My Father's Knee

Yes, it really is what the title suggests - pictures of my beloved father's knee!

He went in for a knee replacement op about 2 weeks ago now. The operation was successful and all went as planned at the business end but he developed a blood clot on his left lung. This meant an extra 3 nights in hospital, and Mum having to inject him in the stomach for 5 nights after he got home.

He's now on oral tablets and will continue to be for the next 3-5 months. No alcohol over Christmas and New Year - poor Dads.

Anyway, apologies for the quality of the pictures - taken by Mum and sent to me manually - as I don't have a scanner you are looking at a picture of a picture.

The white stockings are hospital issue btw, he doesn't usually wear them.

Was this the result of that slipping on peanut butter accident you described?

Seriously, I hope he recovers soon.

Wow, that is quite a zipper. I hope he comes through well.

second hand experience (FiL) says get'em both done. they both have the same mileage and the change in the gait will transfer the new load to places unacustomed to the change. In his case, his hip is now in serious trouble

I've had two people tell me they wish they had them both done at once, because once they recover....they're never going through that again.

True story:
Hi Pop, how's the knee.
OK.
Um,....well, it's only been three days, does it hurt?
Nope.
Hmmm, good medications... must be sore?
Not bad.
That's amazing, Pop. I should think it would be annoying.
I've been married for almost 50 years.

As his operation is on the NHS, he doesn't get to choose how much he has done at one time. His good friend (and ex-jogging partner) went through exactly what you described - one knee one year, the next 18 months later.

I'll keep my fingers crossed that he doesn't have to go in again - too many people catching bugs in hospitals at the moment for my liking.

He has his clips out in the local GP surgery today. Makes me shudder just thinking about it.

Ohh my Dad has one that matches it exactly!! He's had his knee done twice.

The first time lasted 5 years, then he got a bone infection, so they pulled the replacement out, filled the knee with cement and tried to treat the infection before they put in a new banger.

Now he has had his opposite hip done, it packed it in due to the weird gait he developed because of the crap knee.

Me - I'm on my 2nd reconstruction.

We've all got crap knees.

Best wishes to your Dad Sundae Girl!!!
