I have a visitor.
I live in a concrete wasteland. From my 9th floor window I can see about 300 buildings and exactly ten trees, mostly just the tips peeping over other buildings.
Yet for the last week or so I have been hearing an occasional "chee chee chee chee cheee" which I think is a Gecko (I've heard them before in Australia). It's probably one of these:

Attachment 15874

It seems to be living under the fridge. They are regarded as protectors of homes. How cool, I hope it is doing okay. They eat insects and I'm not sure there are enough about to sustain it. I hope I catch a glimpse of it soon.
Ok - help me name my gecko. No, I will not call it Gordon.

Sundae 11-22-2007 09:44 AM

Bugaboo make a version of pushchair (stroller) called the Gecko. That would be a cool name imo.

One of the pluses of living with my dad who is forever a bachelor (by his own choosing) is that the women of my mom's family (who he's still very close with) often take pity on him...we've been last minute invited to a real thanksgiving meal! Woo!

Tink 11-22-2007 05:43 PM

Making Black Friday plans with the girls. A time honored sister tradition. We are minus one this year though but we will be ringing her on the phone, per her request. (Let's see how she will like a 5am call) I think she'll already be working though.)

We've got heaps of these little cuties living on the outside of our house. Unfortunately if they venture inside they usually get eaten by the cats. Actually, here's a funny story. One of the kids had a rubber gecko and my tom cat was playing with it. Batting it around and tormenting it as cats do. I wasn't paying much attention until I noticed a while later that he'd chewed the tail off. Mustn't have tasted too good.

I think you should name your gecko 'little mate'. That's probably what I'd do if I were living far from home and had a new housemate.

It's raining - which I love when I'm in bed (00.19 here)

But what's really made me happy is I've just watched Ali's video again. Lovely house, warm climate, warm hostess - summer in my winter bedroom, what's not to love.

Cloud 11-24-2007 02:05 PM

wow. It's snowing like a MOF out there. On Wednesday it was sunny and 75 degrees. No one is going anywhere in my town today. And I'm snug as a bug in my house.

I just saw this. You're a sweetheart SG.

ZenGum 11-25-2007 10:30 AM

As I mentioned here I believed a building near my home was about to become a destruction/construction site.
I wandered past today and saw a sign which - IF I interpreted it correctly - indicated the project will be finished in two months. There is no way they could demolish and rebuild in that time - in Japan foundations have to go waaay deep and there must be loads of steel and concrete all the way up. This all takes time.
So I am now guessing it is only a renovation job.
This is supported by the way the scaffolding at the top connects to the building, which I can't imagine them doing if they were planning to demolish.
:D

Aliantha 11-25-2007 04:42 PM

Well that's great news huh? It might improve the view too!

Chocolatl 11-28-2007 11:59 AM

My new glasses came in yesterday. My brain has finally adjusted to the new prescription, and - I CAN SEE!
(I've had the same old prescription for two years, and frames that were four years old and pretty bent out of shape.)

jester 11-28-2007 12:32 PM

Getting gifts from our supplier's during the holidays. Chocolates and other food stuffs. Mmmm, yummy.

Sundae 11-28-2007 03:53 PM

Met my new alcohol counsellor today, she is from upstate New York. Which I didn't expect in Welling, Kent.

I'm now on the waiting list for generic counselling and a 6 week Stage 1 course which is group work for people wanting to control their drinking or become completely abstinent. It's in 90 minute sessions, every Monday, Wednesday, Friday for 6 weeks.

It will play havoc with my gym class schedule but I can restart my classes any time. I can only take this help with alcohol while I am not working.

The only downside is the length of the waiting lists. 2-3 months for counselling. And it's going to be a race to see if the Step 1 course occurs fully within the period I am signed off for... Ah well - the time will pass one way or another, I just have to take the steps I can when I can and trust everything else will fall into place.

Also realised today just how far I have come since moving here. I was able to describe before and after and see what I have achieved. And I didn't cry once. Honestly, the amount of people I've had to tell the sordid details of my life to this year... I'm well practised now.

limey 11-28-2007 04:30 PM

If you find you're "running out of time" for the counselling on your current period of being signed off sick, can you get your doctor to extend it? I know this goes against what you'd like to do, but maybe this would be a good course of action to consider for the longer term benefits?
Meawhile - yay you! It's great to hear that you can see the progress you've made - that's bound to be the best motivator (Mr Motivator, to you (remember him? )).

Sundae 11-28-2007 04:36 PM

I talked it through with HM and we both agreed I should treat this as my priority. So if it comes down to it I tell the Job Centre and my GP the truth. Fingers crossed there won't be a clash and I'll have the course under my belt and have a job by end of Feb.

BigV 11-28-2007 04:54 PM

SG--

Good luck to you. I have no words of advice on your other endeavors, but wrt alcohol, I can say that it's been well worth it to me to forgo drinking. I made this choice a long time ago, and I do not regret it. I only speak about it to give you a first hand account that it is both possible and good.

You can do it!

kerosene 11-28-2007 05:22 PM

I agree on the alcohol...sobriety is highly underrated. Good luck, SG!

Sundae 11-28-2007 05:27 PM

I'm down to 2 or 3 sessions of drinking a week and on those nights my consumption is lower than it was. Just looking to keep bringing it down until I'm within health guidelines (so by about half). This will be the equivalent of a bottle and a half of red wine a week.

Clodfobble 11-28-2007 06:32 PM

The other great thing is that as you are able to start drinking less, you will be consuming a lot fewer calories and your already impressive weight loss routine will be even more successful!

classicman 11-28-2007 07:32 PM

Just my :2cents:
I wanted to quit smoking for the longest time. I've smoked for well over 20 years. I tried cutting back till I thought it was manageable, 1/2 pack a day from 1 or 2 packs, then I would decrease slowly till zero. Well although that plan seemed logical, it never worked. Finally I just decided one day I had to stop and I did. I took no drugs, no patches, no gum...nothing.

The one thing that changed was my attitude. I always cringed at the thought of NEVER smoking again. This time I just said I'll take a break till I'm 70, then I'll smoke all I want. I know it sounds stupid, but its made it so much easier. I am several months not smoking and I can't imagine smoking any time soon.

Go for it SG and don't let anything or anyone get in your way! It feels so good.

Aliantha 11-28-2007 07:38 PM

I reckon quitting smoking has to be cold turkey. I did it without patches etc too, and I've not even had one drag while out socializing and I'm glad. My kids are so much happier about it. They still say how wonderful it is that I don't smoke anymore and it's been about 4 yrs for me now.

Congrats classic. You're a star (just like me). ;)

Michaela 11-28-2007 08:22 PM

Way to go! Smoking is out but I can't turn away the going out with the gang for a drink after work. More power to those that don't have either vice. Woo Hoo

Sundae 11-29-2007 06:42 AM

I quit smoking cold turkey. I was just a habitual smoker though, and less than 20 a day. I never believed I was addicted and proved it when I stopped.

I'm happy today because I just cancelled yoga :)
I know it sounds bad, but I checked all my gym clothes an hour and ten minutes before the class started - all used and sweaty! Damn, how did that happen? So I figured it wasn't enough time to get them washed and dried (not in our machine anyway). So I cancelled on the personal proviso that I go to the gym about 15.00 - when they will be dried.

And it really cheered me up :)

Oh and Dylan purred for me for the first time since we moved down here in July. If my sausages thaw in in time for tea it'll be a good day all round!

LabRat 11-29-2007 07:12 AM

I got my SS recipient...yesss!

Thanks monster, for rounding this up!

Sundae 11-29-2007 07:29 AM

I'm pleased with my recipient too, thanks Monster for the work so far.
I'm just happy all round today - I was singing in the bath just now.
It reminds me that I have been down recently and days like this will become more frequent.

