Photoshop users: What the hell is this?

It appears and then disappears. I don't remember what it is, and it bugs the shit out of me. The 01 and the little icon for all you would be wise acres.

I want to say it has something to do with levels, but not real sure. When does it pop up?

It's slices. Because you haven't defined any slices, you have only one, and it's designated as such. Turn it off via View->Show.

Slices can be used to , amongst other things, break up an image into different pieces, so that they can be laid out on the web using different parts.
