Well, you look like you might get a point on the board...if I can find another job :p

The brokerage idea will come into play at the end of the month, but I have another couple of irons in the fire at this stage. One I am following up on Monday, my mind is in overdrive expanding that idea and working out the details.

Trilby 01-15-2009 07:36 PM

Best of luck, Ducks. You seem to be the type who lands quite nicely on her feet and I know you will this time. You and Sundae are of the good, strong mettle with loads of sense and determination. I admire you both.

Aliantha 01-15-2009 07:39 PM

What's making me happy today is that I haven't heard from the hospital since I did my second glucose tolerance test. This is a good indication that I've passed this time around and all is peachy keen. :)

This makes me very happy.

classicman 01-15-2009 08:47 PM

good for you.

Juniper 01-15-2009 08:51 PM

Great news! I had that crap twice, and it wasn't fun at all. What's the point of getting knocked up if you can't have a donut now and then? :D

We made it down to -25C last night  (yes, school was cancelled)
I think that's the lowest this family has ever seen. Right now it's the warmest part of the day.... 2pm... (sorry about the slash, the without version was worse....)

.

glatt 01-16-2009 01:59 PM

temperature is the one part of the metric system that I have real trouble grasping on an intuitive level.

So according to the Google calculator, your picture shows an inside temperature of 65 degrees F and an outside temp of 3.74 degrees F, and you say it got down to -13 degrees F during the night.

Yup. That's cold.

TheMercenary 01-16-2009 02:01 PM

We are about to have our coldest temps of the season, down to 18 tonight. Highs in the 50's in the day. I am already anticipating spring, about 6 weeks to go.

SteveDallas 01-16-2009 02:25 PM

Battlestar Galactica tonight.

Pie 01-16-2009 02:28 PM

2/3 of our move is done. Now we just need to get the rest of our furniture from our Jersey place, and we'll be all done. For now. :D

DanaC 01-16-2009 04:05 PM

I survived my 18th C military History exam. How I've done, I have no clue. They were great essays...but I don't think I've outright failed...

Thereabouts.

0 is freezing, 21 is room temperature, 40 is too damn hot and 100 is boiling.

or in Michigan terms.......

-15 go to Florida
0 wind down car windows
15 put shorts on
25 get in the pool
35 go to Canada

Trilby 01-16-2009 04:13 PM

DanaC 01-16-2009 04:52 PM

I've just spotted a typo lol. Meant to read they weren't great essays....

Best thing is I chose this years module options so that it was weighted to the first semester...my other modules don't have exams Yey!
So, assuming I don't have to resit this last one, that's my final exam for this degree. Hurrah.

xoxoxoBruce 01-17-2009 04:39 AM

No exams? They trust the Prof to sort out who knows and who's bullshitting? Or everyone passes from here on?

DanaC 01-17-2009 04:49 AM

hahaha. Assessment is all through essays, research project and disssertation. Oh and some 'oral' ... oh yeah.

xoxoxoBruce 01-17-2009 04:54 AM

Oral? Brianna would get an A. ;)

DanaC 01-17-2009 05:06 AM

she'd get a distinction :P

Sundae 01-17-2009 05:09 AM

Happy about UT's car :)

And because it's cool and very windy today and we're seeing some blue sky for the first time in weeks.
I'll moan about it and sneeze and squint when I go out for my walk later, but it does lift the spirits.

DanaC 01-17-2009 07:12 AM

Oh I know isn't it lovely and bright today? I will take pud for a walk shortly. Let him get a dose of sunlight :P

I'm feeling pretty good about life right now. Today, I mean. Well, the last week or so in fact. That's not to say there isn't shit bubbling away and bothering me (like the way my enthusiasm for my day job has dropped to such an extent I am barely managing the bare minimum. This engenders guilt: my constituents deserve a hell of a lot better than that. But... there we go. I'll tackle that when i don't have my back to the wall on assignments. Til then I'll try and force myself to pick up the pace a little at least). But I am feeling pretty groovy overall. If I can just make myself hit the pedal now. It's just for a few months. I need to find that momentum that will let me do thorough work and not some last minute skating attempt.

I'm feeling quietly confident that i will pull this out of the bag (when I am not crucifying myself with doubt and allowing myself to be overwhelmed into inactivity). I just need to spend a series of days taking each step in its turn, pushing my way through some work. I think I can do that. Then, if I manage that, I can manage another series of days. And so on.

yeah. Feeling big enough for what I need. For now. *smiles*

TheMercenary 01-17-2009 07:29 AM

Monster! Cool beans! Where are the bubble pics?

fargon 01-17-2009 08:37 PM

Home from the hospital! Surgery went well. Looking forward to recovering in the comfort of my own home without nurses poking and prodding at me.

