I hate to tell you this, but I'm very, very happy.
I know that's not what you'd expect from me at all.
I'm not the kind to smile and bow out gracefully.
I always wanted to take it to the wall.

But I found somebody with a heart as big as Texas.
I found an angel with the golden wings.
She saw me down here in the dark somehow.
And everything is different now.

Yeah, I miss the old crowd sometimes,
And the wild, wild nights of running.
You know, a starving soul can't live like that for long.
You go around in circles that just keep getting smaller.
You wake up one morning and half your life is gone.

I got so tired of that; I got so lonely.
I dropped down and I called out to heaven,
"Send me someone to love."
Heaven shot back, "You get the love that you allow."
And everything is different now.

Oh, and it's sweet to know
The wisdom that living brings
Since I got a telegram from the God of Simple Things.

She said, "I don't care what you do for a living."
"I don't care what kind of car you drive."
"All I want to know right now is what do you believe in,
And what it means to you to be alive?"
"Will you stand here in this fire with me?"
"Are you ready for another life?"

I bit that bullet and took that vow,
And everything is different now.
Everything is different now.

Don Henley ~ From "Inside Job"

and

Hush now don't you cry
Wipe away the tear drops from your eye
You're lying safe in bed
It was all a bad dream
Spinning thru your head
Your mind tricked you to feel the pain
Of someone close to you leaving the game
Of life

So here it is, another chance
Wide awake, you face the day
Your dream is over...
Or has it just begun?

There's a place I like to hide
A door way that I run thru in the night
Relax child, you were there
But only didn't realize, and you were scared
It's a place where you will learn
To face your fears, retrace the years
And ride the whims of your mind
Commanding in another world
Suddenly, you hear and see
This magic new dimension

I -- will be watching over you
I -- am gonna help you see it through
I -- will protect you in the night
I -- am smiling next to you .. in Silent Lucidity

(Visualize your dreams
write them into permanent form
if you consist in your efforts
you will achieve
dream control

how is that, better?

dream control
dream control
help me)

If you open your mind for me
You won't rely on open eyes to see
The walls you built within
Come tumbling down, and a new world will begin
Living twice at once you learn
You're some from pain in the dream domain
A soul set free to fly
A round trip journey in your head
Master of illusion, can you realize
Your dream's alive, you can be the guide but...

I -- will be watching over you
I -- am gonna help you see it through
I -- will protect you in the night
I -- am smiling next to you ..

The Boy who wouldn't hoe corn

traditional tune
Dan Timinski has a great version with Union Station

Tell You a little story and it won't take long,
'Bout a lazy farmer who wouldn't hoe his corn.
The reason why I never could tell,
That young man was always well.

He planted his corn in the month of June.
By July it was up to his eyes.
Come September, came a big frost.
And all the young man's corn was lost.

His story, kith, had just begun.
Said: "Young man, have you hoed some corn?"
"Well I tried and I tried, and I tried in vain.
"But I don't believe I raised no grain."

He went down town to his neighbour's door.
Where he had often been before.
Sayin': "Pretty little miss, will you marry me?"
"Little miss what do you say?"

"Why do you come for me to wed?
"You, can't even make your own corn grain.
"Single I am, and will remain.
"A lazy man, I won't maintain."

He turned his back and walked away.
Sayin: "Little miss, you'll rue the day.
"You'll rue the day that you were born.
"For givin' me the devil 'cos I wouldn't hoe corn."

That is about the best worthless lazy ass loser song that I have seen ... that the song ends with him bitching about her reaction AND NOT DOING ANYTHING ABOUT IT is delightful.

xoxoxoBruce 01-27-2004 06:34 PM

Maybe not? Maybe he was going off to be the worlds best farmer and make her sorry she didn't take him while she could.
Or maybe he was going off to smoke pot and remain a failure. :D

This is one that I've been listening to a lot lately. I really identify with it right now, so that's why it's affecting me.

Hello darkness, my old friend,
I've come to talk with you again.
Because a vision softly creeping,
Left its seeds while I was sleeping.
And the vision that was planted in my brain
still remains
within the sounds of silence.

In restless dreams I walked alone
Narrow streets of cobblestone,
Beneath the halo of a street lamp,
I turned my collar to the cold and damp
When my eyes were stabbed by the flash of a neon light
That split the night
And touched the sound of silence.

And in the naked light I saw
Ten thousand people, maybe more.
People talking without speaking
People hearing without listening,
People writing songs that voices never share
And no one dared
Diturb the sound of silence.

"Fools," said I,"You do not know
Silence like a cancer grows.
Hear my words that I might teach you,
Take my arms that I might reach you."
But my words like silent raindrops fell,
And echoed
In the wells of silence

And the people bowed and prayed
To the neon god they made.
And the sign flashed out its warning,
In the words that it was forming.
And the signs said, The words of the prophets
are written on the subway walls
And tenement halls.
And whispered in the sounds of silence.

Murder by Numbers

Written by sting & andy summers

Once that you’ve decided on a killing
First you make a stone of your heart
And if you find that your hands are still willing
Then you can turn a murder into art

There really isn’t any need for bloodshed
You just do it with a little more finesse
If you can slip a tablet into someone’s coffee
Then it avoids an awful lot of mess

It’s murder by numbers, one, two, three
It’s as easy to learn as your abc
Murder by numbers, one, two, three
It’s as easy to learn as your abc

Now if you have a taste for this experience
And you’re flushed with your very first success
Then you must try a twosome or a threesome
And you’ll find your conscience bothers you much less

Because murder is like anything you take to
It’s a habit-forming need for more and more
You can bump off every member of your family
And anybody else you find a bore

Because it’s murder by numbers, one, two, three
It’s as easy to learn as your abc
Murder by numbers, one, two, three
It’s as easy to learn as your abc

Now you can join the ranks of the illustrious
In history’s great dark hall of fame
All our greatest killers were industrious
At least the ones that we all know by name

But you can reach the top of your profession
If you become the leader of the land
For murder is the sport of the elected
And you don’t need to lift a finger of your hand

Because it’s murder by numbers, one, two, three
It’s as easy to learn as your abc
Murder by numbers, one, two, three
It’s as easy to learn as your a, b, c, d, e

My pick for meaningful lyrics for tonight: What God Wants, God Gets by Roger Waters off of the Album Amused to Death and pretty much any song from that set.

Not an album to listen to while driving on a grey day down a two lane road, alone, for miles. It'll get you thinking, probably a little too deeply, about your life.

mrnoodle 02-17-2004 11:47 PM

Read this thread, hoped someone would resurrect it. :) My fav song about heroin addiction is Skid Row's Wasted Time. Kind of deep for a hair band song.

