I bet you can place the date of PBR's resurgence and the date it was bought by an investment group to shortly after that film.

I have friends who are the farthest thing on earth from anything you would call 'hipster' and they drink PBR.

Natty Light is the cool beer with some of my younger friends.

In college it was Old Mud Light (Old Milwaukee Light.) That was about cheapness, as is the case with the aforementioned examples.

I reckon for hipsters it's all about the irony, as jim mentioned.
