Most of us do not grasp or demand details (always demand numbers). Most of us only hear soundbytes that also proved cigarette improve health and that Saddam has WMDs to threaten America. In both cases, only a minority (the educated) knew otherwise. |
Why is suggesting that America join the 21st Century, and get on board with the standard of living that is experienced in virtually every other civilized nation of the world viewed as an impossible dream? What is, in people's minds, outweighing the preponderance of evidence that this is not only possible, but practically ubiquitous --for everyone else except America, the "best" country?

Except for its permanent underclass, the standard of living in the US is higher than virtually every other civilized nation.

That's true of virtually every civilized nation.
ie, things are great if you ignore the underclass. |

Not sure what qualifies as "virtually other" but... a (completely unscientific) average of different methodologies for determining our ranking (as determined by 5-10 minutes of Googling) has us at about 10.43rd place.
I haven't done any serious research into this. Is there a consensus among some group of experts that we should trust as having the right answer? |
You could always go with the most prolific meme posters on FB.

One of the reasons those other civilized nations are living large, is we've spent so much blood and treasure playing world cop so they could use their resources for better things. This has had a secondary effect of promoting the military industrial complex employing a lot of voters who wish to perpetuated it, along with the paranoids who feel we need it more than safe infrastructure.
