When I was weeding and watering the vege garden, I discovered that Max has pulled almost every single almost ready to ripen tomato off the vines and thrown them out on the footpath. I almost turned the hose on him when I saw that we'll barely get anything from them.

sexobon 07-20-2011 08:31 PM

Time to put up some jars of pickled green tomatoes.

Unfortunately, no. Your post just reminded me that my parents pickled green tomatoes from the garden when I was a kid and I couldn't get enough of them. :yum:

Trilby 07-23-2011 07:57 AM

So, Zippy, if I'm hearing you right - you blew a seal?

footfootfoot--Nice clip. I love that show. back at most recent employer the PHB had one of those (and a stable of other ... four wheeled penile prosthetics). I never did score a ride in one dammit. anyway... did the driver say that the red devil was only descending at 30 miles per hour?! he could *ALMOST* land it at 30mph. wow.

30 mph dropping, 100mph forward = let's open the chute this time.

Thanks. I knew I could count on you.

Pete Zicato 08-04-2011 03:24 PM

Damn gawker blockers. Bring four lanes of traffic to a standstill so you can take a peek at the accident pulled over to the side of the road. :mad2:

glatt 08-04-2011 04:17 PM

I think for the most part, rubbernecking is a myth.

I think people slow down because those in front of them slow down. And the first people slowed down for a legitimate reason, like they were trying to avoid smashing into someone.

Clodfobble 08-04-2011 05:11 PM

I think it's at least partially real--in Arizona, they have these things that they deploy whenever there's an accident or stalled car. They're like giant unfoldable walls that are about 15 feet high, and they just stand them up around the entire accident so there's absolutely no way you can see what's going on. Traffic just zips right by.

Edit: I say Arizona, but actually, the only place I saw them was in Phoenix when I was visiting. Could just be a local thing.

Wait, aren't we supposed to move over and slow down in response to wrecks or emergency vehicles on the shoulder? I'm pretty sure in Texas it is illegal not to slow down 10 miles per hour. After all, what's the sense in some poor guy getting his brains scattered across the highway, right in front of his wife and kids, just because he was trying to change a tire, adjacent to the lane that "more important people" have reserved for oh-so important 80mph cruising in their sweet Mustang while chatting on the cell phone about last night's episode of American Idol.

Nirvana 08-04-2011 09:19 PM

I have been in 4 car accidents in my whole life. 3 of them were rear enders in Chicago. All were before cell phones and all because the dumb ass was gawking at an accident. I know your pain Pete! In Chicago it is also customary to drive like a bat out of hell until you get to stopped traffic. ;)

My whole family is sick. The big boys have been off school all week, and Max is snuffling and coughing all over the joint too. Dazza has a cough he can't shake and I just keep almost getting better then getting sick again over night.

It really sux and I'm sick of it. Please God or anyone else who can help, make us all better!

Lola Bunny 08-30-2011 12:55 PM

Yesterday afternoon, I pulled out the trash bag to throw out when the bottom let out and half of the stinky content fell back into the trash can. ARGHHH!!! Some, including the chicken bones, fell out and scattered onto the floor around the area. My sister brought a new bag for me, but she left because the stench would make her gag. I was on my own dumping the nasty trash out and picking the ones to put into the new bag. :thepain3: I have a dull sense of smell so I can handle nasty smell pretty well, but I almost gagged this time. Sigh....I ended up cleaning up the tall trash can, meaning I had to stick my head into the can to clean, clean the kitchen floor, scrub the kitchen slippers, and while I was at it, I cleaned the toilet, bathtub, bathroom sink and floor. Everything is clean now, which is good. But the foul smell put me in a really nasty mood. :greenface

Ungrateful bitchy child.

Oh and (former) Swim team having pool rental raised from $3,000 to $44,000 effective immediately without warning. Oh and being asked for my input/advice when they got the ominous "we need to talk about pool rental" and then not being thanked for my input or included on the bad news/results of the "we need to talk" That's just downright rude.

Sundae 08-30-2011 02:39 PM

Been waiting for a book for two weeks now.
Okay it was 99p.
Okay I chose free shipping.
But I'm sure it should have been here by now!!

