I think the 6.1 figure is for the search and rescue vehicle LM wants to use this airframe for. They'll be competing for that contract as well. That contract makes a little more sense than the Marine Corp 1 contract. Anyway this contract will impact the local economy greatly and maybe bring home some of the technical folks who fled the area when IBM and Link started hemoraging.

I read the transcript of the announcement complete with the question and answer session. The reporters questioned the breakdown repeatedly and I came away with the impression the 1.7 billion is to get started on flying test mules.
The entire program would be 6.1 billion, 3.6 billion for the 23 aircraft and the rest for R&D to make sure President Jeb has the latest and greatest possible.
They definately said the Search and Rescue contract was entirely separate competition but some of the R&D on this contract could well benefit subsequent contracts especially if Lockeed wins that also. :confused:
