I've been looking for ages for a vid of The Other Side of Summer by Elvis Costello.
All I've come across are lame covers.

This is a cover, so it has none of the polish or production of the original, but for one man and a guitar he does damn well. It's raw, but it's true to the original. And as I lost my copy of Mighty Like a Rose a few moves back, it will suffice. I'm pretty sure the original is faster though. (Just checked) this is 3.35 and the original is 3.56, so maybe not.

Yay! More Cosmo Jarvis big-up.
Look out for Maxine. Dirty and grim in a very different way. Lyrics NSFW.

ETA - I had lots of windows open when I posted this.
I'm sure one of them was about Gay Pirates.
I did post the wrong response in the wrong thread.

But hey. Enjoy the rest of my links.

Sundae 04-02-2011 01:57 PM

Via my bro.
Educational, but bless They Might Be Giants, they haven't lost it.
Had I seen this before starting Chemistry I might have given it more of a chance. I skidded over the classes purely because of the maths.

And I had to add this one...
Maxine, Cosmo Jarvis. Forgive me if I already shared this.
NSFW as it's bloody. As in using the word bloody and the implied violence...

Sundae 04-02-2011 02:27 PM

What's the plural of tailpost?
Tailpost whore I guess.

Whatever. I already killed my hobos today, I deserve something to relax me.

DanaC, this is for you.
TLoG instrumentals.
Does not include the beautiful Christmas music, but does include the theme I adore from Series Three While There's Still Time.

And it's still one half of the Divine Comedy (Joby Talbot) and I like it muchly.

Hint. A Dwellar might be getting something in the post. It might help her enjoy mayonnaise and yoghurt...
Unless I decide she's horribly spoilt and punish her for not posting any photos of London.

jimhelm 04-02-2011 02:51 PM

is it just me, or does yogurt sound gross when you spell it with an H?

Sundae 04-03-2011 05:37 AM

It's just you.

In French it's pronouned "yow-oort"
I've always liked that.

DanaC 04-03-2011 07:50 AM

Awww man. Oh I might ave to go back and rewatch the League. From the start. That music's proper put me in the mood. Fuck yeah.

I will, I promise get pics sorted out. But I have been having some puter probs. I finally got myself to start editing the pics and the bastard crashed, for the third time this weekend. It's being a cunt.

Gonna follow up that wonderful TLoG music with some Divine Comedy: also used as the theme to Father Ted.

And the wonderful Our Mutual Friend: bit of an annoying hiss on it, but it's such a stellar performance it's worth it.

There's a whole DVD of songs like that called "Here Comes Science." It's one of the kids' favorites.

Tera Naomi has some serious pipes. This just looks like a fun time.

Happened across this quite by accident, Not normally my sort of thing at all, but ....wow...

this version is no video, but better sound quality

Sundae 05-13-2011 04:02 PM

Don't like Cohen as sounds like a hoover.
My ex housemate (formerly known as HS) sounded like a waste disposal unit. And he practised this constantly.

But I like a bit of the Lang, and this was lovely. Thanks.

In return all I have to offer is something I am simply evangelical about.
I don't go door to door. I don't ask for tithes. I don't tell you not to celebrate Christmas. I just post Finn Brothers/ Crowded House vids from time to time.

This is an old one.
It's been in my blood since the early 90s at least.
And I still can't separate the different strands of harmony. Not because this song is exceptional (although it is in other ways) just because I am shite like that.

Anyone more talented than I am in this way (everyone?) feel free to post the two different parts, and I can finally choose which to sing in the shower.

Oh that was really lovely Infi! Great vibe.

@ Sundae: I am a huge fan of the Cohen, but I know what you mean about his voice :p

He always said himself he was a poet more than a singer.

Here are two that I just adore though. The trick with Cohen is to listen to him as a story teller and poet.

The Partisan: This performance has added resonance I think, because it was recorded in France.

This next one is Joan of Arc. Probably one of my favourite songs of all time. I just think it's pure poetry. It is a duet between Joan and the Fire. Jennifer Warnes has a beautiful, soaring voice as Joan, and Cohen's gravelly voice works as The Fire. Listen to the words, it's a fabulous concept. Gorgeous violin as well.

casimendocina 05-21-2011 01:18 AM

Hey Dana, thanks to your post, I've just gone back and revisited all the Leonard Cohen songs I love, but sung by other people, particularly those done by Rufus Wainwright. Saw L.C. last year live and it's up there with the best concerts I've ever seen, but other people do the singing part of his songs better than he does.

