Yeah, it was pretty sticky. The power lines down the Jersey shore look like that, except it's not coming off and threatening to take the wires down. :(
Oh, and they're saying we'll get another foot on Tuesday night.

zippyt 02-08-2010 07:01 AM

Well we didnt get Thah much snow , but enough for my boss to call a snow day

glatt 02-08-2010 07:09 AM

No school for the kids, and no work for me today. If they hadn't given me the day off, I would have called in. Shoveling was freaking brutal, and I need a day off after all that.

We ended up hosting one neighborhood family because they had lost power and we still had ours. It was fun, but also a little tiring to play host to them with little notice. We stayed up late with the grownups playing euchre. That was fun.

And then another neighbor and I shoveled the driveway of the little old lady behind us. She has a long driveway, and to make it harder, the neighbor next to the old lady asked us nicely not pile pile any snow on their property as we were shoveling. So we had to carry all the snow to the one side and throw it up onto a hill. If you didn't throw it far enough, it would roll back down into the driveway. This neighbor was afraid of huge piles of melting snow flooding their basement. So I see their point, but it sucked.

The county did a great job (by our standards down here) clearing the snow. Within 24 hours of the snow ending, you could see the pavement on our little residential street. Much better than in years past, where they never plowed and we just had to wait for it to melt.

Trilby 02-08-2010 07:13 AM

blessings on your head, glatt. Piling jewels up in heaven, you are.

We're supposed to get more snow tuesday with winds up to 35 mph. THAT should be fun.

Thanks, but I think for that to work, I'm not supposed to mention it or heaven forbid, bitch about it.

ah. You must be Catholic.

Undertoad 02-08-2010 09:40 AM

Somewhere between 6" and 18" starting tomorrow night, on top of the 20" already on the ground. This is already a record-breaking snow accum. for the Philly area, with over 500% of the normal snowfall totals by this date.

jinx 02-08-2010 09:56 AM

Just got my rental Expedition. It's big and sloppy but it'll do. Jim's gonna go try and find my jeep and get my cd's and crap out of it.

Pico and ME 02-08-2010 11:20 PM

Darn, wish I could have been there!

World largest snowball fight!

Griff 02-09-2010 05:40 AM

Next round commencing. We may be looking at worst case scenario, we get pounded but work/school being North of us stays open... I want a real storm up here!

glatt 02-09-2010 07:57 AM

Work is canceled again today, which is always nice, I suppose. But I know this is costing my firm a lot of money to pay all these people to stay home, and I want them to be profitable "in these difficult economic times," so I'm lukewarm about the days off. I bet we won't be back to work until Friday at the soonest.

Round two is coming tonight. We're wondering what we should be doing to prepare for a possible power outage. Decided to do some laundry, charge cell phones, and make sure to take showers today while we can. We have plenty of food.

classicman 02-09-2010 07:59 AM

Get some firewood, hot chocolate, mini marshmallows, chocolate bars and graham crackers. Have S'mores and hot chocolate by the fireplace, play games and tell stories with your kids.

Why don't you suggest they go the route of my employer? I'm using vacation time.

I'm not quite that lukewarm about it.

skysidhe 02-09-2010 08:44 AM

hey pico

Your link reminds me of this one I saw in December.

A bunch of strangers in NYC just having fun in the snow. It's great.

I have the powerrrrrr!!!!

Trilby 02-09-2010 08:57 AM

Snowskull is awesome.

monster 02-09-2010 09:29 AM

Hee hee @ snowskull.

We have snow, finally. About an inch in the last two hours. We're supposed to have a swim meet this evening. I'm thinking not. Which is a pain. But then a night off is always cool and there's almost guaranteed to be no school tomorrow because the schools allow for five snow days and we haven't had one yet. Of course it has to be the one day I have to go out anyway because it's my figure skating class which -being a winter sport- doesn't stop for snow.

glatt 02-09-2010 11:00 AM

I went to the neighborhood grocery store. We had plenty of food, but it occurred to me that we didn't have enough party food, so I got some wine and cheese and crackers and chips, and ice cream. You know, the staples.

The shelves for milk and eggs and most produce were bare, but packaged food was all stocked pretty well.

We're set for party time for a couple days.

lumberjim 02-09-2010 11:06 AM

I have most of a case of Golden Monkey. I'm sure jinx will lay in plenty of Taco ingredients.....

I think I'll stop and get some cream in case we have to make coffe

glatt 02-09-2010 11:11 AM

When I was a kid, we never seemed to know when it was going to snow. It did or didn't and you just took it in stride. Forecasting is really pretty good now, that you know 4 days in advance that the big one is coming. It's pretty amazing, when you think about it.

wolf 02-09-2010 12:06 PM

I feel it looming. As of last night, the ambulanceboi entered a prediction of 24-30" for our county. He was dead on with the last one, and prides himself on his ability to read a weather map.

I was just going to give Jigna my phone number so she can call when she has my latte ready and wants a ride....

Undertoad 02-09-2010 12:21 PM

phillyweather.net says 10-18 in Montco.

jinx 02-09-2010 01:14 PM

Everyone knows Chesco gets all the best snow storms...

lumberjim 02-09-2010 01:26 PM

WHooooooHOOOOOO.>>!!!!

in your FACE, Montco!