You and I together in our lives
Sacred ties would never fray
Then why can I let myself tell lies
And watch you die every day

I think back to the times
When dreams were what mattered
Tough talking youth naivete

You said you'd never let me down
But the horse stampedes and rages
In the name of desperation

Is it all just wasted time
Can you look at yourself
When you think of what
You left behind

Paranoid delusions they haunt you
Where's my friend I used to know
He's all alone
He's buried deep within a carcass
Searching for a soul

Can you feel me inside your heart
As it's bleeding
Why can't you believe you
Can be loved

I hear you scream in agony
And the horse stampedes and rages
In the name of desperation

Is it all just wasted time
Can you look at yourself
When you think of what
You left behind

(repeats some of the other lines)

The sun will rise again
The earth will turn to sand
Creation's colors seem to fade to grey
And you'll see the sickly hands of time
Will write your final rhyme
And end a memory

I never thought you'd let it get
this far, boy.

Here's a great one for the unrequited lovers amongst us...I think we know who they are...

She Loves the Jerk - John Hiatt

We've talked it to death, cryin' on the telephone.

Nights when he drinks at home, she has to whisper throught her tears.

"Johnny," she says, "you'd never do these things to me."

But I can never make her see he's wasted such precious years.

Well, "you married the wrong guy" is all I ever say.

CHORUS:

He's a no good so and so, but she'll never let him go

Though she knows it will never work, she loves the jerk.

She loves the jerk.

He was the guy always out on the make.

I guess he had what it takes to turn the heads of pretty girls.

She thought he would change; the worst of us will settle down.

But he couldn't stay out of town, not even with this precious pearl

Now she lives with the lies and the bumps and the bruises.

REPEAT CHORUS

Well, I hang up the phone and I pretend she's in my arms.

What I wouldn't give for just one-tenth of what she gives Mister Charming.

REPEAT CHORUS

He's a no good so and so, but she'll never let him go.

Though she knows it will never work, she loves the jerk

Not to worry Bruce. You're a cool dude.

The part I like about that song is that you think it's all about serial killer thinking - until you get to the last verse. Then you realize it's really a political statement.

lumberjim 02-19-2004 03:47 PM

hey, what do you think this one's about?...I can't tell if it's literal or allegorical......

Blues Traveler Regarding Steven

Well I've guessed your name and I'm sure you know mine
I'd like to discuss our mutual friend
I can't help but feel that I left him behind
Does he still stay with you or did his pain ever end

I guess
I don't deserve to know
If he ever let go
I guess
I don't really need to see
If he wound up with you or did he ever break free

When we were both young, you took us in
And taught us to play survival games
He'd lost so much that you let him win
But I had a home so it just wasn't the same

I had the strength
To look you in the eye
And say goodbye
I was lucky
And I didn't have to play
Does he still stay with you or did he get away

I used what I had and I escaped
I smelled something good and I followed it's track
But all he could smell was the world that you shaped
It took all my strength and I just couldn't look back

I remember him
Calling after me
I keep that memory
The last thing he screamed aloud
Was "Hey don't you leave me alone!"
Yeah he might live with you but he called me his home

Yeah I guessed your name
And someday so will he
Cause one of these ides he's gonna break free
Cause one of these ides he's gonna break free
Cause one of these ides he's gonna break

I'd have to go with allegory - due to the use (twice) of the phrase "I've guessed your name". In addition, knowing the name confers the power to break free.

However, it could be a description of a real story, but presented in a metaphorical fashion.

The problem is the writer doesn't give us enough to chew on to make the distinction.

Yeah,

jinx guesses it's drugs or alcohol.......but the part about taking him in, letting him win......i dunno

Jerusalem

Steve Earle
Jerusalem

I woke up this mornin' and none of the news was good
And death machines were rumblin' 'cross the ground where Jesus stood
And the man on my TV told me that it had always been that way
And there was nothin' anyone could do or say

And I almost listened to him
Yeah, I almost lost my mind
Then I regained my senses again
And looked into my heart to find

That I believe that one fine day all the children of Abraham
Will lay down their swords forever in Jerusalem

Well maybe I'm only dreamin' and maybe I'm just a fool
But I don't remember learnin' how to hate in Sunday school
But somewhere along the way I strayed and I never looked back again
But I still find some comfort now and then

Then the storm comes rumblin' in
And I can't lay me down
And the drums are drummin' again
And I can't stand the sound

But I believe there'll come a day when the lion and the lamb
Will lie down in peace together in Jerusalem

And there'll be no barricades then
There'll be no wire or walls
And we can wash all this blood from our hands
And all this hatred from our souls

And I believe that on that day all the children of Abraham
Will lay down their swords forever in Jerusalem

glatt 04-13-2004 11:34 AM

Ticking away the moments that make up a dull day, you fritter and waste the hours in an off-hand way. Kicking around on a piece of ground in your home town, waiting for someone or something to show you the way.

Tired of lying in the sunshine, staying home to watch the rain.
You are young, and life is long, and there is time to kill today.

And then the one day you find, ten years have got behind you.
No one told you when to run, you missed the starting gun.
And you run and you run to catch up with the sun, but it's sinking
and racing around to come up behind you again.
The sun is the same in the relative way, but you're older,
shorter of breath, and one day closer to death.

Every year is getting shorter. Never seem to find the time.
Plans that either come to naught or half a page of scribbled lines.

Hanging on in quiet desparation is the English way.

The time is gone. The song is over. Thought I'd something more to say...

lumberjim 04-13-2004 11:41 AM

must be glatt's birthday.

you feelin old?

ladysycamore 04-13-2004 12:04 PM

Quote:

"The sun is the same in the relative way, but you're older,

Whoa..that just hit me real hard. :(

But, it's so true.

glatt 04-13-2004 03:51 PM

When I was a teenager, that song always made me feel anxious. Like I was missing out, while everyone else was doing cool stuff. The line about missing the starting gun really hit home back then. But that's because I would always crank it when I was hanging out alone in my room, doing nothing. I actually was missing out when I was listening to it.

Now that I'm in my late 30s (and yes, lumberjim, my 37th birthday was on friday - good guess) it's changed its meaning. I realize I had all the time in the world when I was young. It was a blessing and a curse at the same time. Now, if I never seem to find the time to do anything for me, it's because I have a great wife and couple of wonderful little kids. They take all my time, and I freely give it to them.

So, life's a trade-off. For everything you choose, you are leaving something that you could have had. No surprise there.

This song is very powerful, and I like it for that reason. But it's also an evil song. It sows anxiety, when you should be feeling content and rejoicing in your life, simple as it may be.

lumberjim 04-13-2004 05:52 PM

happy birthday, you old bastard.

evil song?

