So pleased about your Dad, Carr.
Mum is giving me regular weather reports; it's so odd to sit in the park in the sunshine and get a text about monsoon conditions in Aylesbury. For my first six weeks here it was the other way round! I too had a barcode bangle in hospital. I proudly wore it home. Well, mostly to give other people an unspoken clue as to why I had to concentrate to stay upright, and also so I could easily be returned to sender if I did indeed fall down. Happy today because as long as the house sale goes through (OMG, seriously? still waiting!) the 'rents are coming up both in September and for Christmas. Depending on Dad's health of course. But Mum says why not have a last hurrah while they still can. She's abandoned the idea of us going abroad; just too much for Dad sadly. And these days they have a gorgeous garden to enjoy with no work to do to it. Ditto house-maintenance. And they live in the centre of town, so even with Dad's poor mobility they can walk to eat/ drink/ relax. It's almost like being on their hols (except for housework). I got them to join the Victoria Club, which is easy walking distance. There is a waiting list and you have to be proposed by an existing member and pay an annual fee - but it means the drinks (both soft and alcoholic) are dirt cheap. It also has two outside terraces, one where people go to smoke and another further back where they don't. So I called the Vic Club to ask how to get on the waiting list, how long it was and what the annual fee was. It turns out they're both old enough for NONE of that to count. They have free membership for life and go about once a fortnight. Yay. Something good I did without even having to pay. ANYWAY. Back to them coming up. Mum says now she "knows" Otley I don't even have to take time off, although it would be lovely to leave Dad in the B&B for the day and go to Leeds market and Yo! Sushi. Dad will be quite happy in a a garden, but we'd put the B&B number in his mobile in case he went out and got lost. And Mum says Laura is so busy these days with her extended family that she won't have time for them over Christmas (no criticism implied). So she says as soon as the house sells I'm to book for them, to make sure they get a vacancy. Something to really look forward to. They'll get a taxi across London (arrival station is not the same as departure stations) to cut down on the stress. Like Mum says, this may be the last time Dad gets to travel. Taxis and First Class trains are luxuries, but hardly like buying a luxury yacht, and you're a long time dead. |
What's making you happy today?
These sound like great plans Sundae. I meant to suggest a taxi across town in London. It makes things so much easier :)
And well done on the clubs membership! It's the little things that matter x Sent by thought transference |
Sundae: Happy for you! :)

Just finished extracting and straining about 50 lbs of honey :D
Have to let it settle for a couple of days before bottling. Sore arms from cranking the extractor. |
That's really cool! Is that about 50 pints? Is honey around the same weight as water?
|
A pint of water weighs a pound. ("A pint's a pound, the world around") - the same jar of honey weights about 1.5 pounds. Got to start washing jars and lids and making more labels.
|
How many hives?

Nowhere,an, in the UK a pint if water weights a pound and a quarter!

I have 3 hives, the honey is from 18 frames of one hive. A really good hive under prefect conditions can make 100 lbs of honey. I'm hoping to increase to about 10 hives.
Sorry Limey, I forgot about the exchange rate ... :D |
Wow, 18 frames, your bees must have a good food supply. Are they near orchards or farm crops, can't be all wildflowers... can it?
|
I have an interview tomorrow with the "enemy"...being from KC, Elspode will know which college I speak of (as I am a Mizzou guy).
It's a part-time gig, but it's in a cool college town at a good university...could be a good stepping stone. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I got a present from limey! I love it. :)

That damn wife of mine can't stand to let me have all the fun...
She got a promotion at her job today...it has been in the pipeline for a while. A management position, more responsibility, more travel, more money and an office. I'm so proud of her...she works so hard. And I'm glad we finally have luck like the wind at our back. It's been a tough year. :yelsick: |
Sweet!
I've been seeing little signs all around that the economy is slowing improving. Last month, I got my first cost of living increase in a few years. It was small, but fuck yeah! A raise is a raise. On the other hand, I saw an article in the paper a week or so ago that the average US checking account balance has gone from something like $700 pre-recession to something like $3,000 today. People are still afraid to spend money. But having increased savings on hand has got to be a good thing for the country, right? |
I would love nothing more than to see most of the banking industry take a dive. And if I had the money, I would buy a Dave Ramsey book for every American.

So I'm going to run the booth of my brother's business at the county fair, intermittently, starting tomorrow. How fun will that be? Tons o' fun!
|
What kind of booth?
|
For his business. He and his wife have a great business model and this booth is something never before seen until a couple years ago. It benefits the camping folks' campers. Don't want to get into too much detail, but I'll be helping scheduling and collecting money.
He and his brilliant wife (who makes a ton in her own career) started this business I don't know exactly how many years ago and they are kickin' ass and takin' names. So successful! I'm happy to get to help out. And I love my county fair. Always have, always will. |
County fair! Coming up here in smalltown in the next couple of weeks. I'm arranging for some Occ Med space and will be there every minute I can, selling the practice. I'll get to listen in on the headliners they get for concerts, and spend a couple of days glad-handing. Smalltown is small. I need to be recognizable.
|
Just got home to find that the Cowboys are playing on the NFL channel.
Pre season, and no Romo, but hey. Bonus |
Heading out to help clean up our beekeeper's association display room for the upcoming Brooklyn (CT) fair. It's the oldest fair in the country - I'll be there spreading the "buzz" about beekeeping.
Also, got a call about a swarm in a tree locally. Went over and grabbed about 6 lbs of bees and hived them up. Hopefully they will stick around. |

Just got back from the Arlington County fair, and they had a cool beekeeper display with a live hive in plexiglass. Pretty cool. Lots of honey varieties to buy too.
|
I have a few days to myself. That's always appreciated.
|
You'll just violate your privacy and personal space while arguing with yourself over what you want to do next, while you want to relax. :haha:

I did my first day's training (well, morning really: 9-1) for a work from home telesales job. I'm still a little wary my internet connection is going to go shaky again and put the kibosh on it - but so far it it' doing ok :p
It's using bespoke software that dials your number (when you prompt ) you pick up and you're connected to the system - all the calls are then done through their internet telephone setup and nothing goes on your bill. It's raising money for a charity. So far they seem very ethical and not at all like the hard-pushing, salesey, pestery companies that just try and get the figures in at all costs. (we were for instance told that if we have any doubts about a call where they are going for it, but you maybe get the impression that they don;t understand what they're committing to, or may have issues such as senility or what have you, either take the commitment and then email straight to the team leader so they can listen to the call and assess it and if necessary halt the order whilst it's still in progress - or better still don't take the commitment - if in doubt don't take it - they also don't call at weekends or back holidays, or at all during the Christmas season.). It's an air ambulance service we're raising money for - and they are all warm or semi-warm contacts. I'm committed to 10 hours a week - which should just about replace the part time teaching wage I no longer have coming in! But once my thesis is submitted assuming I've done ok with calls and am still with them (;p) I can increase that to about 25 hours if I want. Not the best paid telesales job, but nowhere near the worst and they seem like a decent set up. I'll take the lower rate and not have to deal with insane pressure and unethical practices over high pay and high pressure. |

Not trying to do you out of a job, honest! Best of luck to you. |
The Digr Clan is in an annual membership to the 'local' air ambulance service (strictly a commercial endeavor). If any of us require an air med-evac, we don't get billed for the chopper or the crew. The membership is $150 a year.
Their minimum transportation fee is $7500. |
