Seems to me it's the same as any part of the required uniform. What happens to a cop who insists on fighting crime barefoot? He can find another profession.

Doesn't seem to matter. Cops are dropping unarmed or non-threatening people left and right with full video evidence - just another day at the office for local law enforcement. Most of the officers will never see the inside of a courtroom.

A side effect of all this is a noted reduction in the number of citizens talking to cops. Where that is most prevalent, a number of murders has recently increased. Baltimore is cited as a most obvious example.