I think it simply ( if you are paying attention to the lyrics) makes you take a look at the big picture. What's so evil about that? more of a cautionary tale

godwulf 04-16-2004 10:23 AM

I don't care about your karma
I don't care about what's hip
No space cadet's gonna tell me what to do

I won't swim in your Jacuzzi
You can't make me settle down
I'd rather kick and jump and bite and scratch
And scream until I'm blue

I may as well be hyper
As long as I'm still around
'Cause I'll have lots of time to be laid back
When I'm six feet under ground

I'll be mellow when I'm dead (I'll be mellow when I'm dead)
I'll be mellow when I'm dead (I'll be mellow when I'm dead)
I'll be mellow when I'm dead (I'll be mellow when I'm dead)

I'll be mellow when I'm dead (I'll be mellow when I'm dead)
I'll be mellow when I'm dead (I'll be mellow when I'm dead)
I'll be mellow when I'm dead (I'll be mellow when I'm dead)

When are you
Cosmic cowboys
Gonna get it through your head

I'll be mellow when I'm dead (I'll be mellow when I'm dead)
I'll be mellow when I'm dead (I'll be mellow when I'm dead)
I'll be mellow when I'm dead (I'll be mellow when I'm dead)

I can't stand the smell of incense
I don't really like to jog
No Joni Mitchell eight-tracks in my car (ooh)

I hate anything organic
Even health food makes me sick
You won't catch me sipping Perrier
Down in some sushi bar

I tell you, now's the time to go for
All the gusto you can grab
You'll have plenty of time to be low key
When you're laid out on the slab

I'll be mellow when I'm dead (I'll be mellow when I'm dead)
I'll be mellow when I'm dead (I'll be mellow when I'm dead)
I'll be mellow when I'm dead (I'll be mellow when I'm dead)

I don't want no part of that vegetarian scene
I won't buy me a pair of designer jeans
No redwood hot tub to my name

I got all that I want
And if it's all the same to you
I don't need a course in self-awareness
To find out who I am

And I'd rather have a
Big Mac or a Jumbo Jack
Than all the bean sprouts in Japan

So don't ask me what I'm into
I don't need to prove I'm cool
I'll break your arm
If you ask me what's my sign

I won't tell you where my head's at
I don't need to see no shrink
Psychosis may be in this year
But I'm really not that kind

And I'm in no hurry to be casual
In fact I think I'll wait
Until I'm pushing up the daisies
(Like, wow, man, can you relate)

I'll be mellow when I'm dead (I'll be mellow when I'm dead)
I'll be mellow when I'm dead (I'll be mellow when I'm dead)
I'll be mellow when I'm dead (I'll be mellow when I'm dead)

I'll be mellow when I'm dead (I'll be mellow when I'm dead)
I'll be mellow when I'm dead (I'll be mellow when I'm dead)
I'll be mellow when I'm dead (I'll be mellow when I'm dead)

I'll be mellow when I'm dead (I'll be mellow when I'm dead)
I'll be mellow when I'm dead (I'll be mellow when I'm dead)
I'll be mellow when I'm dead (I'll be mellow when I'm dead)

I'll be mellow when I'm dead (I'll be mellow when I'm dead)
I'll be mellow when I'm dead (I'll be mellow when I'm dead)
I'll be mellow when I'm dead (I'll be mellow when I'm dead)

Seems like a dream now, it was so long ago
The moon burned so bright and the time went so slow
And I swore that I loved her and gave her a ring
The bluebird was high on the wing

Whatever happened to Saturday night
Finding a sweetheart and holding her tight?
She said,"Tell me, oh, tell me, was I all right?"
Whatever happened to Saturday night?

The years brought the railroad
It ran by my door
Now there's boards on the windows
And dust on the floor
And she passes the time at another man's side
And I pass the time with my pride

What a tangled web we weave
Go 'round with circumstance
Someone show me how to tell the dancer
From the dance

What ever happened
To Saturday night?
Choosin' a friend and loosin' a fight
She said,"Tell me, oh, tell me, are you alright?"
Whatever happened to Saturday night?
Whatever happened to Saturday night?

THE GRASS IS ALWAYS GREENER...

Dave Matthews Band

Big Eyed Fish

Look at this big - eyed fish swimming in the sea oh
How it dreams to be a bird swoop and diving through the breeze
So one day caught a big old wave up on to the beach
Now he’s dead you see beneath the sea is where a fish should be

But oh God
Under the weight of life
Things seem brighter on the other side

You see this crazy man decided not to breathe
He turned red and blue - purple, colorful indeed
No matter how his friends begged and pleaded the man would not concede
And now he’s dead you see the silly man should know you got to breathe

But oh God
Under the weight of life
Things seem brighter on the other side

Oh God
Under the weight of life
Things seem so much better on the other side

No way, no way
No way out of here

You see the little monkey sitting up in his monkey tree
One day decided to climb down and run off to the city
But look at him now lost tired living in the street
As good as dead you see what a monkey does - stay up your tree

But oh God
Under the weight of life
Things seem brighter on the other side

Oh God
Under the weight of life
Things seem so much better on the other side

No way, no way, no way
No way out of here

Rain in my dreams

Fall away

Crimson Ghost 04-25-2004 04:13 AM

One - Metallica

I can't remember anything
Can't tell if this is true or dream
Deep down inside I feel the scream
This terrible silence stops me

Now that the war is through with me
I'm waking up, I cannot see
That there's not much left of me
Nothing is real but pain now

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please, God, wake me

Back in the womb it's much too real
In pumps life that I must feel
But can't look forward to reveal
Look to the time when I live

Fed through the tube that sticks in me
Just like a wartime novelty
Tied to machines that make me be
Cut this life off from me

Hold my breath as I wish for death
Oh please, God, wake me

Now the world is gone, I'm just one
Oh God, help me
Hold my breath as I pray for death
Oh please, God, kill me

Darkness, imprisoning me
All that I see
Absolute horror
I cannot live
I cannot die
Trapped in myself
Body my holding cell

Landmine has taken my sight
Taken my speech
Taken my hearing
Taken my arms
Taken my legs
Taken my soul
Left me with life in hell

This song has always hit me hard. On Sundays, my wife and I volunteer at the Vets Home, taking guys to and from church services. There is a young infantryman there, my age, in fact, that stepped on a mine and lost his arms, legs, face. His mother is there every day, bathing him, talking to him. I've driven her home on the occasions that his father couldn't get there (he's a Captain in the Air Force). I said to my wife, after she heard this song, "One wrong step, and it could have been me or anyone in the service."

I'll shut up now that i've depressed everyone......

wolf 04-26-2004 09:55 AM

Talking about things like this helps you to be able to keep doing them.

Is "One" the song that had the "When Johnny Got His Gun" video?

