What invention each state gave us.

Gravdigr 03-27-2014 02:09 PM

Chewing gum was not invented in Kentucky.

The word Kentucky does not appear on the Wikipedia 'Chewing Gum' page, either.

I thought Maine was going to get credit for earmuffs, not for the microwave.

Looking up the history of the microwave, it was invented by a guy from Maine who invented it while working for Raytheon in Cambridge Mass.

Gravdigr 03-27-2014 02:47 PM

Is he the guy what melted his candy bar when he walked past a transmitter?

glatt 03-27-2014 03:27 PM

Indeed

Edit: And he was walking past a transmitter he invented, so it's not like he was the janitor or something.

Gravdigr 03-27-2014 05:05 PM

Well. I figured the guy was no moolyak, but, I didn't know about the transmitter.

footfootfoot 03-28-2014 07:14 AM

Except the Dutch invented the microscope in the 1590s

Gravdigr 04-02-2014 03:45 PM

Colorized old photographs. Some are meh. Some are WOW! All are better full screen.

And I loved the second part of the sound track. It's passages from an 1860-later Irish immigrant's letters from home.

Frogfish.

Gravdigr 04-04-2014 01:57 PM

Dang, that's fast.

glatt 04-04-2014 02:27 PM

That fish ate another fish the same size as it!

I want one of those, and I want to fly it with the soundtrack from Jonathan Livingston Eagle, I mean Seagull, playing.

Photographers have always had fun playing with super wide-angle lenses, but German videographer Jonas Ginter has found a way to conquer the world with them. At least, that's what it looks like from his latest video, which miniaturizes our planet to an adorable scale. The video's known as a stereographic projection — it's named for a technique that turns a spherical surface into a 2D plane. Before going for a bike ride, Ginter first needed to make a camera rig that could capture nearly 360-degree video, and to do so he stuck six GoPro cameras together with a custom-designed, 3D-printed mold. The end result is a wonderfully quirky perspective. It's not the first time we've seen this technique in action (some are even using Google Street View images to make similar videos), but Ginter's final product is impressive.
It's a pretty neat little video. I highly recommend going to Vimeo to watch in full screen.
