I'm less concerned with bacteria than I am with water soaking into the wood, then being heated. Probably going to speed up the deterioration of the wood significantly.

And yes, the bamboo warning is likely for the glue, and would also pertain to any glued-up wooden objects as well, like most cutting boards.

Seems like it would, but I swear to you it doesn't. The oil from cooking soaks in better than the dishwasher could ever hope to get it out.

True story: I currently have three wooden spoons in my kitchen--the super-cheap kind that comes with splinters--which were given to me as a gift from someone in Mr. Clod's extended family the Christmas after we got engaged. (We had to drive up to Illinois so everyone could say they met me, but because no one knew anything about me--or communicated with each other, apparently--I literally got three gifts each containing a kitchen towel and a set of wooden spoons. Two went to Goodwill, and I kept the third.) The point is, our 15th anniversary is next week, and I'm still using the same three spoons. The handles are pine-colored (save for a couple of burn marks,) but the ends are dark brown and smooth like finished furniture. The only care I've ever shown them is after they come out of the dishwasher, I let them air dry before tossing them back in the drawer because I'm paranoid about mold.

My mother, grandmother and aunts all had maple cutting boards that went through the dishwasher and before that had been scrubbed by hand with an SOS or Brillo pad. They were bleached white like driftwood but never warped or came apart.

Your grandmother had a dishwasher?

xoxoxoBruce 07-03-2018 04:39 PM

After decades of cooking on and heating with a wood stove she got a brand new house in 1953 with all the bells and whistles including central heat, garage, gas stove, and a doorbell.

I got a bad count on m'generations, I guess.

I thought you were older than that, and thus your grandmother couldn't have----I guess I thought you were older than dirt.

That doesn't look right.

What was that, a piece of gravel stuck in somebody's tire finally flying loose at highway speed?

Clodfobble 09-04-2018 06:34 PM

Wow. It sucks, but it's also kind of pretty.

xoxoxoBruce 09-04-2018 07:28 PM

Your neighbor? Or did you see it happen?
Glue a big hairy spider in the middle an nobody will notice.

It's certainly an odd shape, but it was just a rock that came from a gravel truck. There are two gravel quarries within five or six miles of my house, so I share the road with these big trucks all the time. But this is the first time that one of my vehicles sustained damage from them.

The good news is, I called the gravel company and they're going to replace my windshield at their cost. I'm particularly glad about that, because I have a $250 deductible on my auto insurance and the replacement glass would only cost $225, so insurance wouldn't cover the new windshield.

Yay me!

Even better, the new glass is coming right to ME - I don't have to go anywhere to get it fixed. More yay!