Crimson Ghost 05-02-2004 12:11 AM

Yup, that it is, wolf. If you read the book, it is quite the look inside the thoughts of the young trooper in this condition. The video, of course, can't go into all the different things that the book went into. However, the video is certainly not a happy "everything will be fine" thing. A DVD is out called "Two Of One". If you liked the book, get the DVD. I'm not sure if the DVD has all three videos. YES! Three. The two from "Two Of One", and a video that used to be on MTV. That one starts with Jason Robards and the boy (name?) saying -

"What is Democracy?"

"It has something to do with young men killing each other, I belive."

"When it comes time, would you want me to go?"

"For Democracy, any man would give his only begotton son."

The movie is one that you don't want to see when you're depressed. But a classic, anyway.

wolf 05-02-2004 10:27 AM

I read the book when I was in high school, saw the movie in college, so I got the cultural context when "And Justice For All" was released.

Common People by Pulp
I heard this song sung in his unpreposessing style ....saw him (Jarvis) stood there on stage with his old brown chords and an even more ancient velvet jacket....a sheffield lad who doesnt look like much but somehow holds your attention as soon as he sidles onto the stage......The guy with the electric violin pretty much rocks too, but it all comes together because the lyrics are just so good.

:band:
She came from Greece, she had a thirst for knowledge

She studied sculpture at Saint Martin's College

That's where I caught her eye.

She told me that her Dad was loaded

I said "In that case I'll have a rum and coca-cola"

She said "fine"
And in thirty seconds time she said,

"I want to live like common people

I want to do whatever common people do,

I want to sleep with common people

I want to sleep with common people like you"

Well what else could I do?

I said "I'll see what I can do"

I took her to a supermarket

I don't know why

But I had to start it somewhere

So it started there.

I said "Pretend you've got no money"

But she just laughed

And said "oh you're so funny".

I said "yeah?

Well I can't see anyone else smiling in here".

Are you sure you want to live like common people

You want to see whatever common people see

You want to sleep with common people,

You want to sleep with common people like me.

But she didn't understand,

She just smiled and held my hand.

Rent a flat above a shop,

Cut your hair and get a job.

Smoke some fags and play some pool,

Pretend you never went to school.

But still you'll never get it right

'cos when you're laid in bed at night

Watching roaches climb the wall

If you called your Dad he could stop it all.

You'll never live like common people

You'll never do whatever common people do

You'll never fail like common people

You'll never watch your life slide out of view,

And dance and drink and screw

Because there's nothing else to do.

Sing along with the common people,

Sing along and it might just get you thru'

Laugh along with the common people

Laugh along even though they're laughing at you

And the stupid things that you do.

Because you think that poor is cool.

Like a dog lying in a corner,

They will bite you and never warn you

Look out, they'll tear your insides out

'cos everybody hates a tourist

Especially one who thinks

It's all such a laugh

Yeah!

And the chip stains' grease

Will come out in the bath

You will never understand

How it feels to live your life

With no meaning or control

And with nowhere left to go

You are amazed that they exist

And they burn so bright

Whilst you can only wonder why

Rent a flat above a shop

Cut your hair and get a job

Smoke some fags and play some pool

Pretend you never went to school

But still you'll never get it right

'cause when you're laid in bed at night

Watching roaches climb the wall

If you called your dad he could stop it all

Yeah!

You'll never live like common people

You'll never do whatever common people do

You'll never fail like common people

You'll never watch your life slide out of view

And then dance and drink and screw

Because there's nothing else to do

I want to live with common people like you.....

America
your head’s too big
because America
your belly’s too big
and I love you
I just wish you'd stay where you is
in America
the land of the Free, they said
and of opportunity
in a Just
and a Truthful way
but where the President is never black
or female or gay
and until that day
you’ve got nothing to say to me
to help me believe
in America
it brought you the hamburger
well America
you know where
you can shove your hamburger
and don’t you wonder
why in Estonia
they say "hey you,
you big fat pig"
"you fat pig"
"you fat pig"
Steely-blue eyes
with no love in them
scan the world
and a humorless smile
with no warmth within
greets the world
and I
I have got nothing
to offer you
just this heart deep and true
which you say you don’t need
see with your eyes
touch with your hands
please
hear through your ears
know in your soul
please
for haven’t you me with you now?
and I love you
I love you
I love you
I love you
I love you
I love you

Words are flowing out like endless rain into a paper cup
They slither wildly as they slip away across the universe
Pools of sorrow, waves of joy are drifting through my open mind
Possessing and caressing me
Jai Guru Deva OM

Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Images of broken light which dance before me like a million eyes
They call me on and on across the universe
Thoughts meander like a restless wind inside a letter box
They tumble blindly as they make their way across the universe
Jai Guru Deva OM

Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Sounds of laughter shades of live are ringing through my open ears
Inciting and inviting me
Limitless undying love which shines around me like a million suns
It calls me on and on
Across the universe
Jai Guru Deva OM

Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world
Nothing's gonna change my world

Original Lyrics and Music by Danny Dill and Marijohn Wilkin
performed by the dave matthews band

Ten years ago, on a cold, dark night
Someone was killed beneath the town hall light
There were few at the scene
But they all agreed
That the slayer who ran
Looked a lot like me

She walks these hills in a Long Black Veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me

The judge said, "Son, what is your alibi?
If you were somewhere else,
Then you won't have to die."
Well, I said not a word
Though it meant my life
For I'd been in the arms
Of my best friend's wife

Oh, she walks these hills in a Long Black Veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me

Oh now, the scaffold was high
Eternity is near
She stood in the crowd
And shed not a tear

Oh, sometimes at night
When the cold winds blow
In a Long Black Veil
She stands over my bones

She walks these hills in a Long Black Veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me

She walks these hills in a Long Black Veil
She visits my grave when the night winds wail
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me
Nobody knows, nobody sees, nobody knows but me

Nobody knows but me...

Nobody knows...
Nobody knows...
Nobody knows... but me.

Rich Hoax - Album "Cold Fact" Sixto Rodriguez

The moon is hanging in a purple sky
Baby's sleeping while his mother sighs
Talking about the rich folks
The rich folks have the same jokes
But they park in basic places

The priest is preaching from a shallow grave
Counts his money, then he paints you saved
Talking `bout the young folks
Young folks share the same jokes
But they meet in older places

So don't tell me about your success
Nor your recipes for my happiness
Smoke in bed, I never could digest
Those illusions you claim to have going

The sun is shining as it always done
Coffin dust is the fate of everyone
Talking about the rich folks
The poor create the rich hoax
And only late breast fed fools believe it

"Looks Like Rain"
John Perry Barlow

I woke today...
And felt your side of bed
The covers were still warm where you'd been layin'.
You were gone...
My heart was filled with dread.
You might not be sleepin' here again

It's alright, 'cause I love you.
And that's not gonna change.
Run me round, make me hurt again and again.
But I'll still sing you love songs
Written in the letters of your name.
And brave the storm to come,
For it surely looks like rain.

