October 25, 2013 - The Komondor

Meet the Komondor!

This is a breed from Hungary. The long hair developed so the dogs could blend in with their large herds of sheep and cattle, be protected in case of attack and also to keep them snuggly warm when the weather turned nasty.

They are the body guards of the herd.

They think the Komondor is a descendent of the Aftscharka. The Huns found the Aftscharka in Russia, but it doesn’t say how they became the Komondor.

'Komondor' is a Hungarian phrase meaning "Constant dingleberries".

I've always had a soft spot for Komonodors. Pulis* too.

I used to joke that Pilau looked like a Komondor when his coat went too far down the straggly shaggy road.

What I think is really cool about the Komondors is they were just screwing around, waiting on an equipment repair, when they came up with Brick House.

The dog lives with the sheep, grows hair like the sheep, and appears to need to be sheared occasionally, like the sheep.

Does seem cruel to force the dog to wear a 30 lb coat of mostly matted hair, though.

That's better than the Pug or English Bulldog though. In those breeds some maniac thought it was cute to develop breeds that can't breathe worth a tinker's damn.