YAY!

Cloud 11-30-2007 10:45 AM

totally embarrassed to have read, and enjoyed, (this being the "happy" thread) a whole series of Transformers slash fanfiction.

Yep. Sam and Bumblebee are Doing It.

Actually, I should post this in the opposing thread as well...

Aliantha 12-02-2007 10:45 PM

Great stuff fresh! Good luck with your exams too mate.

freshnesschronic 12-02-2007 10:53 PM

Dangit Ali, you're too nice! Thanks though!

Aliantha 12-02-2007 10:55 PM

Well some people happen to disagree with that fresh, but that's ok. They're just cockheads. ;)

Shawnee123 12-03-2007 08:59 AM

Why, you gonna be there? lol

Have I mentioned I don't date, don't pursue, don't look? Too wary. I'm in dreamland "it'll happen if it's meant to be."

Bullshit! I call bullshit!
I can see you cutting your eyes at some young fop riiight nooow! You can't go out of town and talk to us!?!
You should be banned until you have thoroughly hung out at the hotel bar, gotten toasted, and layed..use condoms. Don't use your real name.
:D
(I don't care if he is in town to be on the tail-end of a pyramid scheme or not)

shina 12-03-2007 11:53 AM

I'm indoors and dry.

There is a slight chance. For instance, if his first name is Sugar, and his last name is Daddy...I might consider it. ;)

Sundae 12-03-2007 12:12 PM

I have just had shiitake mushrooms baked in garlic infused olive oil, topped with breadcrumbs and low fat cheese. It was so good that I ate all the crumby bits from around the dish and now I have killer garlic breath. Lovely :yum:

You go Shawnee, flash a bit of ankle and get yourself a kind and clever older man. Better lovers in my opinion too.

It's true...there is much anticipation of NSFW pictures of nakedness. If you don't believe me, come hang out in chat right now. ;)

LR, thanks. As I mentioned somewhere else, I didn't get too many pictures that I think would be of interest to the Cellar. Maybe I just need a few days distance and I'll re-review them.

===============

I gained 10.4 pounds in the two weeks I was on vacation. I figured that I should be able to loose the same amount over the next two weeks - easy come, easy go, right?

But I'm already down by about six pounds, so it might take even less than that.

And I'm sure the other four pounds is pure muscle.

Nah, here back in my room after today's session...just cracked open a beer and turned on the tv. CABLE, mon dieu (sp?)

Today was national training, the real conference doesn't start until tomorrow...decided to hang out, drink, watch tv, relax, check out the cellar. Only thing is no smoking rooms. :(

can IT track if I look at porn on this laptop? :D

PS very hard to type on this thing, and not yet used to the touchpad mouse. After a few beers I won't care.

Cicero 12-04-2007 04:29 PM

Mmmm...this is going to be fun.....

Where's my camera, Shawnee is going to get drunk and naked on the cellar for once..

Hey wasn't I going to ban you until you got drunk at the hotel bar...and layed?!?

I guess this isn't the kind of thing UT helps with...

You aren't going to find your sugardaddy propped up alone and drinking in front of your hotel room tv. I know...I've tried it, and he never jumps off the screen no matter how much I squeeze my eyes, focus, and concentrate.
:)

HungLikeJesus 12-04-2007 04:32 PM

Shawnee,
Is there a pool or hot tub? Did you bring your bathing suit? You should be hanging out, but since you're not, at least you're here.

Shawnee123 12-04-2007 04:32 PM

lol...most people aren't here yet, and the ones who are...not promising. A lot of people are checking in tonight...may check out the bar later (after 6 years I know most of the bar frequenters!)

Drunk, yes. Naked...I don't want to cause a Cellar Barf Epidemic.

Shawnee123 12-04-2007 04:33 PM

Outdoor pool. No hot tub. It's a Crowne Plaza in a corporate area so it's mostly for conferences and such, methinks.