Aliantha 01-18-2009 06:14 PM

Good for you Choco. :) Glad to hear all is well. You'll be up and about before you know it. :)

Ugh, the hospital is the WORST! Glad you're home, nothing like your own bed!

Now, take those nice vicodins and percocets, ya hear? :D

Juniper 01-18-2009 06:31 PM

My son had a wrestling meet today. He won all three matches, one with a pin! He had to wrestle a *girl* (holy shit, his dad freaked out about that!) and she was 5 pounds heavier than he is, which makes a big difference in wrestling, 'cause he's a little squirt (10 years old, 64 lbs.)...but he still won. 1st place! Woohoo!

Aliantha 01-18-2009 06:33 PM

Wrestling isn't really a sport anyone gets into over here. At least, not that I've ever heard of. I can't imagine my boys doing it.

Good for your son though Juni. He must be pleased with himself? :)

Pie 01-18-2009 06:53 PM

Glad you're back, Choco. Now rest and recuperate. I remember that a heating pad helped some of the discomfort, back when I had mine out.

Juniper 01-19-2009 12:29 AM

I am DONE with my research paper!

Well, at least I'm done with the draft which is due on Wed. And that is all I need, 1200+ words with citations. Should be interesting; this prof likes to give TONS of feedback. I worked my ass off on this! And yet, the lard ass remains. (sigh) :)

DanaC 01-19-2009 05:37 AM

Yey well done Juni!

sweetwater 01-19-2009 02:20 PM

We have 2 older Cavalier King Charles spaniels that are semi-professional sleepoholics. My sister gave me this toy sleeping Cav and it sleeps on the floor in the tv room. A contractor was in today and he asked about the other 2 dogs, then asked how about the puppy. I thought he was asking about the cat, but nope - he thought the toy was real. I'm not laughing at him, I'm laughing because I am constantly checking to see if the toy is still 'breathing', and I feel like somebody else got suckered into my fantasy world. We're both busted!

Pie 01-19-2009 04:27 PM

We saw a red fox run through our back yard. We have also seen numerous bird species and a small herd of white-tails.

For such a suburban area, there's a lot of great wildlife. But we need to get our back yard fenced in this spring, or the damn deer will eat all the lovely screening we've got from our neighbors!

Just buy a compound bow and you can have deer meat.

Pie 01-19-2009 04:39 PM

:yum:
Unfortunately, they're still trying to figure out if they're going to allow hunting to thin out the herds. It's out of control.

TheMercenary 01-19-2009 04:42 PM

It is crazy, there are so many stories about these places in the North East even as far South as Jersey that are being over run with white tail deer. They need to let some experienced hunters come in and cull them out and donate the food to shelters and the hungry like they do down here.

classicman 01-19-2009 06:41 PM

Delaware and northern Maryland have issues with them too. They have held special hunts in the State Parks for years to try and cull the herds. Car accidents involving deer actually declined for the first time in 2001. I thought that was an interesting, yet useless factoid.

Pie 01-19-2009 06:58 PM

I hit one of those giant brown rats in 2002, up in Jersey. Damn thing did about $1k damage to my car.

ETA: oh, okay. This is the happy thread. I'll take my moans elsewhere.

Juniper 01-19-2009 09:49 PM

Happened to my DH twice. Two cars, totaled.

On the bright side (happy thread) he was OK!

classicman 01-19-2009 10:01 PM

I swear every time I see DH - I think D*ck Head. lol
Glad he was ok .... both times

S'Okay...sometimes it fits. :D

Sundae 01-20-2009 08:46 AM

Tomorrow I go to see a screening of, and an audience with The League of Gentlemen - my comedy heroes.

Bought back when I had wages (!) I also put aside £20 for travel and nonsense. So tomorrow I head off all excited and wearing my best togs and don't even have to feel guilty. Well, a little. But hey - I'm chief cook and bottle washer here now, and my parents are fully in support of the idea that everyone deserves to enjoy themselves as long as they pull their weight the rest of the time.

Ooh! I can't wait to see them!

