Oh, and that's a point, Lamp.

Get the new carpet after you've trained him not to claw it up or poo on it? ;)

Then get some nice carpet the older wiser Carrot can lay around on. :)

Can't risk it, Lamp. The carpets wouldn't survive cleaning, which is the only other way to ensure the area is safe for a pup who is still going through vaccinations. 8 weeks old is slap bang in the danger zone for parvo virus and and a few other things.

Even fully vaccinated adult dogs can carry parvo, and it can live in any fabrics that the dog has had contact with for almost a year. It survives against most disinfectants. There is no known cure for a dog who contracts parvo. You just have to ride it out and hope theys urvive, deal with the worst of the symptoms etc. Very dangerous for pups and old dogs.

Pilau was intermittently vomiting and, especially towards the end, there were many accidents and a few explosions. Without putting him through gruelling tests there was no real way to know for sure what was going on at the end. We think we know. But he could easily have been floored by a viral infection. The house is simply not safe for a puppy of 8 weeks.

Nice thought Infi, but the carpet is baggy and frayed, with exposed grip strips and raised creases. Grip strips would tear a pup's paw open if he digs in the wrong place. Frayed edges are an invitation for pulling and chewing: a habit I really don't want him starting with.

I'm not house proud. If the carpet ends up with a few clean patches where I've had to clean up an accident, or he turns out tobe a digger and fucks it up within a year...well I can live with that. But the start point is a carpet that isn't potentially carrying something awful, and doesn't have easily pulled at and chewed places which could invite a puppy's attention.

Of course. D'uh. That makes sense, Dana.

(You can see I've never had a dog to train)

:)

*smiles*

Sometimes it's a little counter intuitive.

classicman 02-07-2012 10:20 PM

Posted in the Pet thread already, but I'm very happy for you and Carrot.

I look forward to reading about the dog-tired puppy passed out after a long days romp through the hills all curled up in mommy's lap.

ZenGum 02-08-2012 01:48 AM

I also had the thought of WTF? New carpet just before a new puppy? are you NUTS?

But, seing your discussion, okay, you're in fact very wise and compassionate. Carry on.

Pico and ME 02-08-2012 02:46 AM

Dana, carrot looks so soft and sqeezable!

limey 02-08-2012 04:59 AM

Oh God! I want a beardie!!!!!

DanaC 02-08-2012 06:07 AM

Yeah....they have that effect :P

You can see how J ended up with one when all he was originally doing was accompanying me to see Carrot.

Here Limey, check this out:

Griff 02-08-2012 06:22 AM

He is so cute!

DanaC 02-08-2012 06:25 AM

The video that shows them feeding is adorable. Their mum, Ellie, is such a sweetheart. A really good and attentive mum, but puppy teeth are starting to get sharp by now :p

Griff 02-08-2012 06:33 AM

She's about ready to cut them off. :) Will the brown guy gray out over time like the black and white ones?

DanaC 02-08-2012 06:43 AM

They all fade aye. But the browns tend to go either a sandy colour, or a kind of cappucino colour like Pil. Their mum is a brown. So, she'd have looked very similar to carrot when she was a pup. She's quite unusual in that she's kept a strong brown tone to her fur when you see her close up. It's like beneath the top layer of pale fur there's a layer of mahogany.

Pilau was a very deep chocolate brown when we got him :P

limey 02-08-2012 07:21 AM

The mum's a real cracker! My mum was very partial to the dark brown adults, but you could never tell which brown pup would end up like that!

DanaC 02-08-2012 07:39 AM

My own personal preference has always been the cappuccino froth colour that Pilau went. They look ethereal when the light catches them. Though I'll adore whatever Carrot turns out to be I know.

Sundae 02-13-2012 03:16 PM

Brianna.

DanaC 02-13-2012 07:19 PM

Funnily enough it's Dwellars making me happy right now (along with Carrot's imminent arrival:P).

I've had my head up my arse the last week or so, so haven't been on here with news and photos etc. But...

The other day a parcel arrrived and my neighbour signed for it as I was out. When he gave it to me he asked me 'what've you been buying now?'...I have no idea, I said. I can't remember ordering anything...