Did you ever waken to the sound
Of street cats makin' love
And guess from their cries
You were listenin' to a fight?
Well, you know...
Hate's just the last thing they're thinkin' of.
They're only trying to make it through the night.

I only want to hold you.
I don't want to tie you down.
Or fence you in the lines
I might have drawn.
It's just that I've gotten used to
Havin' you around.
My landscape would be empty
If you were gone.

Rain, rain, go away...

Death Or Glory - Motorhead - "BASTARDS"

I saw the millions, the naked and the dead
I saw the city streets running bloody red
I saw a thousand bombers circle in the sky
I saw the firestorm fifty stores high

I saw a hundred thousand scream and burn
I saw the armored wheels grind and turn
Universal soldier, doomed to live to tell
Fight and die forever, burn in bloody hell

Death or Glory, Death or Glory
March forever in the sound and fury
Death or Glory, Death or Glory
Blood and iron it's the same old story

I held the Iron Cross, first class with the swords
I marched with Hitler down the bloody road to war
I was at Jutland loding 'till the gun was hot,
Killed at Trafalgar without firing a shot

I was at Moscow, burning in my tank
I was at Shiloh, marching in the ranks
I was a Sturmbannfuhrer fighting in Berlin
I was a Russian Hero dying for Stalin

Death or glory, Death or glory
March forever in the sound and fury
Death or glory, Death or glory
Blood and iron it's the same old story

I swung a saber and I was a young Hussar
I was a Cossack, fighting for the Czar
I was a Viking, Berserker from the North
A Roman Gladiator murdered just for sport

I was with Bonaparte I died at Waterloo
I was a Frankish Knight, a Polish Jew
I was a Spartan in the Trojan Wars
I was a warrior for Crazy Horse

Death or Glory, Death or Glory
March forever in the sound and fury
Death or Glory, Death or Glory
The Loner Survivor but no comfort for me
Death or Glory, Death or Glory
Executioner, Judge and Jury
Death or Glory, Death or Glory
Blood and iron it's the same old story
Auf Stehen!!!

The Message by Dr. Dre

Many people say that rap has no meaning except for unnecessary references to violence, drugs, money and dehumanzing woman. In some senses its true, but cases like these lyrics, people may want to think again when coming to conclusions about rap:

[Dr. Dre]
This one is for my brother, Tyree, R.I.P.
.. {*Mary J. Blige sings in the background*} ..
A message to God
.. {*Mary J. Blige sings in the background*} ..

[Dr. Dre]
Since you finishin em early, what posessed you to start him?
We made a vow - later we'll regret til death do us part
Lord, I thought we was made for each other
You shouldn't connect those, made to be taken away from each other
Now what I'm supposed to do? I'm only half the man that I was
I'll never last, cause my better half is up there with you
You knew what you was doin when you made us; so with all due respect
you coulda forgave him, you didn't have to take him
He can take the game with him, cause he defines the word
The one who puts the G in it, who you think put me in it?
I'm feelin like my whole world is blinded - wonderin why
Cryin, pourin out my heart, pourin out liquor behind it
We fought like brothers, somethin we never should do
We coulda used time spent arguin tellin the truth
He had talent too - I had plans on watchin him grow
Don't know what hurts more - seein him leave, or watchin him go

[Mary J. Blige]
Listen listen listen.. (listen) whoahh (listen)
Listen listen listen.. (better listen) whoahh-oahhh-oahhh
Listen listen listen.. {*harmonizing*}
Listen.. mmm-mmm-mmm

[Rell] + {Mary}
If you wanna know why.. {why I live my life}
The way that I do.. {cause I got to get this money}
So don't worry about me.. {cause I know my way around}
I'm just hustlin everyday, runnin this race, makin this paper

[Dr. Dre]
Youse a soldier, you're probably packin heat up there
Met up with homies from the street, and got deep up there
If you only knew the way I felt before they ruined the crew
I thought I learned from Eazy, now I'm goin through it with you
We lost a thug, a son, and a father
I spoke to your son, the other day, and told him Uncle Dre got him
The Lord must be accidentally pulling your file
cause I'm still paging you, 911, straight in denial
Prayin you get it, but no man can choose the card he was dealt
You either quit, or you gon' play it like you get it
I done been through all emotions, from in shock, to keepin a poker face
to straight breakin down and showin all emotions
I'm anxious to believe in real G's don't cry
If that's the truth, then I'm realizin I ain't no gangsta
It's just not me, but you know I'ma always ride wit you
I miss you, sometimes I wish I just died wit you

[Mary J. Blige]
Listen listen listen.. (listen) whoahh (listen)
Listen listen listen.. whoahh-oahhh-oahhh
Listen listen listen.. {*harmonizing*}
Listen.. eyy-eyy-eyy-yeah-yeahh

[Rell] + {Mary}
If you wanna know why.. {why I live my life}
The way that I do.. {cause I got to get this money}
So don't worry about me.. {don't worry, don't worry worry}
I'm just hustlin everyday, runnin this race, makin this paper

[Mary J. Blige]
yeah, yeah, ahhh-oooh-oahahahhhhh.. listen..
mmmmmmmmmhmhmhmmmmmm..
if you don't know why I.. you gotta listen up right now
lis-ten, lis-ten, lis-ten, lis-ten..
oooooooooh... oahahoooohhh ooooha ohhhhh
lis-ten, lis-ten
ahhhowooooo yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah, yeah yeah yeah
yeah-ehh-yeah, yeah-ooeooooh
yahhooooohahhooooh listen
lis-ten, children lis-ten
I'm tryin to tell you somethin good
Don't get caught up in the hood
Yeahhh-hah, yeahhh-hah, aooooooh

Devil Song

When the devil comes blowing through your door
You'll know there's trouble, and he's coming back for more
You better keep what is precious hidden under the floor
Or you better treat it so good it will never want for more

But looking back in retrospect
Did you ever really get what you'd expect?
Trying to rectify
Got lost a little further
You've been trying to justify
Find out how and where it came

Devil was your angel, but it's not no more
The devil was your angel, when you weren't sure

Do I tempt trouble to break through all these doors
Just to put a face to the voice which always home?
To fight for what is precious, to know what's under the floor
If I could treat it so good, I swear I'd never want for more

But when I found my peace
There was still mistakes
However painfully awaring every step I take
Trying to rectify
Got lost a little further
Well, I've been trying to justify
Find out how and where it came

The devil was my angel, now I'm just not sure.
To travel as my angel there's always my whore

Gonna take you back down
I won't feel no shame
Till my dreams
Are my own again
Gonna take you right down, and I'll take the blame
Till my dreams are my own again

Here I am again

Devil was my angel, now I'm just not sure
To travel as my angel there's always my whore
Maybe you're an angel, tried to remember you're an angel
Remember you're an angel, if you're not sure

Dispatch: "General"

There was a decorated General with a heart of gold
That likened him to all the stories he told
Of past battles won and lost
And legends of old
A seasoned veteran in his own time.
On the battlefield he gained respectful fame
With many medals of bravery and stripes to his name
He grew a beard as soon as he could
To cover the scars on his face
And always urged his men on

But on the eve of great battle with the infantry in dream
The old general tossed in his sleep
And wrestled with its meaning
He awoke from the night to tell what he had seen
And walked slowly out of his tent.

