Cool new boat

This could be in sports, entertainment, or some esoteric outdoors thread, but since we don't have one, check out this cool boat.

It's a cross between a kayak and a jet ski. Sweet.

Maybe, but I don't think it would have the same degree of lateral stability. I like the way this one is so stable.

It used to be that if you wanted to get away from it all for some peace and quiet, you could go to some remote stream with your kayak. Leave all the trappings of city life behind.

Now the loud motorboats can follow you there too.

I don't like the idea of the Mokai, although it looks like fun.

Notice that in the video they don't have the sound turned on? Thats because if you heard these things you would realize that they destroy the peace and quiet of the areas they visit.

glatt, that's exactly what I was thinking. If you want to get to the wilderness, get there on your own power.

Every party has a pooper, that's why we invited you....

j/k Actually, I would be really really pissed if I was trying to enjoy some peace and quiet out in the middle of nowhere, and some a-hole came zooming by in one of those. Although, this doesn't look like you'd be tearing around in it like someone would on a jet ski...

Using the newly installed SenDEC digital tachometer and hour meter and my Radio Shack sound meter, I made several measurements out in the middle of the lake - keeping far away from the drag boats and personal watercraft that were making a lot of noise.

At idle speed (approx. 1150 - 1200 RPM) the sound level was consistently 70 to 72 dBA, at full throttle (3650 RPM) the level was 92 dBA. A jet flyover at 1,000 feet is about 105 dBA. Charts I have show a gas powered lawn mower at 100 feet at 70 dBA and 95 dBA at 3 feet. The measurements I took were with the sound meter about 3 feet from the engine, which I think shows the benefit of having the engine enclosed.

For myself, a pair of disposable ear plugs keeps me comfortable while cruising. We are going to do some more testing using some of the techniques we used to quiet down RV generators - we will report on our progress.

Ear plugs huh?

When I kayak on a still lake in the morning or evening when there is no wind and the water's surface is like a mirror, I try to limit the drips coming off of my paddle so I make no noise at all. You can sneak up on wildlife that way.

These guys are talking about wearing earplugs.

yeah, those critters will be long gone before you can get a shot off, if your watercraft is so loud you need earplugs.