No post on Sunday and yesterday was a Bank Holiday (no post) so I was sure it must arrive today.
Nope.

It's like waiting for a toy from a ceral packet to arrive...
Except I'd generally lost interest in them by the time they turned up, and I will still devour this book.

It's just SO LONG COMING!!!

If I had more belief in myself as the centre of the universe, I'd think it was taking so long because I spent every day wishing for it.
But I'm too old for such nonsense, and know it will get here some time after it was posted, wishing or not.

Fingers crossed it's tomorrow!

footfootfoot 08-30-2011 04:25 PM

I'm an impatient bitch, is what it is.

Mum, Dad and I were all out of the house at the same time today. Probably the first time in a month.
What happened?
They tried to deliver something that didn't fit through the letterbox.
I have to wait until 14.30 to collect it.

So something is waiting for me - exciting.
But I'm STILL waiting - bloody hell!

footfootfoot 08-31-2011 02:16 PM

This is maybe more likely what's frosting me today, I just discovered I am about $200 overdrawn. I made a transfer into mrs foot's account to cover a big check she wrote and forgot (after checking) to leave enough $ to cover my outstanding checks.

Fuck

Sundae 08-31-2011 02:52 PM

Silly things, silly things.

My sis contacted me today asking if we'd thought about getting a card from Grandad to Mum.
Good for her - we hadn't.
Grandad is not out of the woods yet, still laid low with a chest infection.
So off I skipped on my second trip to town today to get one.

Came home to find a card on the mantlepiece - 4 days early.
Turns out one of the staff at the home had bought one and filled it out - Grandad managed the two kisses at the bottom.
That was lovely, and really kind. But means the really nice 4 card I bought was worthless. Never mind - I owed dad 4 change from 10 he gave me to buy something yesterday, and he's sucked it up.

So why is it in this thread?
Apparently, Mum was whinging to one of the staff yesterday that this year would be the first she hadn't received a card from her father HINT HINT. Oh how sad, a birthday without a Special Daughter card HINT HINT.

Now Dad has bought said cards for 5-6 years. Okay we did need a reminder from Laura, but we were on it. Someone in the family realised and remembered.

Never mind Mum. Your massive hints got you what you wanted - a card chosen by a member of staff and delivered way before your birthday is now your prize possession.

She has also told everyone in the world (what, not you? just wait) about how her surprise birthday evening was screwed up.
A friend invited her for dinner, saying it was nothing special, and she'd just throw whatever she could find into a pie. The date was the night before her birthday.
Then another friend forwarded an email to the whole group, and at the bottom wrote "See you on Sheila's Birthday Night!"

So now she knows, but hasn't admitted she knows.
Except to everyone else in the County, in a really woeful voice, as if by finding out, someone ran over her kitten or something.
The thing is, Mum hates surprises. She's said to us (in this house) that she was relieved to find out - what if she hadn't dressed up, she'd be SO embarrassed.

Meh.
I won't do anything at all next year.
She'll have the pleasure of complaining all the way through until Christmas.

capnhowdy 09-01-2011 07:29 AM

Damn rabbits and deer in my garden....ok, GAME ON!

BigV 09-01-2011 01:18 PM

foot - I feel for ya. I was overdrawn yesterday. Thank goddess they only charged me 27.00 for a check they would have covered anyway. :(

stugots!

I'm peeved at my two sons. Son number one came down to help me paint a bedroom. Thing is, he's so busy socializing that there is no time to paint. Or do anything. Except eat, sleep and shower.

Same goes for son number two who lives here full time now his father has kicked him out of his nest. I feel like an unappreciated slave/maid. I really do. If they would just HELP OUT once in a fooking blue moon....grrrrrrrrr! I canNOT wait until they have their own places (college house doesn't count as a 'place') so then I can go over and throw all their shite about and devour their food, stop up their toilets and fart on their couches.

Then I'll ask for some 'spending money' and peel out of their driveway - hopefully taking out their rosebush on the way.

jerks.

Pico and ME 09-01-2011 01:47 PM

I'm going through the same thing with my 21 yr stepson. He's not paying rent and he doesn't help out unless asked...and asked..and then cajoled. And then also feels its his right to give lip when he doesn't want to do something. Dad doesn't want to rock the boat so mostly just ignores the situation until I get so fed up I start bitchin, and then maybe the kid perks up. But then the whole cycle just repeats itself all over again after a while.

