Don't know the reason for the shape. Perhaps the factory removed as much metal as they could to facilitate bending the sheet metal, but they made sure to leave some in around the holes to give some extra strength, and they left a bigger opening directly above the center of the wheel to maximize the clearance in case the jeep bottoms out.

It is a standard shape though.

Well I'll be damned. That is just, I don't know, wrong, somehow. And funky (not in a good way).

I guess the flat-sided Jeep is a thing of the past then.

They were never flat sided, they always had a fender or vestiges thereof.