Shawnee123 01-20-2009 08:49 AM

Enjoy the heck out of it, SG! ;)

wood*nymph 01-23-2009 08:59 PM

yay! I'm so proud of my puppy :) I had to work a 10 hour shift, just got home and my friend informed me that the whole time I was gone he obeyed my command to stay in my bedroom, even with the door wide open and the kids running around

Maybe he DOES have a brain cell!

lumberjim 01-23-2009 09:24 PM

when did he go potty and eat and stuff? what the?

monster 01-23-2009 09:31 PM

ssshhhh, he hid it in her lingerie

wood*nymph 01-23-2009 09:47 PM

before I left and as soon as I got home :) he was a good boy, I think he gets to sleep on the bed with me tonight

DanaC 01-24-2009 06:29 AM

That's a good dog. But 10 hours is a long time for a pup. Given your friend was there and kids running about and so forth...why wasn't someone letting him out periodically? Or were they, and I have completely misunderstood your post? :P

Anyway. Well done nypmh's puppy!

Making me happy today is:

1. I managed, despite nearly killing myself to do it, to get my assignment in on time yesterday.

This last week has been bizarre. After the previous week's mad revision flurry and the exam on the Friday, I couldn't quite get myself in the right frame of mind for research and essay writing. Yes, that's right, I did it again. With exactly seven days on the clock from the time I walked into last Friday's exam to the last moment I could possibly submit my assignment, I spent that weekend in a slightly dazed, haze of smoke and headphones, occasionally venturing out of the fog to atte, mpt to read...only to find my eyes sliding across the page without really taking it in.

I had chosen my assignment from the list by Sunday, and realised that some research I did for a couple of other papers last year was appropriate to this. Of course it's possible I'll run aground on the fact that I have rehashed a couple of passages from other papers...but I think I'll get away with it, because it's being used to illustrate a different but related point. Anyway...by Monday I was tentatively starting to work my way around the edges o fthe subject, whilst intermittently falling asleep (been knackered all week) or, more often, vanishing off into headphone land..

Tuesday, I mistakenly thought it was Wednesday, and realising my back really was to the wall, I madea concerted effort. Yes, i still took substantial breaks to chill, but I did about 1400 words of a 3000 word paper. Still thought it was Wednesday all the way til I went to bed and suddenly thought to check the day. Woot! I had an extra day! ... Still finding reading very hard work. Essay still vague in my mind. I know my overall argument. I know what it is I am looking to tease out from the evidence; but structuring it and drawing the strands together is not an easy task. So...36 hours until hand in and much to do. As usual in the process of writing it, I also change where I am going with it and spin off into a slightly different direction. *grins* here we go again then. By the middle of Thursday evening, I have hit my stride and rediscovered my perfectionist tendencies. Now it's not good enough to string something vague together, it has to be something I'm reasonably proud to put my name to.

By 9am Friday morning, having worked through on coffee and cigarettes, my mental moorings are starting to come undone...I keep finding myself just staring at the screen with no idea what it was I was about to do (edit that bit, cut that bit, move that around, pick up on the lack of italics in that footnote, or rewrite that paragraph?) All the while referencing the style guide 'cause they've changed how we footnote now.

I finished it, finally at about 10am. I have no ink in the printer, so that means hauling over to uni in time to use the computer hub. They close the doors to the lobby (where the submission trays are) at 12 sharp. Miss that deadline and it's an automatic 5% penalty. I realised I was living in a fantasy land if I thought I could get to uni on bus or train in that time. So, mum to the rescue. She drove me to Leeds and I got the thing printed off and into the submission tray with 20 minutes to go. At this point I realised that I hadn't completed the electronic submission for the online plagiarism check. Shit. Same deadline as paper submission, 5% penalty if you miss either.

At this point I am feeling like someone coming down off an amphetamine rush, and scarper back across campus to the computer hub. All the while mum's waiting parked near uni.

Can't get the f£$%ing file uploaded...there's other people milling about and stress in the air. Then a girl from my course comes over. She's going round letting us know that it's a wider problem. Lots of people can't get into the site, or find the upload screen just hanging til it times out. Turns out the whole system's crashed. So...the undergrad office have started a list. Get your name on that list before the 12 o'clock deadline and that counts as an in-time submission. It's 11:53. I make it. Name on list. All done. Time to go home.

..................

and:

2. My youngest niece really wants to go to Grammar School. She chose to go for the 11+ exam, and I just heard heard she scored 95% overall. She's such a clever little monkey. One of those kids that, every so often, will make your brain hurt. *grins*

wood*nymph 01-24-2009 06:44 AM

He's 2 years old so his bladder can handle it. The door was wide open so if he'd NEEDED to go he could have ran for the door and they would have let him out. He's used to these shifts from time to time from when I used to do this same job before.

When I got home, I got a two second greeting and then practically dragged by force to the backdoor so he could go. :) He took "Stay here" very, very literally.
