Proper. I have fake ones made of sheepskin, and it works, but they have weird plasticy bottoms.

My regular shoes if I'm too lazy to take them off.

Or barefoot.

Or, if it's chilly, some leather-soled wool socks. Comfy, plus they're OK to step in kitchen puddles in.

They look like they smell bad, but they really don't. At least not from 6 feet up.
