LCD Screen Protectors

Check out "my" Nintendo DS below--specifically, the two LCD screens.

I use the scare quotes because I use it 2 or 3 times a week, while my daughter practically lives and dies by Animal Crossing. (Actually, I like it too, but I stopped playing because we were just aggravating each other with competing things we wanted to do with the town. I'm now doing Under The Knife, Tetris, and Feel The Magic.)

Anyway. As you can see the screens have taken some heavy wear. The problem is, with the introduction of the DS Lite over the summer, nobody sells accessories for the original DS anymore. And that means no replacement screen protectors. And no, the ones from the DS Lite won't fit--the screens are different sizes.

Surely there's a suitable material that will serve the purpose, not cost an arm and a leg when bought in sheets, and have a suitable adhesive (meaning it attaches firmly but not permanently, and doesn't leave goop behind.

Any suggestions?

(Besides banning her from using it, which believe me has happened, but I'm not interested in doing on a permanent basis.)

Steve, I don't know how big that thing is, but my full face respirator has these tear away plastic guards which prevent the face shield from scratching. There is a stack of three of them that adhere to the shield, when they get boogered up you peel it off and so on until you've none left.

Motocross riders use them too for mud. The shields are usually polycarbonate so the adhesive isn't an issue.

Another trick which may work is to use acetate sheets available at most drafting supply or art supply places and carefully cut them to size and with a drop or two of glycerin squeegee the acetate in place. Not sure how well this will work, but we used to do that to get color correction gels to stick to windows for shoots.

Clear contact paper?

Hmmm.. interesting ideas. Each screen is about 2 x 2.5" (I didn't actually measure).

You can get PDA screen protectors from Best Buy, etc. Something like 10-12 sheets that you can cut to fit with a ruler and a razor blade.

SD, my friend. Please don't worry, I have both systems, and the screens are identical on both units. If you pick up a pack of DS Lite protectors and use them on your DS, and don't tell anybody, nobody will ever know.

For the record, I have a set of Pelican (I think) shields on my DS (also blue, purty, ain't it?). The shields are actually virgins. The prophylactic has been in place since I took it out of the box--never touched it. With the stylus, that is. I did clean it with the included microfiber cloth before sealing it up.

On yet another note, I am a big Tetris fan, we should swap friend codes. I'd look for you each time I was online. Do you have one of the Nintendo USB WAPs? Way cool, and soooper easy to work with? I have one (natch), and I usually carry it with me. If interested, pm me.
