Five second rule has been argued forever. But it's really a moot point considering how infested the grubby little urchins are.

While some of these tiny life forms can cause illness, most of the time they live in harmony with their larger human hosts: in our mouth, up our nose, and on our skin.

Using a petri plate filled with a nutrient broth commonly used in labs, Tasha Sturm, a microbiology tech at Cabrillo College in California, gently stamped her 8-year-old's hand on the plate one morning after he had finished getting ready for the day, cleaned up a few things in the back yard, and pet the dog, she told Business Insider. He was not sick at the time.

Sturm then incubated the petri dish at body temperature, or 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit. Two days later, the bacteria that were transferred to the dish had built a blooming colony.
