China Strives to Help Deaf Kids Recover Hearing

China has devoted no fewer efforts to helping deaf children and treating their handicap than developed countries since March 3 was designated "National Ear Care Day" two years ago.
Li Xue, a seven-year-old deaf girl being cared for at the hearing recovery center for deaf children in this capital of northeast China's Heilongjiang Province, can now enunciate greetings to guests clearly and even recite a nursery rhyme.

According to Han Yougui, the center's director, Li Xue is now able to communicate with others in simple sentences, following a period of special hearing training, which started last February.

Currently, the center has 12 teachers, who look after deaf children full time.

Statistics show that China now has 20.75 million people disabled in hearing and language, and deaf children under seven years old number 800,000.

Experts consider that the majority of deaf children can recover their hearing and participate fully in social life by wearing hearing aids or receiving scientific language training.

of the ecological and geological evolution of the area.
