Along the lines of interesting city names, here in Virginia we have a town called Bumpass. And in Indiana, there is a county called Miami and in that county there is a town called Peru. :biggrinje

My favorite road name here is Manchaca.
Pronounced "man-shack." |
I went to Castle Heights Military Academy in Lebanon.
Tennessee... There is also Thibedeaux Louisiana, pronounced 'tibuhdoe'. |
There is a little harbour town in Newfoundland called Dildo.
The point at the opening of the harbour is called Dildo Head. |
And then of course, there are the oh so quaintly named towns in Central PA - right smack in the middle of Amish Country
Bird in Hand Intercourse Paradise BlueBall Virginville Makes you wonder what happens with no electricity *G* |
don't forget moscow, illinois :D or bagdad, az (that is the one near dry beaver creek )
|
My favorite that no one ever seems to think about: the city of Love Canal in New York.
|
In Missouri, we have a town called Versailles (pronounced, of course, vur sails, not vur sigh). Typical hick stuff, here.
|
In western MA it's pronounced Woo-stir, Wolf. :)
Oh, and in Philly, Juanita is june-e-ota. |
Love Canal was big news when I was in high school, so I do think about it from time to time. I seem to remember hearing that they changed the town name because the reputation lingered ... quick google reveals that people who moved into the lovely hamlet of "Black Creek Village" probably got a damn shock when someone let them in on where they'd just bought homes.