All the men held tall with their chests in the air
With a courage in their blood
And a fire in their stare
It was a grey morning and they all wondered how they would fare
'Til the old general told them to go home.

He said,
"I have seen the others
And I have discovered
that this fight is not worth fighting
And I've seen their mothers
And I will no other
to follow me where I'm going.
So take a shower and shine your shoes
You've got no time to lose
You are young men you must be living.
Take a shower and shine your shoes
You've got no time to lose
You are young men you must be living.
Go now you are forgiven."

Yeah...

But the men stood fast with their guns on their shoulders
Not knowing what to do with the contradicting orders
The General said he would do his own duty
But he would extend it no further
The men could go as they pleased
But not a man moved
their eyes gazed straight ahead
'Til one by one they stepped back and not a word was said
The old General was left with his own words
Echoing in his head
He then prepared to fight

He said,
"I have seen the others
And I have discovered
that this fight is not worth fighting
No, and I've seen their mothers
And I will no other to follow me where I'm going
So take a shower and shine your shoes
You've got no time to lose
You are young men you must be living.
Take a shower and shine your shoes
You've got no time to lose
You are young men you must be living.
Go now you are forgiven."

Yeah...

Go now you are forgiven
Go now you are forgiven
Go now you are forgiven
Go

Lynard Skynard: "Simple Man"

Mama told me, when I was young
Come sit beside me, my only son
And listen closely, to what I say.
And if you do this
It will help you some sunny day.

Ohh take your time... Don't live too fast,
Troubles will come, and they will pass.
Go find a woman and you'll find love,
And don't forget son,
There is someone up above.

(Chorus)
And be a simple kind of man.
Oh be somethin you'll love and understand.
Baby be a simple kind of man.
Won't you do this for me son,
If you can?

Forget your lust for the rich man's gold
All that you need is in your soul,
And you can do this if you try.
All that I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.

(Chorus)

Boy, don't you worry... you'll find yourself.
Follow your heart and nothing else.
And you can do this if you try.
All I want for you my son,
Is to be satisfied.

In france a skinny man
Died of a big disease with a little name.
By chance his girlfriend came across a needle
And soon she did the same.
At home there are seventeen-year-old boys
And their idea of fun
Is being in a gang called the disciples
High on crack, totin’ a machine gun.

Time, time

Hurricane Annie ripped the ceiling of a church
And killed everyone inside.
Turn on the telly and every other story
Is tellin’ you somebody died.
Sister killed her baby cuz she couldn't afford to feed it
And we’re sending people to the moon.
In September my cousin tried reefer for the very first time
Now he’s doing horse, it’s June.

Times, times

It’s silly, no?
When a rocket ship explodes
And everybody still wants to fly?
Some say a man ain’t happy
Unless a man truly dies.
Oh why?
Oh why?

Baby makes a speech, star wars fly
Neighbors just shine it on.
But if a night falls and a bomb falls
Will anybody see the dawn?
Time, times

It’s silly, no?
When a rocket ship explodes
And everybody still wants to fly?
Some say a man ain’t happy, truly
Until a man truly dies.
Oh why, oh why?

Don't often open up this floor
Since I handed in my gun
What all these keys are for
Now my tour of duty's done
You got to know the switches
Now you got your turn
Watch and learn, junior
Watch and learn

Now you will get your
Trouble spots
Here's one from
Down voodoo way
Bragged he had me
By the you-know-whats
Very funny, you don't say
The big enchilada
Stealing elections
Had to go down there
Trash collection
Got his cojones
On my desk in there
Made into a souvenir
Set of cufflinks, nice pair
The rest of him's
Someplace up here
Sometimes you got to
Put a shoulder to the door
Not so fast, junior
Listen to your pa
Here, son
I'm handing over to you
Don't crash the ambulance
Whatever you do

What we have here's
A dung hole place
Thought it was fly shit
On the map
Fat bastard, ugly face
And the personal crap
You can't move the barriers
You can't mess with oil and gas
Had to go down there
Stick a couple
Aircraft carriers
In his ass
Fancy dress
Medals chest
It's all in here
For all the gigs
Gas mask
Bullet-proof vest
All the usual rigs
There'll be things they missed
They didn't mention
You've even
Got a whistle in there
For attracting attention

Well, I think you're gonna
Be okay, son
You've had the tour, I guess
These two buttons
By the way
This one I hope
You never press
Some holy fool, just watch
Who's not like you or me
That one's the whole
Shooting match
Right there
It's the whole shitaree
We don't forget
Who put us here, jack
That's page one
We talk soft
But carry a big stick
And pack the biggest gun
We don't like accidents
Major or minor
You don't want yourself
An incident
Don't ever invade china

Here, son
I'm handing over to you
Don't crash the ambulance
Here, son
I'm handing over to you
Don't crash the ambulance
Whatever you do

Brad Paisley
He Didn't Have To Be
Written by - Brad Paisley & Kelley Lovelace
From - Who Needs Pictures

When a single mom goes out on a date with somebody new
It always winds up feeling more like a job interview
My momma used to wonder if she'd ever meet someone
Who wouldn't find out about me and then turn around and run

I met the man I call my dad when I was five years old
He took my mom out to a movie and for once I got to go
A few months later I remember lying there in bed
I overheard him pop the question and prayed that she'd say yes

And then all of a sudden
Oh, it seemed so strange to me
How we went from something's missing
To a family
Lookin' back all I can say
About all the things he did for me
Is I hope I'm at least half the dad
That he didn't have to be

I met the girl that's now my wife about three years ago
We had the perfect marriage but we wanted somethin' more
Now here I stand surrounded by our family and friends
Crowded 'round the nursery window as they bring the baby in

And now all of a sudden
It seemed so strange to me
How we've gone from something's missing
To a family
Lookin' through the glass I think about the man
That's standin' next to me
And I hope I'm at least half the dad
That he didn't have to be

Lookin' back all I can say
About all the things he did for me
Is I hope I'm at least half the dad
That he didn't have to be

Yeah, I hope I'm at least half the dad
That he didn't have to be
Because he didn't have to be
You know he didn't have to be

These lyrics resonate powerfully with me. I know the pleasure and relief the singer feels as a child, and I know the aching desire to repay the debt as a man. I can never repay him, but I'll pay it forward to his children's children.

I promise.

John Elefante \ Pass The Flame

Three a.m. - a baby boy; a new life began
I held him in my arms and knew one day he'd be a man
And soon I'd have to tell him that
this world is not our home
We must give our lives to Jesus; we are not our own

But for now just let me hold you, a little while
Let me adore you while you sleep
Thank You, Lord, for such an angel
Make him Yours to keep
And then I whispered in his ear
There is something you must hear

CHORUS:
Any way the wind blows
Don't you think that God knows
We must pass the flame
We must pass the flame
We are the light in a darkened world
We are the fire on the arrow
We must pass the flame
We must pass the flame

She was a portrait of innocence I
took her by the hand
For better or for worse we vowed
that with Jesus we'd stand
We would instill upon our children
that this world is not our home
We would tell them that our treasure
is the promise that we own

But for now just let me hold you a little while
Let me adore you while you sleep
Thank You, Lord, for such an angel
Make them Yours to keep
So let me whisper in your ear
There is something you must hear

CHORUS

And Lord, help us teach Your children well
And turn embers in to fire
Make Your love their soul desire

The doctors came into the room; the
news was not too good
I said, "Daddy, if I could take your
place, you know that I would."
He said, "Son, please don't worry go
and be there for your wife
You know we'll be together in an everlasting life."

Then I said, "Dad, I want to hold you a little while
Let me adore you while you sleep."
Thank You, Lord, for such an angel
Take him home to keep
And then he whispered in my ear
There is something you must hear

CHORUS(x2)

Cat's in the Cradle Lyrics
By Harry Chapin

My child arrived just the other day,
He came to the world in the usual way.
But there were planes to catch, and bills to pay.
He learned to walk while I was away.
And he was talking 'fore I knew it, and as he grew,
He'd say, "I'm gonna be like you, dad.
You know I'm gonna be like you."

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then.
You know we'll have a good time then."

My son turned ten just the other day.
He said, "Thanks for the ball, dad, come on let's play.
Can you teach me to throw?" I said, "Not today,
I got a lot to do." He said, "That's ok."
And he walked away, but his smile never dimmed,
Said, "I'm gonna be like him, yeah.
You know I'm gonna be like him."

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, dad?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then.
You know we'll have a good time then."

Well, he came from college just the other day,
So much like a man I just had to say,
"Son, I'm proud of you. Can you sit for a while?"
He shook his head, and he said with a smile,
"What I'd really like, dad, is to borrow the car keys.
See you later. Can I have them please?"

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then, dad.
You know we'll have a good time then."

I've long since retired and my son's moved away.
I called him up just the other day.
I said, "I'd like to see you if you don't mind."
He said, "I'd love to, dad, if I could find the time.
You see, my new job's a hassle, and the kid's got the flu,
But it's sure nice talking to you, dad.
It's been sure nice talking to you."
And as I hung up the phone, it occurred to me,
He'd grown up just like me.
My boy was just like me.

And the cat's in the cradle and the silver spoon,
Little boy blue and the man in the moon.
"When you coming home, son?" "I don't know when,
But we'll get together then, dad.
We're gonna have a good time then.

Universal Soldier - Donovan, I think

He's five foot-two, and he's six feet-four,
He fights with missiles and with spears.
He's all of thirty-one, and he's only seventeen,
Been a soldier for a thousand years.

He'a a Catholic, a Hindu, an Atheist, a Jain,
A Buddhist and a Baptist and a Jew.
And he knows he shouldn't kill,
And he knows he always will,
Kill you for me my friend and me for you.

And he's fighting for Canada,
He's fighting for France,
He's fighting for the USA,
And he's fighting for the Russians,
And he's fighting for Japan,
And he thinks we'll put an end to war this way.

And he's fighting for Democracy,
He's fighting for the Reds,
He says it's for the peace of all.
He's the one who must decide,
Who's to live and who's to die,
And he never sees the writing on the wall.

But without him,
How would Hitler have condemned him at Labau?
Without him Caesar would have stood alone,
He's the one who gives his body
As a weapon of the war,
And without him all this killing can't go on.

He's the Universal Soldier and he really is to blame,
His orders come from far away no more,
They come from here and there and you and me,
And brothers can't you see,
This is not the way we put the end to war.

DON’T LOOK NOW (IT AIN’T YOU OR ME)
by
John Cameron Fogerty
Creedence Clearwater Revival
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Who will take the coal from the mine?
Who will take the salt from the earth?
Who'll take a leaf and grow it to a tree

Who will work the fields with his hands?
Who will take the back to the plough?
Who'll take the mountain and give it to the sea?
Don't look now, it ain't you or me.

Don't look now, someone's done your starvin'
Don't look now, someone's done your prayin' too

Who will make the shoes for your feet?
Who will make the clothes that you wear?
Who´ll take the promise that you don't have to keep?
Don't look now, it ain't you or me.

Don't look now, someone's done your starvin'
Don't look now, someone's done your prayin' too

Who will take the coal from the mines?
Who will take the salt from the earth?
Who´ll take the promise that you don't have to keep?
Don't look now, it ain't you or me.

Was looking at the crucifix. Got something in my eye. A Light that doesn't need to live and doesn't need to die. What's written in the Book of Love is strangely incomplete, 'til witnessed here in time and blood a thousand kisses deep.

THE DANCE

Looking back on the memory of
The dance we shared beneath the stars above
For a moment all the world was right
How could I have known you'd ever say goodbye
And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance
Holding you I held everything
For a moment wasn't I the king
But if I'd only known how the king would fall
Hey who's to say you know I might have changed it all
And now I'm glad I didn't know
The way it all would end the way it all would go
Our lives are better left to chance I could have missed the pain
But I'd of had to miss the dance
Yes my life is better left to chance
I could have missed the pain but I'd of had to miss the dance
Garth Brooks

I love these lyrics They make me think of my daughter, but in more of a feel good way than a sad way

What You Became - by Anacrusis
lyrics by Ken Nardi

You've grown into this faceless mask and empty shell
And, like a ghost of your indulgence, you wear them well.
Still haunting something, by your own hand, lost
And you shiver with the chilling sense
You've saved nothing for yourself…

The lies, the games,
Devoid of guilt or shame
Now you resent what you became
And the reality of only you to blame

You wander through each desperate hour and numbered day
And long to hold each wasted moment spent in vain
Still missing something you've slain so wrecklessly
And ignored it through shortsightedness
The thought that someday you might care

The lies, the games,
Devoid of guilt or shame
Now you resent what you became
And the reality of only you to blame

Now you resent what you became
And the reality of only you to blame

You've grown into this faceless mask and empty shell
And, like a ghost of indulgence, you wear them well
Still haunting something, by your own hand, lost
And you shiver with the chilling sense
You've saved nothing…
Nothing for yourself…

Now you resent what you became
And the reality of only you to blame

On the subject of thinking of kids and song lyrics...."I Hope You Dance" is also one of my favorite song lyrics.........along with all of the RUSH 2112 song lyrics - always liked that albumn! (Giving away my age now - mentioning record albums!) I still have my Peaches box full of my old record albumns though!

