Forget the spermicide. It is no longer sold (here, at least) because it isn't very effective.

Condoms, the pill, maybe an IUD are your main options I think. Oh yeah and abstinence. That's the secret. Abstinence. ;)

Seriously, combining condoms and the pill is probably the safest. You two are such young and fertile little puppies, you probably shouldn't even eat wholegrain crackers in bed, in case they germinate. Try explaining THAT to her parents!

You could also try avoiding sex around the time she's ovulating (which is generally 12 - 16 days after the first day of her last period).

There's all sorts of new options including a vaginal ring, a patch, three-month injection.

Those injections are a bit tricky sometimes. They can affect some women emotionally in that they react with the hormones naturally produced and can cause depression and other nasty side effects such as mood swings and get this...loss of sex drive.

If I had a teenage daughter, I'd be using those injections as a last resort.

I was on the injections for years with no problems. I'd recommend them personally. But then I'd recommend the implant even more. It's good not to have to remember to take something, and not to have it affected by illness.

But as Ali says, she needs to be fully aware of potential side effects before she uses any medical form of birth control.

I was speaking from personal experience with the injections, so it definitely happens. I was a lunatic for about 6 months. lol Some might even argue that I've never fully recovered.

I know at least 1 person who had serious issues with the injections. Had some inflammatory issues even.
I personally love the pill, i don't mind takin it since i already got to take vitamins everyday (everyone should!).
Spermicide is just more mess to add to your already awkward situation with condoms. Although, some condoms come with that already built in I believe. I'd say if she doesn't want the pill (which would do great for her skin, regulation, and mood swings anyway), ask her about tryin a IUD. If she's hesitant about goin to the gyno for that stuff
A) She's sexually active, too bad, she has to
B) offer to go with her (and pay half)

Why is she hesitant about you giving her oral? I have some great tips (for her and you) about getting over that nervousness...I had it too.

Oh, what memories. One time I went to the doctor for that female stuff - I think I was 17 - and we'd had a bunch of snow the day before. I was driving this big Chevy sedan and *got stuck* in the parking lot. Oh my GOD I was scared. It was supposed to be a SECRET and here I'd have to call my parents to get me unstuck. Fortunately I was able to rock my way out of it, whew! :D

Now, Ib, as a mom...obviously I have no idea what her parents are like...but if my daughter were to find herself in this situation I would hope she would come to me. I'd be sad and disapproving, but all parents were once horny teenagers too. I'd be proud of her for taking responsibility for it instead of just hoping for the best. So you never know; don't discount it as an option - it is better than having an Ibby Jr.
