You can use this site to translate Al-Jazeera.

elSicomoro 03-20-2003 11:06 AM

And above all, make sure you're checking out a variety of news sources for this war. Because if you're getting all your news from one source, you are unintelligent, and an oxygen waster. My viewing habits thus far:

MSNBC

BBC

FOX

CBS

CBC

ITV

Sky News

ABC (Aust. Broadcasting Co.)

CNN

Not to mention, all the print stuff...

My personal preference, of course, is MSNBC...Peter Arnett...what a coup for them.

Griff 03-20-2003 04:16 PM

My receptions not so great, at least while hiding under this rock.

elSicomoro 03-22-2003 12:14 AM

Ever wonder what the US flag might look like if Puerto Rico becomes a state? Or we absorb Canada? These folks have a bit too much time on their hands.

elSicomoro 04-04-2003 10:07 AM

The Nomecam does indeed still live, although it is now known as the Nuggetcam (now named after the local newspaper, the Nome Nugget, whom I suspect now maintain the camera).

"Nuggetcam" just doesn't sound right though...say 'em with me, people:

Nomecam

Nuggetcam

"Nomecam" rolls nicely off your tongue...it sounds pleasant. "Nuggetcam" just sounds retarded.

But at least I can continue my weird obsession with Alaska.

elSicomoro 06-17-2003 07:49 PM

What the World Thinks of America: A web portion of a TV special that airs tonight on CBC Television. Media from 10 nations look at the US from their own country's perspectives. Interesting stuff...I hope they make the show available on their archives.

Griff 06-18-2003 06:25 AM

Sounds interesting. Here are some of the poll results.

LMAO, the "Nuggetcam"! You *KNOW* what word I wanna add to the beginning of "nugget"...*hinthint* (think "Sally"). Hehe! Too funny! :D

So, did anyone register for the Federal Do Not Call List today?

xoxoxoBruce 06-27-2003 10:32 PM

They said on the tube, east of the Mississippi, you can't sign up until after July 7th.

elSicomoro 06-27-2003 10:44 PM

You can sign up online, you just can't call to sign up before 7/7 if you live on this side of the Mississippi.

wolf 06-28-2003 12:45 AM

The site is getting 1,000 hits per second.

You can't get through to it to register.

(been trying off and on all day today)

elSicomoro 06-28-2003 12:51 AM

I got through at about 11pm...I'm just waiting for my confirmation e-mail.

elSicomoro 06-28-2003 01:17 AM

As It Happens: A current affairs show on CBC Radio One at 6:30p ET M-F. Sorta like NPR's All Things Considered, but with more of an interview angle. They cover happenings not only in Canada, but the world in general. It's carried on many stations in the US through Public Radio International. (Here in the Philadelphia area, it's on NJN Public Radio--88.1FM--at 9pm.) Good stuff.

elSicomoro 06-28-2003 02:23 AM

As you may have heard, Mohammed Saeed al-Sahaf, the Iraqi Minister of Information, appeared Thursday for the first time since the fall of Baghdad. Where's he been all this time?

Traveling.

Go to Google.

Type in "weapons of mass destruction" (no quotes).

Click the "I'm Feeling Lucky" button.

What decade is your personality living in?: I found this on dagney's blog. It's pretty cool, and anyone over 20 should be able to answer all the questions.

As far as myself, my personality is living in the '60s.

??? *shrugs*

xoxoxoBruce 07-19-2003 02:20 PM

Ah..living in the 50's. Don't I wish that were true...sigh:p

Britain's TV Licensing website
: If you live in the UK, you have to pay £116 each year to use a television...just a tad over $183 US. And they don't sound like they're playing around on it either...check out their favorite excuses section.

xoxoxoBruce 07-20-2003 06:41 PM

Good one Syc. The guy in his underwear and barefoot saying "I don't live here". Ha Ha Ha.:D

elSicomoro 07-20-2003 07:01 PM

Psycho cat was good too.

That boggles my mind...you have to pay for the TV, then pay a yearly fee just to watch it. PBS would like us to donate to them, but it's not like we have to.

You know, there have been some questions I've been meaning to ask our British friends for about a week now, and the whole TV issue has inspired me.

New thread to come...

elSicomoro 07-21-2003 12:58 PM

Not really a site, but Dave's employer is in the spotlight on CNN.com.

xoxoxoBruce 07-21-2003 04:24 PM

I read an article about those NSA data mining programs that can handle a bazillion phone calls or emails simultaneously. It's mind boggleing! I guess Dave owns LESS than 1.2% of the company;)

elSicomoro 07-21-2003 07:29 PM

When you go to his building, it's fairly tight security. IIRC, you have to show the guard your ID and he types out your name on the computer, which makes a name tag. I believe they put the person down that you are visiting too. Then that person has to meet you down at the lobby to escort you to wherever.

It's been over a year since I've been there, but I think that's how it went.

Yo d, how the hell did you get that job there anyway?

(not the disco 70s. I would be living in the Hard Rock 70s. My Columbia House Record Club membership even said so.)

dave 07-22-2003 05:24 AM

The funny thing is, security is tighter now, and this is our "lax" building. I'd have to do a whole hell of a lot more to get you in to the "Towers" they mention in the article (those are right across the parking lot from me - they have a better cafeteria).

It's a pretty great company to work for. The benefits are awesome and the environment is very cool. The people here are some of the best I've met.

How I got the job is a long story, but basically, they got my resumé and my skills sold me. There was a long day of interviewing (like four, five hours) and then they made me an offer for about four times what I was making at the time. I was like "uh, yeah, I guess I'll accept."

Griff 07-22-2003 06:21 AM

90s? hmmm... 1790s maybe...

Petes company is privately owned as well. There is something about the culture of the business that makes people more professsional and dedicated than the larger publicly traded companies. They seem to take more responsibility for their work.

dave 07-22-2003 06:29 AM

Yeah, I think it's a good idea. It keeps most of us common folk from being super millionaires, but by the same token, it's more evenly distributed. I probably won't make myself $200 million working here, but I'll almost certainly retire a millionaire many times over and probably early.

One of the cool things we do is stock is awarded based upon performance. So, anyone can buy up to a certain amount of stock, but after that, it needs to get approved. It's not a perfect system, but it's better than most, I think.

dave 07-22-2003 06:31 AM

And like the article said, the biggest shareholder, our CEO, owns a whopping <b>1.2 percent</b> of the company. His salary is actually relatively small for a CEO, as well. I obviously don't know exact details, but I know the ballpark, and it's not close to these people running comparable companies.

I like it a lot.

Yes. We have 1,282 openings in VA, 186 in DC, 357 in MD, 37 in PA, 41 in NJ. And of course, tons of openings elsewhere.

The Republic of the Marshall Islands and the United States: A Strategic Partnership: The Marshall Islands are now an independent country, but were part of a UN Trust Territory administered by the US from 1947 to 1986. Most might be more familiar with what went on there--weapons testing on the atolls of Bikini and Enewetak in the 40s and 50s.

The above link is an online exhibit presented by the Marshall Islands that includes photos and documents that center on the relationship between the Islands and the US.

elSicomoro 09-20-2003 07:05 PM

The Communist Party of Ontario: It's currently election season in Ontario, and when it comes to air time, the CBC has to give all recognized parties equal time...including the Communists. Read their platform--a combination of idealism, stupidity, and lack of reality.
