TA = Teaching Assistant

Sophomore = Second Year Student
In America, High Schools and Colleges refer to the students as -
9th grade / 1st year College - Freshmen
10th grade / 2nd year College - Sophomore
11th grade / 3rd year College - Junior
12th grade / 4th year College - Senior

Funny, I thought sophomore and the like were terms used in the English language worldwide. No?

You might be thinking "sophomoric": immature, etc.

We use 'Fresher' for first year of uni. 'First year' for first year of secondary (high) school and first year of college.

Sophomore isn't used as far as I know. Of course it's possible it's used in some of the southern red-bricks but I haven't come across it m'self.

(school is not the same throughout the English speaking world, either -In the UK, for example, one starts High School at 11 and stays there for 5-7 years -and wears a uniform ;) .)