Sundae, have you heard Boy and Bear's cover of Fall at your Feet?

I like it better than the original.

DanaC 05-21-2011 08:59 AM

Rufus Wainwright's rendition of Hallelujah gives me shivers.

That is so cool. I've seen it live and it was great, but having it in this form means his arguments can be revisited...just getting my head around the fact that a lot of the time he lapses into incoherence and gets a laugh out of finishing sentences with "and stuff" but then produces work like this. And while I'm wondering about the enigma that is Tim Minchin, I wonder how many tidal waves he's created when people recognise that they're become one of the rants in his shows.

As for LC, the word 'sublime' which he used to describe his backup singers should also be used to describe him.

Really liked that one Sullage.

J recently introduced me to a band called The Decemberists. They're really interesting. This is the first one of theirs that I heard. It blew me away.

@ Sundae: given how much you enjoyed the Gay Pirates, you might get a kick out of this one.

I'm posting the one with the lyrics on, because the guy has a really strange intonation at times. It has one of the most awesome choruses I have heard in ages.

I love the Decemberists. Have you guys heard the Mountain Goats? If not, check out "Dance Music" (really cool clip with sock puppets) and "This Year".

Soothe the Say by Pendulous Frankfurters.

I've always loved Pendulous Frankfurters. They're so damn pendulous, and frankish. It's genius.

And Time for your Apple by GP and the Ceegees.

Good shit, good shit.

Thank you Undertoad for the introduction to Rox. I offer this in exchange.

This certainly doesn't refer to our pretty little Lola Bunny (God I hope it doesn't anyway!!), but, she made me think of it...

Sundae 06-04-2011 02:48 PM

Jai Ho (Slumdog Millionaire theme).
No idea whether people know it well, but I adore this song. Even the Pussycat Dolls didn't ruin it for me. Then again I'm no musician.

I just prefer this version.

Yet another gem discovered via Pandora. In case you don't know... I heartily recommend Pandora, and it is well worth the $36/yr to upgrade to Pandora1.

The Pack A.D.
Biography
Following in the tradition of the Black Keys and the White Stripes, the Pack A.D. play a blend of rock and electric blues. The female duo is comprised of drummer Maya Miller and vocalist/guitarist Becky Black, both of whom left their previous Pixies-styled band to focus on bluesier music. After emerging in 2006 as one of Vancouver's more buzzworthy bands, the Pack A.D. signed with Mint Records in 2007 and released a debut album, Tintype, the following January. Funeral Mixtape, the duo's second offering, was issued eight months later. The group toured heavily in support of both releases and eventually returned to Vancouver, where the bandmembers holed themselves up at Hive Studios and began tinkering with new sounds. Although still a blues band at heart, the Pack A.D. found themselves drawn to punk and garage rock, both of which steered the sound of 2010's We Kill Computers in a slightly different direction. ~ Andrew Leahey, Rov
I was surprised to find that it's a woman singing. She(Becky Black) sounds a LOT like Shannon Houn (male) from Blind Melon.

This is the only song I've heard by them, but I will be seeking more out. I like the Black Keys and the White Stripes a lot ...and now I find that I am digging Becky Black... I also enjoy me some Tenacious D (Jack Black) ...seeing a theme here?

anyway.... enjoy!

jimhelm 06-09-2011 08:57 AM

Time for a little Madness

These songs have a real resonance for me. They were big when I was around 10 or 11 years old. The two that always stick in my mind as having a real air of pathos were Our House and Baggy Trousers:

Spexxvet 06-23-2011 08:02 AM

My friends and I prefered this

When we were 19 or 20. :sniff:

Undertoad 06-23-2011 09:56 AM

For a year in college it was all I could do not to enter a large room and shout One! Step! Beyond! and let the lovers love it and the haters hate it.

BigV 06-23-2011 10:13 AM

I saw them in concert (probably have the tshirt around here somewhere...). they opened for the Bangles who in turn opened for David Bowie at (the stadium previously known as) The Big A where (the baseball team formerly known as the California) Los Angeles Angels of Aneheim (or some such idiocy).

It was a great show!
