You could have cut the baseboard and set your frame flush with the wall. I mean you're never going to move the machines back to the cellar.
Are you moving that outlet out to the face of your construction?

lumberjim 11-13-2019 11:17 PM

Good eye, Bruce. No, we're gonna put a little door on the right side face of that base so we can get to it if we need it. (read Amanda reaching in there) With a notch to allow it to close with wires plugged in. ... At first, I was thinking 3/8" sheet rock, but now I'm thinking Luan cladding on the outside with molding on the edges.

Griff 11-14-2019 05:59 AM

Excellent!

glatt 11-14-2019 11:50 AM

Is that an optical illusion, that the rear horizontal member of the lower box hiding the pipes looks like it's not even close to being level?

Otherwise, it looks like it's going to be really good. That's a nice space there right by the door. Just screaming for something to be built in.

xoxoxoBruce 11-14-2019 02:01 PM

There's a guy up near Binghamton that can make beautiful boards. ;)

It is an illusion. that back cross piece goes diagonal, and the stud is sitting on it.

i was toying with the idea of creating my own molding ,but I think it will be more cost effective to buy it. I have a router table and the bits I would need... but the time it would take is prohibitive.

Griff 11-14-2019 04:38 PM

and my boards are a year away

captainhook455 11-14-2019 06:41 PM

I hope this carpentry is done before I get up there again. I am allergic to dust unless it is in my pipe. Keep up the good work dude.

Now I'm pondering putting shelves into the columns. Either the inside or face.....
Or maybe just trim it out with molding and make the shelves inside the boxed in columns afterwards. I'm going to mount a row of coat hooks on the wall and put a bench between the low boxes with shoe cubbies or drawers or under it. There will be a sophet across the top, and shelves hung from that. The ceiling is 9'. The sophet will be 12", so maybe 18" below the bottom will look good and be useful.

Maybe you could put hooks or clips for wet accessories -hats, gloves, umbrellas...... on the columns? And other entry/exit sundries.....I dunno how much snow you get there, but in winter it's a pain in the ass finding somewhere to dry those things without taking up coat hooks, and we always find it useful to have supplies of towels near the door for both floor mopping and person mopping. Yes, we need a mudroom.

Little shelves in the columns sounds helpful too, perhaps to hold small baskets for the sundries that always end up by the door if not kept in check...... Sunblock in summer. maybe bug spray... Pepper Spray for the JW..... :D

I agree, molding is a pain in the ass even with long clear straight grained wood (if you can find it) and a shaper. Store bought is where it's at. :yesnod:

glatt 11-15-2019 07:56 AM

Nice detail shot there. Now I see why it was an optical illusion.

The glatt household has a big folded beach towel on the floor by the front door for most of the winter. The boots dry there and the melting snow in the treads has someplace to go instead of all over the wood floor.

lumberjim 11-15-2019 09:07 AM

Google built in hall mud room coat rack to see lots of cool ideas. Like this kind of...

glatt 11-15-2019 09:44 AM

You're probably thinking of this already, but I would encourage you to try to mimic the molding on and around the front door as much as reasonably possible to make it look like it has always been there.

lumberjim 11-15-2019 01:01 PM

Yes definititely. That's the plan. Might even distress it in places to make it look not brand new

The sophet got done today

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...a3e6fef477.jpg

I guess next is too attach it to the wall, screw it down to the floor.... And sheath it in.

Gonna be enclosing the water pipes that feed the radiators, so there will be heat to deal with. I'll put a grate or vent on the stair side top of the left column.

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...3ce63c9fe1.jpg

Think I should put a small vent at the bottom of the left base to let air convect when the pipes get hot?

xoxoxoBruce 11-26-2019 08:01 PM

Is that the full time drain or just for the overflow catch pan?

lumberjim 11-27-2019 08:33 AM

That's the drain. And the supply and fios

xoxoxoBruce 11-27-2019 08:47 AM

Does FIOS work better than laundry soap? :haha:

glatt 11-27-2019 09:28 AM

I would guess that there is not much heat in those radiator supply pipes. They probably get warm, but not hot to the touch..

I figure you have 3 options. Just box them in and don't worry about it. The warmth in the pipes would warm up the woodwork slightly and would contribute to the warmth of the overall house because they run inside the envelope of the insulated house. Or you could put in vents like you suggest to try to let the warmth out of the built-in unit and allow it to get into the house a little more quickly. Or finally, you could put some pipe insulation on those pipes to try to get the warmth up to the radiators and not "lose" any in the enclosed space. I put "lose" in quotes, because the warmth will still pass slowly into your house if you don't insulate the pipes. But by insulating you can try to focus the heating in the upstairs room with the radiator.

The only worry with pipes along an exterior wall is that they can freeze if it gets really cold out and your heat happens to go out. But those look like PEX pipes, and PEX pipes do well when they freeze.

