Ladies and Gentlemen... your Rock Bands Cellar Field of 64

Take a breath, look over the selections... they have been seeded carefully for your maximum enjoyment.

So many of the top seeds were British that I put mostly Americans into the West. Major Aussie seeds go in the South of course.

lumberjim 04-18-2006 08:07 PM

man. i was about to lose my shit. i came straight to the above post, went to the grid, and saw cake....and not metallica. but then, reading back, saw that i missed the bus...bad timing. oh well.....democracy isnt for everyone.

go zeppelin!

3rd seed, ut, you prick?

Undertoad 04-18-2006 08:13 PM

No way man it was the voters choice i only pick the division. And I think you think I may have been helpful in that regard if you go back and look at the field.

smoothmoniker 04-18-2006 08:19 PM

Help me out, somebody. This is the first 64 I've participated in ... how/where do we vote?

Undertoad 04-18-2006 08:26 PM

Well the first round is usually pretty grueling since there are 32 matches to play. What happens is that we go in order, I announce the beginning of the match in my post by writing
"such-n-such
vs
so-n-so"

And then you post your vote.

My guess is this will be more popular than landmarks, and so let's go with best-of-5, repeat voting allowed.

Since it's best-of-five, once three votes are recorded for a side, no need to vote further. You may record your pleasure or displeasure with a result, and you may argue for a side during a match.

As always I am the Final Arbiter, and am drunk with power over what is clearly nothing more than a friendly competition.

Let the games begin with my next post.

Pink Floyd (1)
vs
White Zombie (16)

Rock Steady 04-18-2006 08:29 PM

PINK FLOYD

lumberjim 04-18-2006 08:29 PM

yeah, i know. i was just funnin ya. zeppelin is so huge that i think many people just assume they'll seed a one, and this whole thing will boil down to zep v. beatles. i was surprised is all. especially to see them seeded behind u2 and black sabbath? cripes. what's wrong with you people!>?#$%@)(*&

lumberjim 04-18-2006 08:30 PM

fa....loyd

Rock Steady 04-18-2006 08:34 PM

There are some unfortunate matchups for some of my favorite bands. Talking Heads vs Clash? R U kidding me? Some other loser band makes it into the sweet sixteen instead of one of those two.

marichiko 04-18-2006 08:38 PM

Unanimous for the Pinkster!

JayMcGee 04-18-2006 08:45 PM

no contest.... Pink Floyd...

Rock Steady 04-18-2006 08:57 PM

"... by the way, which one's Pink?"

Rock Steady 04-18-2006 09:04 PM

The Beatles aren't a rock band, they're a Pop Group. I hate zep, but I'm not going to vote for the opposing band unless I actually like the opposing band; otherwise I'll pass. I thought it would come down to Pink Floyd versus U2, but what do I know. See you on the dark side of the moon.

Undertoad 04-18-2006 09:11 PM

Pink Floyd wins.

10,000 Maniacs (8)
vs
Crosby Stills and Nash (9)

Rock Steady 04-18-2006 09:18 PM

10,000 Maniacs

I love Natalie Merchant.

Beestie 04-18-2006 09:21 PM

CSN.

The Beatles aren't a rock band but Natalie Merchant is?

And I just realized who I forgot to nominate. Traffic. Not a travesty but still.

Rock Steady 04-18-2006 09:45 PM

10,000 Maniacs is a Folk Rock Band.

CSN is a pop-folk group. They don't play rock.

lumberjim 04-18-2006 09:50 PM

I love Natalie, too. but 10k maniacs is nowhere near CSN

CSN!

marichiko 04-18-2006 09:51 PM

10,000! Damnit!

MaryMary 04-18-2006 09:52 PM

CSN

Undertoad 04-18-2006 10:04 PM

CSN wins.

Who (5)
vs
Simple Minds (12)

Rock Steady 04-18-2006 10:12 PM

I can't believe I forgot to second them.

W.HI.P 04-18-2006 10:55 PM

Genesis (Gabriel!) ...both are good though

Rock Steady 04-18-2006 11:21 PM

Peter Gabriel's Genesis

A lamb lies down on broadway

Clodfobble 04-18-2006 11:25 PM

Genesis

wolf 04-19-2006 12:02 AM

It's a moot point now, but Eurythmics over Genesis with Phil Collins. Genesis with PG was a totally different animal.

lumberjim 04-19-2006 01:01 AM

hey. wAIT A MINUTE. how in the hell did Van Halen NOT make it into the tournament?

also: CSN should be CSNY. i mean really. there's a big difference.....CSNY includes CSN's work. CSN excludes Mr Young. fix that UT?

smoothmoniker 04-19-2006 01:29 AM

genesis

Because it was "best rock bands", not "best imitation of early teen male masturbation with an electric guitar"

But if it were, they would win, hands down.

TiddyBaby 04-19-2006 01:34 AM

Phil collins annoys me... I'll go with the girl. Get em Annie

Cyclefrance 04-19-2006 05:47 AM

I can see I'll have to stay up late to participate in this - it's all going on during UK beddy-byes time....

Some good pairings UT - hope I'm around f(awake that is) or some of the harder choices...

Undertoad 04-19-2006 06:59 AM

Genesis wins. (With or without Gabriel! Nobody has put together an album like Trick of the Tail, and Collins' drum sound, which was actually developed for Gabriel's third album, literally defined the 80s.)

REM (6)
vs
Doors (11)

JayMcGee 04-19-2006 07:04 AM

Doors.

how can you even ask?

Beestie 04-19-2006 07:51 AM

The Doors

glatt 04-19-2006 08:00 AM

Doors. (Nothing against REM, though.)

Undertoad 04-19-2006 08:56 AM

Doors win... score one for the drunken cheesy lounge singer.

glatt 04-19-2006 09:40 AM

Good point about the fouls. Did I foul? Or are two in a row OK this time?

Feel free to ignore my vote if I fouled.

Cyclefrance 04-19-2006 09:53 AM

I think it should only be a foul if Police win without your vote Glatt - that's fair isn't it?

Undertoad 04-19-2006 10:54 AM

Revotes are allowed this time.

smoothmoniker 04-19-2006 11:04 AM

Police

Undertoad 04-19-2006 11:08 AM

Police win

ELO (7)
vs
Sex Pistols (10)

http://cellar.org/fieldof64/64.php?field=bands

Cyclefrance 04-19-2006 11:31 AM

In that case:

ELO - class over arse.

W.HI.P 04-19-2006 11:35 AM

Sex Pistols

Rock Steady 04-19-2006 01:04 PM

Doors won. Police beat DEVO.

What is a revote? You mean change a vote? Certainly the same person shouldn't vote twice in the same runoff. That seems ridiculous.

A revote is voting in back to back matches. In the past they have been banned at times and been allowed at other times. They are allowed now.

vote: Sex Pistols

Cyclefrance 04-19-2006 01:13 PM

I think by 'revote' UT means that you can vote for the next pair that immediately follows - this was not permitted in the World Landmarks rules.

JayMcGee 04-19-2006 01:22 PM

ELO

smoothmoniker 04-19-2006 01:29 PM

I'm going to say Sex Pistols, simply on the basis of impact.

Elspode 04-19-2006 01:37 PM

ELO on the basis of not giving me a headache.

ferret88 04-19-2006 02:15 PM

Sex Pistols
