Hi Jackie, and welcome!

I'm an old lady and hopelessly non-technical. What is a 1TB SSD?

I'm also giddy about receiving an order I made recently. :)

My telephone system (landline/ answering machine) has been crapping out for some time now. The whole shebang is at least 18 years old, there is a ton of "snow" on the line, the wireless phone battery now lasts only about an hour before it needs a charge, and for the last eight months or so, I've been getting endless (fake) charity calls - least five or six a day.

My new phone system has the ability to block calls/numbers. I can't wait to set it up!

Also a one terabyte solid state drive. A hard drive with no moving parts.

This morning I received the caller ID ID'd a number as being from one of my (dead for 5-6 yrs) best friends' father. What's even worse, the father has been dead for at least 35-40 years.

I think the number was spoofed.:lol2:

A few weeks ago, I got a call from a number I didn't recognize. I picked up the phone and said "Hello?" A young man said, "Oh gramma, I'm so glad you're home. I'm in trouble and I really need your help."

"Oh, that's too bad," I said, "but I guess you're going to have to take care of your OWN shit, because I don't have any grandchildren."

DAMN, Edna. I've got another Project Manager asking for my time. In particular, she says: "It’s time sensitive and we need someone on this that can work quickly and meet deadlines."

Unfortunately, I'm awaiting the final files for another project (front/back matter, resources, etc.), so I can't really commit. So I suggested the two Project Managers work out a way that I can complete both of their projects.

BTW, this new project pays .75% mor than the one I'm already working on. The bidding war progresses . . . :D

Thanks, Bruce! I had to turn the new project down, since I'm due to receive the final files for my current book next week.

Ah well. At least word is getting around that I'm good at what I do and can be depended on to meet even the craziest deadlines. My client is a BIG global company and their editing/publishing arm puts out roughly 2000 books a year, so I think I'll have lots of work going forward. Yay!

Three-quarters of a percent? 75 cents? 75%?

I confuse so easily.

Yeah, I'm paid by the page. Typical rate is $2 per page. The new job offer came in at $2.75/page. Super rush jobs bring $3/page.

I'm never going to get rich doing this, but it pays the bills and it's work I like. Plus, I can work in my jammies and do bong rips whenever the hell I want; I'm my own manager.

I haven't taken a real vacation in about 10 years. I'm long overdue.

To treat myself, at the end of January I will be spending 10 days at this place . . . .

Inorite?!

He and his wife got it in a "fire sale." Seems the millionaire that owned it, bought it as a tryst palace. Wifey found out and said "Sell it NOW or it's time for a divorce and I'll take half of everything." So he put it on the market at some ridiculous price and my nephew and his wife snapped it up.

Hella deal! Now they rent it out for weddings and business retreats, etc. for a few hun a night, while they stay in a $50/night hotel for the duration. They're not getting rich, but it helps pay the bills.

Thankfully, we'll lose only another five minutes of daylight until the winter solstice, thee, here comes the sun, baby!

Did they hear the other group had offered more money?

henry quirk 12-15-2018 10:21 AM

affordable care act

"A federal judge in Texas said on Friday that the Affordable Care Act's individual coverage mandate is unconstitutional and that the rest of the law therefore cannot stand." -- from one of many stories flittin' around the ether.

Can it be? Is that awful law on it's way out? Mebbe, mebbe not. Today, however, the thought it might be headin' to the graveyard is enough to put a bounce in my step.

Diaphone Jim 12-15-2018 12:05 PM

And take that bounce out of the step of 10,000,000 others.

Gravdigr 12-15-2018 12:38 PM

My step, happily, is unaffected.

henry quirk 12-15-2018 12:48 PM

"take that bounce out of the step of 10,000,000 others."

My problem: how?

EDIT: "take that bounce out of the step of 10,000,000 others."

Good.

Gravdigr 12-15-2018 01:15 PM

That was for a different book project/project manager from the same company, which I had to turn down in order to finish the last bits of my current project.

I don't fully understand the company's heirarchy and range of services. I do know it's very broad. They're primarily a business management and software provider, but they have an editing/publishing arm that produces 1500-2000 books per year.

Within that publishing arm are multiple project managers competing for available vendors like me to work on various book projects. The PMs have some sort of list they consult for approved editors/proofreaders, and one or another may not have dug deep enough to find out if I'm currently working on a different project. So I occasionally get queries from different PMs asking if I'm available to work on their project when I haven't yet finished my current project.

Y'know. The right hand often doesn't know what the left hand is doing. And so it goes . . .

;)

xoxoxoBruce 12-15-2018 11:01 PM

That's what I mean, I wonder if the left hand found out the right hand offered more money and figured they better up the ante to keep in the running on future projects.

Oh my, but you're a cunning creature. :D

But truthfully, my current PM raised the rate because the author wanted me to do a little additional work. Beyond checking the final proof bibliography against the author's original manuscript, the author asked if I could also do a bibliographic crosscheck against the citations mentioned in the final proof chapter files (to make sure the chapter citations match the bibliographic citations).

Guess what? They don't. A LOT.

So. I'm assuming the author has had a chance to review the chapter files I submitted and likes my work. And I'm assuming that the author is deeply interested in getting this edition of the book perfect. Because (I'm assuming) the original author of this book (and many others on matters concerning the throat and speaking) died earlier this year, and this 10th edition is meant to be a sort of tribute + all-inclusive, major reference work that updates all the shit that came before it. And so that's why, I'm assuming, they gave me a better rate for the whole book (320 pages), even though the extra work I'm doing concerns only the front/end matter (52 pages).

I don't know if any of this is true, but you got me thinking and I've had several cocktails, so there's that. :p:

Bottom line? Evidently, I'm a fucking genius when it comes to this picayune shit, but by god there's a spot on the planet for me!