Roads across our area are being closed by flood waters, not too big a deal right? Just stay home and hole up. My FiL's high maintenance neighbor apparently talked him into driving to the old house he's been fixing up to pick up a shop vac because her basement is wet... Now he is stuck in a house with no food or water. You couldn't friggin wait to vacuum your damn basement? Sending an old man out in a flood, are you kidding me?

Stoopit animals. Wild and tame alike. Holding their cute little poses, doing awesome things. Right up to the moment I touch my finger to the shutter button on my camera.

This afternoon a crow was trying his damnedest to get into our newspaper, which was in a plastic bag in our driveway. He waited around til I got my camera, then just as I touched the shutter...flappityflappityflappity.

I hope he flies into a plate glass window.

Cell phone bill just went up $50 because of the 18 yr old. He had only unlimited texting on his phone because it doesn't cost us any extra; so no calling except for family members. So last month made a small switch to his phone (allowing contacts for his texting) and unbeknownst to us it meant that he could now call at will - AND HE DIDNT LET US KNOW.

He made nearly 1000 minutes worth of calls. Luckily a lot of his calls were mobile to mobile, nights, and weekend minutes, so they didn't count against us, but 200 of them did. It could have been much worse, so Im thankful for that, but damn. I gave him a scare this morning threatening to turn it all off, but later I decided that all I really need to do is teach him how to use the system...and start monitoring his usage. Like I really need that added to my agenda...Fuck.

Rain since Sunday:

http://cellar.org/2011/rainsofar.jpg

Susquehanna River watershed:

http://cellar.org/2011/susquehannawatershed.jpg

If you can see how those two maps converge, ALL of the heavy rain is pretty much directly over the Susquehanna watershed. They track really closely. It's uncanny.

So here it goes again, I lived through two Harrisburg Susquehanna floods and I'm tired of this shit in my lifetime. People, if you are in a floody area, don't build your houses with basements, they will be full of raw sewage every 30 years.

HungLikeJesus 09-08-2011 04:09 PM

Aliantha 09-08-2011 08:19 PM

I have a cough again. To make matters worse (I know it may be tmi) but I've got my period too, and most of the women here will probably agree that there's nothing worse than having a bad cough when you've got your period, except maybe having the runs at the same time. That'd be pretty messy!

All that on top of these withdrawal things I've been having has made my week really suck.

On the bright side, I've given the house and gardens a really good spring clean with Max's help, so at least even though I feel like shit, I'm not sitting in it.

Griff 09-08-2011 08:52 PM

Boss called, no work again tomorrow. This may take a while. My sister and two of my co-workers had to evacuate. I'm up high with good drainage so I'm just keeping my fingers crossed that the power grid stays intact. We're pretty well cut off from everything but "everything" is underwater so we're better off here. A lot of heavy equipment went by this morning, the town between me and New York State had people trapped by the flood waters.

I had heard Binghamton schools were closed again tomorrow. It's crazy, using up your snow days for rain in the first days of the school year. I'm sick of the rain, but at least the flooding hasn't been so destructive here. Trees down here and there, and scattered flooding. We lost power last night as we slept, but I use a battery powered alarm clock, so it didn't mess me up.

TheMercenary 09-08-2011 09:28 PM

We have not gotten enough rain. I wish we could have gotten more of the last TS but it passed us by. Hoping for another big ass storm to fill our ponds and water our crops.

Here's something else from me.

Last week I asked Mav to clean out the inlet filters on the tanks before we started getting the spring storms and he did one, and then I had to go out, but he said he'd do the other one while I was gone.

Anyway, I made a big thing of him doing it without any fuss and nothing more was said.

So today we got a decent bit of rain, so I went to check how much inflow we were picking up now the filters had been cleaned, so I clambered up the ladder for a peek when the rain had slowed back a bit only to find that my blasted son had not entirely cleaned out the second filter at all!

Man I am going to kick his arse when he gets home!

In other news, I am probably the only atheist knifemaker.
