Not surprised.
What I am now interested in hearing is why he chose that particular name. Incidentally, I heard it here first. The Cellar is my primary news source. Only after I read SM's post did I check Fox News.

I told you in the other thread that this pope is next to last, based on St. Malachy.

I read a couple things about name choice and how it reflects on the ideals of the pope. Like, if he had chosen Pius, it would've indicated he was against Vatican II, and if he chose JPIII, it would show that he's going to continue JPII's work. Benedict seems to carry very little political baggage, at least to my untrained eye.
I'd be impressed if he decided to actually fix the Catholic Church. But to do that, he'd have to admit that no human being can be the "infallible voice of God" or whatever nonsense they call him, and then he'd be just another worker bee. Kind of Christlike, really, but oh well. We have traditions to uphold. [/teeny troll]

Rather concervative type it seems. Well, he is nearly 80, there'll be a new one before long. JP2 was an anomoly.

actually, from the cached site, it says that peter (the one after benedict) will NOT be the last pope. he says there will be many more popes until christ returns, in 2437.

Conte's full of shit. Stretching doesn't begin to describe what he's done to Malachy's list.

ah, the wonder of isogesis - reading one's conclusion into the text. Seems normal with most "fulfilled" prophecies.
linked it for entertainment value, btw, not as a real substantive piece of prophetic wonder.

It's so nice to have a pope who was a hitler youth. I'm sure he'll be an understanding, tolerant, kind-hearted, flexible pope who loves everyone including sinners just like all the hitler youth who grew up and became professors of dogmatic theology with Marxist leanings.
