Open wheel race car drivers always take a bad crash in their feet and legs. I've seen a bunch of X-rays of Formula One drivers, with more straps and screws than a hardware store. Of course by the time they get to Formula One, they've probably had several bad crashes while coming up through the ranks.

I read that this isn't a career ender: they expect a long recovery but do expect him to play again in about a year. This is good news.
