What are you, a Greek/Latin major? ;)

The only time I got 8 hours of sleep in one night while I was in school, was after working in studio the whole night before. Then the next night, I would sleep exactly 8 hours whether I wanted to or not.

Typically, I did not sleep very much during the week, but I'd sleep late either Saturday or Sunday.

Sleep sounds good about now

freshnesschronic 09-08-2007 09:14 AM

No I'm a Sports Management major! :D And I got 8 hours of sleep because my schedule allowed. I explained, class everyday at 11 meant going to sleep from 2-10am was routine.

Kitsune 09-25-2007 08:48 AM

What is it about getting too much sleep? It doesn't make much sense. I can go to bed at 11pm and wake at 5:30am and be wide awake and ready to face the world. This is far too early for my schedule, though, so I hit the pillow and drift off again for another two hours. 7:30am rolls around and, suddenly, getting up is like returning from the dead. I'll feel horribly groggy and awful. Even if I sleep straight through the night a full eight hours, I'll have the same difficult time. Sleeping in on weekends is the absolute worst. (sounds like misery, huh?) Five to six hours seems to be about right. So...

Less sleep = more awake? What the hell?

I thought it was a problem of waking at the wrong time in my sleep cycle, so I have been using one of those gradual wake alarm clocks. It doesn't seem to make a difference. Anyone have similar experiences?

Shawnee123 09-25-2007 08:54 AM

I know when I've had a good nights sleep (i.e. not drunken sleep, not nightmare-riddled sleep, not tossy-turny all nighty sleep) because I'm way more tired the next day and I feel like I was hit by a truck.

theotherguy 09-25-2007 05:02 PM

My wife wants one of those damned gradual awake clocks. That would just irritate me. Like waking up with the sun. I don't know why it makes me so frustrated.

I don't know that I ever get enough sleep.

freshnesschronic 09-25-2007 05:03 PM

I thought when you wake up in stage 4 or REM you're in deep sleep and that makes you feel the shittiest why you wake up. So Kitsune maybe you're waking up in REM after falling asleep again.

And Shawnee doesn't alcohol clearing out of your bloodstream count as being passed out, instead of sleep? I think I learned it takes 3 hours of sleep to eliminates two shots, so for people who get totally shitfaced they basically didn't get any sleep, they just were passed out all night. Right?

theotherguy 09-25-2007 05:16 PM

Are you saying that being passed out is not the same as sleeping? Are you sure you are in college?

I used to count that as quality sleep time when I was in school.

freshnesschronic 09-25-2007 05:21 PM

Most of my friends say passed out sleep sucks. I concur--it goes really fast and I feel like dying when waking up with a hangover. From my summer psychology class when we learned of sleep cycles my prof said being passed out is not sleeping. It's....being passed out? And like when one has cleared alcohol form their system they start the sleep system all over again.

So say you have four shots, so it takes 6 hours (+- depending on variety of things, genetics, the drinks, etc.) to clear your system. The rest of your sleep is now starting over from stage 1 so when you wake up at like 9 hours of total "sleep" you actually wake up in REM or stage 4 and you feel shitty. That's how I understand it.

theotherguy 09-25-2007 05:24 PM

[old man voice]What? Back in my day, we used to drink all night, pass out, then get up and go to afternoon classes. Come 5PM we'd start all over again. Sheesh! Kids these days.[/old man voice]

Tell me a story grandpa! I heard people didn't use condoms in the 60s either....no way! [semi serious question]

You've got part of that wrong but most it was right Fresh.

When you wake up from stage 4 sleep you will feel the shittiest because your mind will continue the sleep cycle until it is finished, or at least that is the theory.

REM is just stage 1 sleep so you should feel refreshed when waking from that.

I don't know about the passing out thing though. Whenever I drink and get a good buzz I will go to bed and wake up feeling great, but I don't know if that is considered passing out or not. The two times I have passed out the whole next day I felt like shit and slept during most of it so it could be true. I haven't heard anything about it before now though.

bluecuracao 09-25-2007 08:41 PM

Sometimes I sleep the best after I've had a few. No crazy dreams! (That I'm aware of, anyway.) The next day, I'll feel queasy, but not necessarily tired.
