I've never had a rule when it comes to drinking. One time, on a glorious summer day at a lake, my dad offered me a beer. Seemed like a good idea, so I accepted. We had just fired up the pit to roast a bunch of chickens for a big family BBQ. I was sleeping there at the cottage that night, so it wasn't like I had to be anywhere. A few minutes later, my cousin was actually chastising me for drinking before noon. Said I was setting a bad example in front of the kids. It was 11:00. It took me a minute to figure out what he was talking about. The thing is, when he drinks, he drinks. So he doesn't get started until later, or he won't be able to last until bed time. But I was just having one beer while I was grilling with my dad. I wasn't starting the process of getting drunk, like he figured I was.

Your cus is whacked.
We try to stick to the 12 noon rule, but we use 12 noon in Tristan da Cunha. And when on real vacation, i.e. beach house, Bahamas, etc, a Bloody Mary starts the day. |
In the UK, pubs open at 11 (or used to) so that's a reasonable hour ;). I tend not to want to stop drinking beer once I've started (I don't like the taste of anything else afterwards, so when I want another drink, it's beer again (and it has to be the same brand too -shit, I AM weird, it becomes so much clearer as i write it down)), so I generally tend not to start until the evening, but have never made a 'rule" because I suspect the things about rules are (a) they're made to be broken and (b) they tend to start to work both ways -if you have, say, an 8pm rule, you might start to feel you should be drinking if it's after 8, even if you don't actually fancy one? or feeling that once it's past they hour you can cram in as much as you want? maybe I protest too much.
My mom (who drank way way too much) had a "sun's over the yardarm" riule, which apparently meant about 5pm. Although I later learned that was just for driinks that actually looked like drinks. if it could fit in a glass of tomato juice or a cup of coffee, then any time was fair game  |

 I love the way you phrased that.

Truth is, if you have a drinking problem, you have a drinking problem. All the rules in the world won't help (although admittedly they might keep you within society's norms during working hours).
If you don't have a problem, starting pre-noon on occasion is juust that - an occasion. If you do have a problem, doesn't matter if you only drink after 21.00 at weekends - you are going to make up for what you missed elsewhere. So says the sage. And me. |
