I'm watching a show on the Discovery Times channel about the streets in the United States named after Dr. King. In one segment, a group of citizens in Muncie, IN is trying to have a prominent street in town renamed after him. The interviewer is speaking with a business owner who would be affected by the name change.

BO: "If this name change goes through, I will close this place up."

Interviewer: "Isn't that a little headstrong?"

BO: "Now quit thinking Black."

Interviewer: "I AM Black."

Heh...

Thank you, Dr. King.

Whose bright idea was it to make King day a holiday where you're supposed to work for free? That's just wrong.

(yeah, I'm sore because King stole my birthday)

Until recently, Robert E. Lee and Stonewall Jackson were included in Lee Jackson King Day in Virginia. Apparently that caused a bit of a fuss, so they separated the holidays. Now Lee Jackson Day is the Friday before Martin Luther King Day, and state employees get a four day weekend.
I'm curious: who was causing the "fuss" and why? Honestly, I don't think that holidays should "count" regarding inclusion... the day is still celebrated...unless...you were being facetious.

The fuss was due to the fact that Virginia did not want an MLK day, so when they were forced to do it, they added in some confederate generals to distract from MLK himself.

A sad thing really. To borrow a line from Chris Rock:

"If you on MLK boulevard there's some violence going on!"

Everybody think about it. What is MLK blvd like in your town?

We don't have one in the City of Philadelphia.

However, I have seen at least two streets named after Dr. King that are fairly decent, in Baltimore and Chicago.

The church in the neighborhood I'm referring to has a fence with razorwire...

What city?
