CHAT:
It's not for everyone. Including me.

skysidhe 06-06-2009 09:36 AM

I am too slow for chat. By the time I think of something witty to say to comment #1 people are on to comment #3. There's big silences.

I like looking at faces touching ect.

Some people are good chatting blind.

I need all of my faculties to chat even in rl.

Undertoad 06-06-2009 09:40 AM

I've long been in favor of posting the chat logs.

jinx 06-06-2009 11:01 AM

Chat is people you know from the cellar having a beer and shooting the shit. There's a hell of a lot less drama there, and I can't think of any 'shit' from there that's spilled out onto the cellar - in general the flow is the opposite way. But mostly, people just want to relax and chat.

Shawnee123 06-06-2009 11:33 AM

I don't chat often, but when I have I've enjoyed it. It is a lot like hanging out in the bar with some buddies. Unless someone is a jerk, everyone gets along and laughs. That's been my experience, anyway.

classicman 06-06-2009 12:35 PM

And with the "Chat Police" the jerks can be booted.
FWIW - I have talked to a few people in chat who have not joined or had not at that time.

It has changed the culture. But I'm not entirely sure quite how. Or whether or not it's a good thing. In some ways it is. It does allow you to get to know people at a slightly more immediate level. I just wish i didn't have to become nocturnal to take part lol.

UK chat time might be when ... ? (Not at the moment - got a lot on ... but in principle)?

That would be interesting, to say the least. I thought chat kinda drifted off in interwebz space after it scrolled off the top of the screen. Like a radio transmission.

morethanpretty 06-06-2009 10:22 PM

Chat is meant to not be permanent. I would stop hanging out there if it were. When I post on the cellar I have to take into account that the wrong person might read my post, or that I'll have to re-read it and regret it. Not really either of those worries with chat.
I think its bullshit that its even being brought up. Drama spills over into chat more often then the other way around. That is why its kept "drama free."
Point out examples of "chat drama spilling over."

xoxoxoBruce 06-06-2009 10:49 PM

LJ starting a thread about Big V because of some bullshit in chat.

lumberjim 06-06-2009 11:06 PM

yep.

but wut crawled up yer ass?

Thats why I said this. I will contend that the whole LJ-bigV thread stemmed from LJ having a problem with BigV from the cellar board before the chat thing ever happened.

xoxoxoBruce 06-06-2009 11:19 PM

I stated that the opposite of what UT said is also true, that's all.
I've seen any number of snarky remarks that the poster claimed was justified because of some undefined thing the targeted person said/did in chat or a PM. That leaves the rest of the board up in the air as to whether it was justified, or the poster was just being shitty. It's like listening to one end of a phone conversation.

Nothing crawls up my ass, everything is outbound.

How about if we just post the funny stuff from chat in its own forum!

I don't think chat logs should be posted, but there are issues with chat which bother me and are a big part of the reason i don't do it anymore much. One of the biggest issues I have is with people impersonating others. At one stage when I was having a problem with some of the people who chat regularly, I found that someone was pretending to be me and of course causing more confusion and angst for me and some others.

I believe this is the sort of childish behaviour which causes trouble on the board from chat.

That being said, I still think that chat should just stay as it is. It's just a part of this site now and I think as a general rule we've all adapted to it quite nicely.

DanaC 06-07-2009 05:54 AM

I think the dwellars posing as other dwellar thing has pretty much stopped. Havent seen anybody do that in ages.

[eta] I hate the idea of Chat logs being posted. It pisses me off when people post chunks of chat when they've had an argument. Don;t mind so much for humour; that's just sharing with those who missed a good joke. But when it's dragged out to support someone's claims of injury or offense, I really don't like it. I don;t like private messages being posted either.

We shouldn't have to be careful in Chat. That's where you kick back and just be yourself without thinking about typos, or having something taken the wrong way and then picked over letter by letter for the next week. If something does get taken the wrong way the Chat moves on and it becomes quickly irrelevant. Not so if it's posted as a log.

Just my tup'enn'orth.

ZenGum 06-07-2009 07:28 AM

Hung Like Jesus hasn't been here since the 14th of May.

Crap, did they leave him up on the cross again?

But for our feel-good story for tonight, TheAlphaJerk has been around with some bacon porn, so he didn't get all crispy-fried in the fires. :)

Oh, and, wot Dana said.

zippyt 06-07-2009 11:59 AM

What Dana said ,

May I suggest that things get changed in chat so it logs you in as yer celler name , that would alleviate the goofy name stuff , though it is Fun trying to guess who some random person is .

richlevy 06-07-2009 12:14 PM

Just remember, that the last few pages of posts in the main chatroom stay up there for anyone to see when they log in hours later.

One reason I use my real name as my username is to remind myself that I have to stand up for whatever I say. I have pissed off people here before and I'll do it again. That being said, I support people being anonymous, but not using someone else's Cellar handle.

I don't think public chat is private and needs to be treated as such. If someone opens a private chat or sends an e-mail then different rules apply.

I like Jim and Jinx and hope that they stay. I occasionally find him annoying and we have had some serious disagreements, but he's a supportive member of the community.

Heck, if this were the Love Boat, he'd be the cruise director.;)

That is exactly what scared me away from chat last time I tried it out (I was on last night - I mean, before then.). I got on and people were pretending to be other people - and I felt like a real dim bulb for being fooled. I figured I'd missed some memo or wasn't quick enough at picking up clues, and thought screw this, I'll just stick to regular forum posting.

Then again, people use sock puppets on the forum all the time, so I guess it's just like a box of chocolates. The kind that doesn't come with a guide telling you whether it's vanilla or cherry nougat. Whatcha gonna do? Just take a bite and spit it out if you don't like it.

Ditto. I stopped chatting (and responding to many threads) because I felt like I was always dodging bullets, Matrix-style. Fade out, stay out of the way, resurface when it's calmer.

I'm allergic to forum-drama. Personal drama in individuals' lives I can take; a little sympathy, perhaps a suggestion if applicable, a few wishes of goodwill. When people start throwing mud at each other, :bolt:

It's a real pity that it's so prevalent right now.

Whether it's tiki or V or RichLevy or whatever person of the week who decides to shit all over my husband, point out how much they dislike him, or call him A BAD FUCKING PERSON - I'm done with it. No, Jim doesn't need anybody to back him up - he doesn't need to waste his time entertaining you fuckers who just take, take, take and take some more either.

That's funny because I come here because of you and Jim, not discounting the handful of others.

Jim doesn't need any back up. Jim goes without saying. :) That being said: If you can't even manage to get along with Jim then you might be a piker.

Oh hai guys! What storm of doodoo did I walk into here?

Nah, he has just been busy with work.

Gravdigr 06-07-2009 03:57 PM

(sigh) You people just tickle the shit outta me sometimes!!:p

Shawnee123 06-07-2009 04:45 PM

I like when people cry about other people getting into arguments. Why is that the "just ignore it if you don't like it" advice that one hears all the time applies to everything BUT that? "I hate fights, and read every word of that last one. You people appall me." Wut the pluck?

disclaimer: no actual quotes were repeated in the making of this post

Clodfobble 06-07-2009 05:00 PM

There's a difference between ignoring a troll who is spewing nonsense, and ignoring it when two or more people you like and consider your friends are saying terrible things to each other. Strangers fighting = none of my business. My friends fighting = does and should elicit an emotional response in me.

Pie 06-07-2009 05:31 PM

Right on, Clod. Tiki didn't rile me up 'cause I don't know the bitch, see?

richlevy 06-07-2009 07:54 PM

I have had honest disagreements with peoples positions on many issues. I have also poked fun at some people, mostly in what I hope is understood to be humor. I really do try to keep from labeling people as 'psycho' or 'dumbass' or some other stereotype. In situations where there was a serious potential for a flame war, I have done everything except actually lie to defuse the situation, since I prefer 'no drama'. This has not always worked well.

In the end the Cellar is a reflection of real life. Trying to sort out if one side was being offensive or abusive or the other side was being thin skinned is usually futile and divisive. Sometimes people should just be allowed to argue between themselves without others piling on, even if it's in a public forum.

TheMercenary 06-07-2009 08:29 PM

monster 06-07-2009 11:10 PM

next person to comment on anything other than a missing dwellar is a stupid poopy-head......

Aliantha 06-08-2009 12:20 AM

Just like me. :)

capnhowdy 06-08-2009 06:27 AM

What if we comment on a stoopid poopy head missing Dwellar?

Crimson Ghost 06-08-2009 11:34 AM

Have anyone in mind?

Tomas Rueda, perhaps?

Queen of the Ryche 06-08-2009 11:40 AM

My vote is for Henry Quirk!

monster 06-08-2009 11:43 AM

could we have two lists? one for dwellars that we miss and one for dwellar who are simply missing? :p

monster 06-08-2009 11:43 AM

.....and maybe also one for dwellars who are just simple?

monster 06-08-2009 12:02 PM

Where is that Shawnee anyway? haven't seen her around for a while. mind you, she's such a quiet soul, you hardly notice when she is here....

Shawnee123 06-08-2009 12:21 PM

*shrugs*

Who knows...that girl can't stay in one spot for long.

classicman 06-08-2009 12:28 PM

rolling stone - no moss.... whatever. My guess is that she is probably workin 3 or 4 jobs by now to afford her lavish lifestyle. Prolly no time for the interwebs with her schedule. Oh and she's living on granola bars and Redbull.

Shawnee123 06-08-2009 12:32 PM

Coffee and cigarettes, but close enough. ;)

monster 06-08-2009 12:54 PM

meh, she was batshit insane anyways

Shawnee123 06-08-2009 12:58 PM

That was part of her charm, imho. Sigh...I really miss that girl.

monster 06-08-2009 01:00 PM

who?

Shawnee123 06-08-2009 01:03 PM

I dunno...some forgettable girl, I guess.

monster 06-08-2009 01:09 PM

Oh, that reminds me, I wonder what happened to that chick who worked with students? the Financial Aid application person?

DanaC 06-08-2009 01:15 PM

The one we all thought was a bitch?

Shawnee123 06-08-2009 01:16 PM

I think she went to prison for killing a few students. I think it was on a Monday. They're considering the death penalty.

It's sad, really...such potential.

Shawnee123 06-08-2009 01:38 PM

Oh, never mind. I found her. They appointed her Queen Goddess of the Planet.

Sundae 06-08-2009 02:00 PM

Oh God shut up!

Look, I am still in contact with her.
She is still beautiful but doesn't know it.
Vulnerable, but has a temper.
Caring and infinitely.
And shush.

Just leave her alone and get on with missing people damn you.
She's une déesse dans ma poche.

Instead of smoted, what about besotted? I have a vendor for that.

Shawnee123 06-08-2009 02:25 PM

Today I cannot smote. Smoting occurs Tues-Fri 8 am to 5 pm. Also, you missed the deadline for summer smoting, and may have to come up with out of pocket smote for which you will be reimbursed should we determine you ultimately have smote eligibility.

Please fill out all appropriate forms in triplicate and allow 6,785 business days for processing.

(They're killing me here today.)

Pie 06-08-2009 02:29 PM

smite - smote -smotted - smut.

(Whatever works for you.)