I HOPE YOU DANCE
I hope you never lose your sense of wonder
You get your fill to eat
But always keep that hunger
May you never take one single breath for granted
God forbid love ever leave you empty handed
I hope you still feel small
When you stand by the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me you'll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
I hope you dance

I hope you never fear those mountains in the distance
Never settle for the path of least resistance
Living might mean taking chances
But they're worth taking
Lovin' might be a mistake
But it's worth making
Don't let some hell bent heart
Leave you bitter
When you come close to selling out
Reconsider
Give the heavens above
More than just a passing glance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
I hope you dance
(Time is a real and constant motion always)
I hope you dance
(Rolling us along)
I hope you dance
(Tell me who)
I hope you dance
(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)
(Where those years have gone)

I hope you still feel small
When you stand by the ocean
Whenever one door closes, I hope one more opens
Promise me you'll give faith a fighting chance

And when you get the choice to sit it out or dance
Dance
I hope you dance
I hope you dance
(Time is a real and constant motion always)
I hope you dance
(Rolling us along)
I hope you dance
(Tell me who)
(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)
I hope you dance
(Where those years have gone)

(Tell me who)
I hope you dance
(Wants to look back on their youth and wonder)
(Where those years have gone)

Limb By Limb (Anastasio, Marshall, Herman)

the shoulder that I leaned on was carved out of stone
but when I'm done freezing I want to be alone

never want my hand cut off
never want a hacking cough
never need a cliffside push
never turn my brain to mush

always give me what I lack
always take the best parts back
always recognize your fate
always just a moment late

left is where I always turn
left is how I'm forced to learn
left the route my walking takes
left alone with my mistakes

up against the person who
up 'til now I never knew
up from hell the answer blew
up or down it's up to you

drop me off the Chinese wall
and peel my fingers off the rim
I come unglued while in midair and land to reform
limb by limb

and I am taken far away...

lingering slowly melting away
tossed with the salad and baled with the hay
pooling like water that drips from above
trampled by lambs pecked by the dove

-Phish/Marshall

Self

Grass has been greater
Skies have been bluer
I know my soul is down in the sewer

You say that I am selfish
Well you know that that is true
I don't care what you say pretty mama
And I don't care what you do

I don't care about anyone except myself
I don't care about anyone except myself
In the land of the brave
And the home of the free
I don't care about anyone except for me

If you are unhappy and
You have not won your race
Well, there ain't no mercy in this world
And there ain't none out in space

So welcome to the nineties
I hope that you make it through
But if you get in trouble honey
This is what I say to you

I don't care about anyone except myself
I don't care about anyone except myself
In the land of the brave
And the home of the free
I don't care about anyone except for me

This is not the era of roses, peace and love
I must admit I'm the only one
That I'm thinking of

Well, I just make my honey
And I put it in the bank
I buy myself some presents
With no one but myself to thank

As the subject of Rush keeps coming up, I will have to mention lyrics to Subdivisions, Show Don't Tell, Natural Science, Vital Signs, A Farewell to Kings, and as honarable mention: the unsung beauty of La Villa Strangiato.

In a dream
It would seem
I went to those who close the open door.
And turning the key
I sat, and spoke to those inside of me......

Something for us Jesus freaks

Ben Harper - Power Of The Gospel Lyrics
It will make a weak man mighty
it will make a mighty man fall
it will fill your heart and hands
or leave you with nothing at all
it's the eyes for the blind
and legs for the lame
it is love for hate
and pride for shame
that's the power of the gospel
that's the power of the gospel
that's the power of the mighty power
that's the power of the gospel
gospel on the water
gospel on the land
the gospel in every woman
the gospel in every man
gospel in the garden
gospel in the trees
the gospel that's inside of you
the gospel inside of me
that's the power of the gospel
that's the power of the gospel
that's the power of the mighty power
that's the power of the gospel
in the hour of the richness
in the hour of need
for all of creation
comes from the gospel seed
now you may leave tomorrow
and you may leave today
but you've got to have the gospel
when you start out on your way
that's the power of the gospel
that's the power of the gospel
that's the power of the mighty power
that's the power of the gospel

and the brilliant simplicity of Trees.
then there's always the entire Operation Mindcrime album by QR.
and my geeky side is often touched by some Garth Brooks lyrics- so simple but so true.
and "Somebody" by Depeche Mode.

Cowboy Junkies have some great lyrics like:

No one in sight for 50 miles.
Sleeping fields sigh as I glide across their spines.
If I can just make the crest of that hill
the whole day will tumble and out the night will spill.
The sky is still as a spinning top.
Shooting stars drop like burning words from above.
If I could just connect all these dots,
the truth would tumble like a cynic vexed by love.
The people will tell you that you're miles from your home
- miles fom your home.
But that's where I want to be
out there searching,
out here fumbling...

- Miles from our Home

Great imagery and poetry in those lyrics!

And I will always love the following:

If I could tell the world just one thing it would be -
You're all okay.
And not to worry
because worry is wasteful and useless in times like these
I won't be made useless
I won't be idled by despair
I've given myself around my faith.
Its light the darkness most fears.

My hands are small I know
but they're not yours, they are my own,
and I am never broken.

Povery stole your golden shoes,
but it didn't steal your laughter.
Heartache came to visit me,
but I knew it wasn't ever after.
We'll fight, not out of spite
but someone must stand up for what's right.
Where there is a man who has no voice,
there I shall be seen.

My hands are small, I know
but they're not yours, they are my own
and I am never broken.

In the end only kindness matters.
In the end only kindness matters.
I will get down on my knees and I will pray.
I will get down on my knees and I will pray.

My hands are small I know
but they're not yours, they are my own,
and I am never broken.
We are never broken.

We are God's eyes.
We are God's hands.
God's eyes
God's hands

-Jewel, "Hands"

That song has gotten me through many a dark moment.

Actually Roland's over here, sort of along with a clever rewording of Lawyers, Guns, and Money (which I very nearly posted the lyrics to in this thread).