Trilby 02-09-2010 01:29 PM

my area is getting a dumping. It's been snowing allllllllll day - those big, fat, white flakes that could knock you unconscious - that's how big they are.

next - HIGH WINDS! YAAAAAAAY! Love me some snow storm!

Undertoad 02-09-2010 02:15 PM

Lancco is supposed to win this one guys!

How the Brits should enjoy our Pennsylvania county monikers.

Happy Monkey 02-09-2010 03:21 PM

It has started in DC.

monster 02-09-2010 06:41 PM

'bout three inches so far, hard to tell because we shovelled. maybe 4. Swim meet cancelled. nobody thinks there will be school tomorrow.

monster 02-09-2010 10:07 PM

Wow! At 10pm no school tomorrow confirmed.....earliest call evah!

lumberjim 02-09-2010 11:23 PM

took me 2 hours to drive home at 35-40 mph. 2-3 inches on the ground so far...

bad news is that this is heavy, sticky snow....not fluffy stuff like the first blast

if we get 18 inches of this shit...shoveling is going to suck ass

xoxoxoBruce 02-10-2010 01:48 AM

My boss did a 4 minute dissertation on if there's a state of emergency... without an infraction... sick day... vacation day, but if there's no state of... make up on saturday... Delaware... New Jersey...yada yada yada.

I said, "I ain't comin'".

They gave us today off too, but said we would be open tomorrow no matter what. Just another way of saying we'll need to use vacation days if we stay home. Seems fair to me. We've had 3.5 days off in a row now.

RFN. Not so bad. We got our paper delivery.

Happy Monkey 02-10-2010 08:12 AM

I'm not going outside.

Yay! Snow day! We'll be lucky to get 10" in, not part of the Anglo naming scheme, Susquehanna County. Upper right of the lj map.

monster 02-10-2010 08:20 AM

OK all shovelled. Now waiting for the city snow plows to come and shove a foot high wall of ice up my drive.....

(sounds like a euphemism if there ever was one....)

I expect it to be ready for me when I get back from figure skating.

Wish me luck...... I'm going out now, I may be some time.......

wolf 02-10-2010 08:38 AM

My favorite part of my drive home last night was seeing that some idiot went off the road in exactly the same place as some idiot did during Friday night's storm. See, there's this itty bitty hill, that you don't even notice is a hill when it's dry, that becomes Satan's Sliding Board once it gets the tiniest bit of snow on it.

I, of course, wondered if it were the same idiot, or if they had imported a fresh one for the occasion.

Griff 02-10-2010 08:43 AM

I vote import. DOT spent the summer adding silly signage to my hill... many of which are quite flat now. The signs seem closer to the road than normal.

skysidhe 02-10-2010 09:57 AM

wow Happy Monkey. That's some storm.

Pete Zicato 02-10-2010 10:33 AM

Snow. Bleah.

lumberjim 02-10-2010 11:08 AM

we have another foot at least at this point. it's heart attack snow, too. heavy as balls, but good for a snowball fight. there's no freaking place to pile it!

Katkeeper 02-10-2010 11:27 AM

York should be added to the county list with English names...

wolf 02-10-2010 11:50 AM

OtherBoss just texted me. The ambulance is coming to take me away.

Ho ho, he he, ha ha.

lumberjim 02-10-2010 12:20 PM

holy fuck it's snowing its ass off here. i almost carked it walking through 50 yards of above my knees deep snow. i had to stop and suck wind twice. for fux ache!

It's pretty steady, and then every once in a while, a wind comes through and you wonder if it's going to rip the roof off.

Undertoad 02-10-2010 01:31 PM

Most eastern Pennsylvania interstate highways are closed as of 2pm, until midnight: I-78, I-81, I-83, I-76, I-476, I-676, Roosevelt Blvd. Only I-95 remains open in the area. Still another 8 in. due until it ends tonight.

These two storms combined are the snow event of a lifetime around here. Rare is the winter where there's a 20" storm - now we're gonna have three, two of them separated by 3 days of time.

(Non-US: those "I" thingies are road numbers)

Undertoad 02-10-2010 01:40 PM

Holy crap - they are saying 45+ MPH winds are coming in an hour or two.

The drifts are gonna be WILD.

classicman 02-10-2010 01:55 PM

I can't see this shit drifting anywhere - Its so damn heavy!

Buggers did it before I even went out, had to dig out two tracks, now I'm back not looking forward to the rest of it

jinx 02-10-2010 02:02 PM

Jigna just called from Dunkin Donuts wishing to get home. Jim was able to get the Expedition out and rescue her, but now it's stuck at an odd angle in the driveways. No way our neighbors were getting out anyway.

TheMercenary 02-10-2010 02:11 PM

According to CNN Philly sounds pretty much closed down.

monster 02-10-2010 02:29 PM

Who is Jigna?

jinx 02-10-2010 02:43 PM

She's the lady that makes my latte every day. We're very close.

squirell nutkin 02-10-2010 02:49 PM

I think Jigna is their indian mail order bride whom they have indentured at the local DD to work off her passage.

I believe she is also one of the people on the (near)Asian Cultural Lunch Exchange Program from whence the lumberjim family derive their samosae.

monster 02-10-2010 02:50 PM

Is she the one who makes the Indian food for you to try?
