Westboro Baptist church picket schedule
If you don't know who they are, then count your lucky stars. This "Christian church" is pathetic and disgusting. I've been working to ignore them, but that is probably not the right action to take. With people like these tho, with their heads so far up their leader's ass, there is probably no right course of action.
Anyway this little article in the Dailybeast reminded me of Westboro Baptist church. LINK Quote:
Here's the link to the picket schedule: http://www.godhatesfags.com/schedule.html and one of their websites: http://www.godhatesfags.com/ Don't worry there are more sites, God doesn't just hate fags. Of special note they will be protesting the memorial of Pfc. Matthew W. Wilson Aug 19 in Arlington Virginia. A specially vile and disgusting thing to do in my opinion. Link to that: http://www.godhatesfags.com/written/...W-Wilson-g.pdf

The picket schedule may provide good clues, but the last time I used it they didn't show up.
I never figured out why they propagandized the coming event and never showed. Curiouser and curiouser.................?

Fred Phelps and his clan are an oozing chancre on the infected bum of Topeka and the entire Midwest. These people are going to be so shocked when they stand before their God, expecting their reward, and end up roasting on the spit of some flaming demon cocks rammed up their bigoted, twisted, assholes.
Ptui. I spit on scum.

Nice idea, 'spode. Mine is less dramatic, but reasonably satisfying. A life spent in the pursuit of paradise simpy snuffed out in a cold hard grave. Oh dear, never mind.
I hope they choke on their own hate. Surely this has to be a case of Phelps protesting too much - I mean, really. How can homosexuality be accorded as such a major sin unless someone finds it very, very tempting indeed?

What truly sickens me is that people take that crazy, fucked up way of thinking and apply it to ALL Christians, and that's unfair. There are those of us Christians who I guess would be considered "moderate", that believe that what you do with your life and sexuality is your business. When I stand in front of my Creator, no one will be standing with me, and I will be judged on my actions, held responsible for my choices. I believe every person will do that. To me, that is enough. I don't get to agree or disagree with your choice because it's just that: your choice. Who am I to change you?? It is not for me to judge anyone else, and it's not for any of these fucks to judge anyone else, either. [/rant]

Trouble is, OC - the most vocal homophobes are - or call themselves - Christian.
It gives them a moral high ground to spread the agent orange of their hate from. And sadly, it's based on far less evidence in the Bible than many things which are disregarded by mainstream Christianity. I honestly believe I can see all sides of it, in that I was brought up Catholic and genuinely believed in God, and that homosexuality was a sin, a symptom of degeneracy, a sickness that people needed to be cured from. My father, who I adore, who is the man that every man needs to measure up to in my lief, is homophobic. The closest male friend I had, admitted to knee-jerk homophobia. He was quintessetially liberal - his brother was gay and his best (male) friend was gay. He didn't hate gay men, but had an intrinsic revulsion for man-on-man action which he strove to overcome in order to be fair. I don't judge people on anything other than their hate. I have no religious belief at all now. It bothers me that Chritians and Muslims hold such sway in political opinion in this country. No offence intended but being a non-believer it pisses me off that I'm ruled by someone else's magic book. I know it's worse (by my reckoning) in America. Onyx, I applaud your "judge not lest you be judged" attitude. I know the Cellar is no place to be spouting anti-gay rhetoric, but I am always relieved to meet Christ-emulating Christians. There are too many of the other sort out there imho. And without being a 'basher - I have met them. I just happen to live with two who aren't. Just wish I could get Dads to change his mind on teh ghey issue.

It also makes it hard to debate any issue, because as soon as you identify yourself as a Christian, many people automatically dismiss you as homophobic, ignorant, or silly or just plain stupid. And I'm none of those things. Once again, more knee-jerk reaction at work. Quote:

Many men have a visceral anti-gay reaction to man sex. One of the reasons may be that they know in their hearts that they could enjoy at least being on the receiving end of some man sex. But that is taboo, so it bothers them.
Back many years ago, when I was at Yale Divinity School, one of my friends was totally opposed to oral sex. He said that he would kick a woman out of bed if she tried something like that on him. Clearly, he had some problems. Oddly enough, his name was Claude Peters, but I will let that one go. The thing is that the conservative, particularly Catholic, teachings on sex are just flat ignored by the overwhelming majority. The number of couples who are virgins when they get married for the first time is statistically insignificant. Masturbation, accouding to the Pope, is "a seriously disordered act." Yet it is a universal practice. Just about the only thing that some people pay attention to is the prohibition on homosexuality. But it is part and parcel of archaic nonsense on sex and sexuality that goes back to a patriarchial society. Such ideas are simply not rational. Fortunately, some churches, such as the Episcopal Church in America, have taken a decent stance, and it has cost some members. But that church is doing well, really. The local parish to which I go has a Lesbian priest as the rector. Everybody seems to get along OK. The proper thing that the church should do is to deal with the new ideas about sexuality by developing a moral theology on the topic. In an age of sexual freedom, what are the proper standards for behavior? I don't mean a set of fixed rules, but just because we have freedom it does not follow that any behavior is OK. For example, be realistic. I told my daughter that the first person she had sex with was probably not going to be the only one, and that it was likely that she have several romances before she found the one she wanted to be with permanantly. Right now she is on guy #3 (well, that I know of), and it looks like this is going to last. I was at an Episcopal Church in Houston in the 1980's, and about 1/3 of the congregation was gay. Surely the rector knew, but he acted, and preached as if everybody was straight. Not actually much of a help to the gay guys. |

Oh gawd, the "I'm a good Christian angle." If half the people who spouted that lived by it, the world might be a nicer place. Mostly it's a place to hide when you can't deal with the fact that you're a fucked up human being like everybody else.