So, I opened it thinking maybe I had ordered the puppy products I thought I'd decided against, after all. Nope! An early birthday gift from Sheldon!

Then another parcel arrived the day after (I think) which has an American return address on it. I haven't opened it, in case it is birthday related.

Today, amongst my mail, was an envelope from an American sender. I almost didn't open it. Almost left it, as I felt sure it was a birthday card. But then curiosity got the better of me and I thought, well, it's ok to open a card early right?

It wasn't a birthday card. It was a Valentine's card....from Carrot. Whoever organised the card on Carrot's behalf ( I think I know...I think I recognise the style of card ;p) had done a lovely message and inside was a pic of Carrrot.

Sometimes being a dwellar is just about the bestest thing.

I'm still up to my eyeballs in decorating and carpetting etc (carpet fitters coming tomorrow!) but with big smile on my face

(incidentally: Gnomey decided to stick around to see what my room looks like with new carpet. He'll be setting off on the next leg of his journey very very soon!!)

HungLikeJesus 02-13-2012 08:21 PM

I haven't been following the home improvement process. Will the carpet match the drapes?

DanaC 02-14-2012 03:30 AM

Naturally

Big Sarge 02-14-2012 09:32 AM

I received a wonderful Valentine's Card from Sundae!! I love it! XOXO. It really brightened my day

plthijinx 02-15-2012 11:14 PM

Cuase, like, straight men use paper plates, or something, eh? Kitchen stuff is girly.

:D

infinite monkey 02-16-2012 04:33 PM

Homo Depot...isn't that a competitor of Love's? Eh, got nuttin'.

I'm happy because I ordered a pizza from the new place and it will be ready for me to pick up on the way home.

Sundae 02-16-2012 04:35 PM

On the way homo

infinite monkey 02-16-2012 04:48 PM

Oooh, I got it.

Homo Depot, isn't that a competitor of Menhards?

infinite monkey 02-16-2012 04:50 PM

Only no one except us midwesties are going to get that.

Big Sarge 02-16-2012 05:00 PM

I got a very, very special Valentine from Lola Bunny. Can you believe it? I had 2 beautiful women send me Valentines?

limey 02-16-2012 05:43 PM

Yes I can Sarge. Because you are a beautiful guy!

Sundae 02-23-2012 03:24 PM

I got to sing to the birthday gal!
Lousy phoneline - she sounded like she had a script by a handful of monkeys sans typewriters, read by a Dalek on battery failure.

Luckily, enough got through for her to work out it was me and stand in the place where you live - no, sorry - stand in a place with reception, and call back.

The lady is made up with Cellar tributes/ cards/ gifts.
I'm not passing it on officially, just reporting the way she spoke about everything.

And she is so obviously in love with Carrot already.
But that's a given.

Happy lady on a happy day.
We stopped talking because Ma arrived.
Again - Dana has pretty much everything she wants today. And that's blessed any day of the year. let alone a birthday.

Clodfobble 02-29-2012 10:36 PM

Minifob has his first loose tooth! I got surprisingly sentimental about it.

HungLikeJesus 02-29-2012 10:48 PM

Maybe his sister punched him.

Was he okay with it, Clod?
Tiger hasn't lost a tooth yet and I worry about how he will react to blood in his mouth.

Clodfobble 03-01-2012 02:53 PM

It hasn't fully come out yet, just very wiggly. We'll see...

plthijinx 03-02-2012 01:20 PM

i just saw on my poker league's website that for this years quarter i've busted the top 100 players in points for the greater Houston area! ranked 97th! (and yes, there are more than 101 players in the league! :p:)

classicman 03-02-2012 02:49 PM

nice..

Griff 03-06-2012 06:50 AM

Earie presented us with triplets this morning. The first two were breech but Pete being a kick-ass woman got them out. All creatures look good despite the cold. Now we'll go to work and see what happens. Funny looking litter two LaMancha (tiny) eared and one Nubian (pendulous) eared.

monster 03-06-2012 08:15 AM

Hurrah! Pics!

glatt 03-06-2012 08:18 AM

This is awesome. Deliver some livestock and go off to work. So cool.

infinite monkey 03-06-2012 12:39 PM