If it were me, I would probably just buy a pack of pipe insulation and insulate the "hot" pipe to try to get that heat up to the radiator. And I wouldn't put vents in.

I'd be curious what you decide to do, but I don't think it matters much.

I thought they are hot and cold to the washing machine and the heat would be the pipe not boxed in to the left of this project, but I might be wrong.

lumberjim 11-27-2019 10:39 PM

Look at post 1679. At the top of the pic you can see 2 white vertical pipes. The one on the right is thicker and it gets hot. The left wall of the left column will go between the 2.

xoxoxoBruce 11-27-2019 11:02 PM

Ah, so the hot pipe is inside the box. :smack:

Clodfobble 12-05-2019 01:23 PM

lumberjim 12-05-2019 01:42 PM

had an optirectomy.

see.. there's a nerve that runs from your optic nerve straight to your rectum. If you cut it, it eliminates your shitty outlook on life.

and I had a little basal cell skin cancer there.

Clodfobble 12-05-2019 03:14 PM

That's a big cut for a "little" skin cancer. My dad had one on his face and it was like two stitches.

Don't be fucking around with me and acting like it's no big deal if it was huge. Was it huge? Do you have to go back for scans, or are they certain it didn't metastasize?

lumberjim 12-05-2019 04:03 PM

It was smaller than a dime. 5mm?

They biopsied it in July and was benign common basal cell. The doctor (Greenbaum) is on the top Dr list every year. Longer cut so it heals flat.

Is ok, I'm fine. My dad gave me this skin.

lumberjim 12-05-2019 04:08 PM

This little spothttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...63b4de75ad.jpg

glatt 12-05-2019 04:43 PM

Sorry you have to deal with this. :(

Keep getting a regular checkup every year. When they catch it early, there’s less cutting they have to do. My wife has been three or four times for Mos surgery. Her forehead has character now.

And wear a wide brimmed hat, ok?

lumberjim 12-05-2019 05:20 PM

i was thinking it had more to do with the C-pap mask i wear. maybe the irritation in combination with the sun. I need to be better with re-applying sunscream.

Clodfobble 12-05-2019 05:42 PM

Glad you're on top of things. Stay well!

fargon 12-05-2019 06:48 PM

Oh No! Fuck cancer.

Gravdigr 12-05-2019 07:26 PM

Momdigr had a thing removed from the same spot earlier this year. They tried freezing it a couple times, didn't take, so to speak. So then they scraped the fucking thing off. Left a helluva divot, it's filling in, though. And the thing hasn't returned, so...

When I first saw your evidence, I thought "Now all ya need are the bolts-in-the-neck, and then ya"---And then I thought, "Too soon, maybe."

It's good ya got it took care of. If nothing else, it's that much off yer mind.

Gravdigr 12-05-2019 07:35 PM

Please take that in jest, as I meant it.

Also, fuck cancer.

Undertoad 12-05-2019 07:40 PM

Get all the health care they are paying for!

One of the advantages of living where we are... good docs want to live and work around here. I begin to get the suspicion that the B team is working out where mama lives in Harrisburg. Just a troubling suspicion.

Well more than a suspicion... when there was real trouble 7 years ago, they sent her to a Penn hospital for the surgery...

Gravdigr 12-06-2019 09:33 AM

Those look like some seriously well-done stitches. Very neat & tidy.

lumberjim 12-06-2019 10:23 AM

The doctor that referred me to him said he's the best, always perfect. And you know how vain I am, and that's the side of my face that faces the customer at my desk when I look at my monitor...

So far, customers been too polite to ask what the head wound is about, but I've had to explain it to the coworkers repeatedly. Never a straight answer. I had a zipper put in so I can change the battery easier, etc.

They truly are very clean stitches, he did a nice job. But I have to admit I'm so incredibly skeptical when I hear that a doctor is the best (usually it's "one of the best in the country" or "best in the state") because the referring doctor/hospital/whatever has every reason to lie to you--first off, you're not going to know, and second, you likely don't have a choice so it's better to just feel good about your fate.

When my father-in-law had a brain tumor, three different nurses went out of their way to reassure us that the surgeon he'd been assigned to was "the best in the state." C'mon--the best neurosurgeon in all of Texas is working at a mid-tier hospital in suburban Fort Worth? No he fucking isn't. But it made my mother-in-law happy, because it was what she wanted to hear. So, okay.

Gravdigr 12-06-2019 01:40 PM

I woulda just figgered that there was only the one neurosurgeon in all of Texas, and everything else was just cowboys.

:stickpoke

lumberjim 12-06-2019 05:08 PM

I did Google him. Steven greenbaum in Philly.

The doctor that referred him didn't seem to be selling anything. He said, you'll wait longer to get in with him, but his work is always perfect. And then gave me 2 other doctors that are also very good. I wasn't in a hurry, so.... And I know a guy that used him and he was 2 thumbs up.

Only hurts when I put on glasses at this point.
