Knoxville tomorrow to spend the weekend with a buddy of ours! Yay, breaking free of the rut and having a mini-vacation and a chance to unwind!

TheMercenary 03-20-2009 11:32 AM

I am happy because my schedule was changed so I can be off on Sat and watch the Six Nations finals at the Irish pub in town.

Knoxville TN? Is that close to Oahu?

Tiki 03-20-2009 12:47 PM

I'm happy because I have a hiking date on Sunday with Mister-talks-a-lot.

Clodfobble 03-23-2009 04:06 PM

The kids are sleeping, the laundry is started, and I fixed the broken sink faucet all by myself.

And I may just take a nap, too.

Pie 03-23-2009 04:35 PM

Superwoman!

Decca 03-24-2009 04:20 PM

@Shawnee: Am stationed with Hubby in O'ahu, visiting family and friends in Knoxville while he's training in Arizona, if that makes sense :)

Decca 03-24-2009 04:27 PM

Actually, that reminds me of why I'm happy today. I head back to O'ahu on Tuesday! Back to the islands and my lovely husband and my cute little house and the new puppy that Mr. D rescued from the side of the road and has named Thor for reasons unknown... Oh, yeah, the puppy's another reason I'm happy. And because Lil D has a new word!! At least, I THINK she said "spoon"...

:p I just wondered, because it sounded like a road trip the way you said it, and I thought "is there a Knoxville, Hawaii?"

Pico and ME 03-24-2009 07:11 PM

Just last week I flew over Knoxville.

Pie 03-24-2009 09:14 PM

Back on the 10,000 steps bandwagon!

monster 03-24-2009 09:25 PM

go, Pie! :)

Sundae 03-25-2009 08:34 AM

I'm below 17 stone. Finally.
My meds have been changed after a major meltdown at the beginning of the week and I have sleeping tablets again (only 14, so have to be sparing... or I'd be asleep now). Thank goodness, I couldn't hack another night like last one, falling asleep at about 04.30. And I'm only sure of that because I had a nightmare.

I think Mum & I cleared the air as well.
I can never be sure though. She does have a tendency to bring up past regressions when she wants to score a point :(

Still, they go away on Friday for 2 weeks.
If I can be an almost normal daughter in that time, it will go a long way to setting her mind at rest.

Oh and I've been referred to a psychiatric nurse.
Which might help me move forward a bit.
I seem to fall between too stools as far as the NHS are concerned. Troubled enough to need counselling and to be signed off, but nowhere near mad enough for some serious help that might help me address my issues and become a contributing member of society again.

But I'm feeling mildly positive this morning, and certainly not about to top myself, like I felt before.

I think I'll do the hoovering as a nice surprise for Mum.

Shawnee123 03-25-2009 08:36 AM

Good work, girl. :)

Trilby 03-25-2009 08:53 AM

so glad to hear it, SG.

DanaC 03-25-2009 09:42 AM

Way to go m'dear. Proud of you.

HungLikeJesus 03-25-2009 05:57 PM

It's been a very dry winter, but the weather people are predicting that we'll get one to two feet of snow tomorrow.

I'll pile some wood by the stove and spend the day reading and drinking hot tea.

DanaC 03-25-2009 06:06 PM

Two things making me happy today:

1st - I put in a solid three and a half hour stint working with my primary source materials. Did about 1000 words worth of truncated notes (should build out into a 2-3000 when written up properly). That's the first non-deadline induced university work I've managed to get my head into since before Dad died. I feel I reconnected with my dissertation subject. I actually rather enjoyed it. It was peaceful and productive and unpanicked. More of my work should be like that. If I can just reign my attention span back towards an adult norm and away from what is currently the attention span of a 5 year old (unless I am vanished into a TV programme - Dexter and BSG I can concentrate on...)

2nd: As a reward for my hard work, I arranged a Double Dexter session with J. That was a fun evening!

I am happy because I successfully installed a wireless networked all-in-one printer, replaced the keyboard on one laptop, and fixed the video (loose connector cable) on another one.

(The down side is that this was all at home. Too much like work. Sigh.)

We sold 500 grilled chicken plates Sat. I won't grill or eat chicken for a coon's age. We raised a lot of money for the Kids with special needs, as well as enough to donate a palate of dry ration to the Humane Society here in our town.
Had an Oyster roast earlier this afternoon with milk base stew [and lotsa onions] and steamed on the halfshell with a kinda 'on the side' sauce contest. Winner bought everyone a round.
Horseradish is a def when it comes to seafood sauce. Learned that tonight.
Life is good.

Shawnee123 03-26-2009 03:43 PM

Meeting my best friend and her sis after work for drinks. I haven't seen her in FOREVER. She didn't get the job here, it went to a current employee as a promotion, which is very nice too.

And the sun came out.

It never ceases to amaze me how not communicating causes so many problems. We humans just assume things, but when we TALK about it, we find out it isn't what we thought at all. Silly us. :D

Cicero 03-26-2009 05:10 PM

Funny. I have the opposite experience. When I ask things that are important they are usually as I had thought. Well, that happens a lot.

Been struggling with getting my desktop hooked up to wireless for weeks, and finally today I fixed it. Put in a new wireless network card, and like magic it worked! I'm writing this post from it now. I'm so excited its like a having good friend just wake up out of a coma.

monster 03-29-2009 08:29 PM

might not quite make it to he "making me happy" scale, but I am somewhat pleased that we just got the taxes done.
