What do you mean by fake sugar? There are many kinds of sugars (5 and 6 carbon); are you saying one of these is more legitimate than all the others?

You can substitute the word "artificial" if you prefer.

The sensation of sweetness caused by these compounds (the "sweetness profile") is sometimes notably different from sucrose, so they are often used in complex mixtures that achieve the most natural sweet sensation.

skysidhe 05-18-2011 02:28 PM

I can't believe they taste less sweet than the UK counterparts.
I think they are very sweet, and the UK doesn't use high fructose corn syrup?

That's a beautiful thing, if so.

I don't think we do use that high fructose corn syrup much over here. We use glucose syrup though, which is made from grain starch, either corn or wheat or whatever.

footfootfoot 05-18-2011 03:24 PM

We only use the corn syrup because we are subsidizing the corn farmers

skysidhe 05-18-2011 03:28 PM

According to a TIME article, Glucose seems to be the better sugar.

Glucose: The teacher's pet of sugar.
Mom loved Glucose the best. -- Fructose
Why can't you be more like Glucose?

DanaC 05-18-2011 04:08 PM

I think we use fructose as well, but it's not the high fructose corn syrup.
