--what do you call that piece of living room furniture you sit on? A couch? sofa? davenport? divan?

--what do you call fizzy sweet drinks like Coca Cola? a soft drink? soda? pop? sodapop?

--do you put an "s" at the end of toward? i.e., "towards"?

To me, it's not the plurality of the subject, but whether there is movement. So I'd agree with both your example sentences: because toward means a certain direction while towards means actually moving in that direction. (To me, anyway--I'm not saying there's a grammatical rule about that...)

you may be onto something there. I noticed when i was making the example sentences that headed sounded better in the second one....
