I know a guy on another forum that has a retarded (or whatever the word is) kid.

He constantly hears people saying things are "retarded" on the internet, and he deals with it. Same with things being gay. Same with mama jokes.

well, that's a difference, surely. but not the distinction.

You recall incorrectly, as it happens. Deleted, yes.

Happy Monkey 09-27-2007 01:36 PM

I mainly see similarities; that was the primary distinction.

1) person A makes off-color joke
2) subject protests that it was over the line
3) person A doesn't take it seriously
4) subject insists that they are serious
5) a) Person A deletes the post
or
5) b) Person A makes fun of subject for being a whiner

I don't think that either case actually was over the line, but as they were dealing with other people's families, I can see that the other people have different lines. And while, if I had been person A in either case, I may not have apologized and/or deleted the initial post, I wouldn't have followed it up with more.

Right. I went back and looked it up in the meantime. My apologies for that.

yes, these are similarities. to a point. and i hope that it isnt all you see here. the distinction?

well, first let me say that if the joke is on me i can take it. i've put a pic of myself up here in a mr incredible costume that you could dedicate a whole thread to. the pic monster put up was of my son holding his fingers in an inch apart position and it said 'my dad's weenie is this big'. that's funny...and it actually occured to me that someone could do that.....i just didnt think anyone would. see, the joke is more on him than it is on me, since it's his picture....and if it happened because i put his pic up here....?

he's 9. and, well, that's a bit different than someone saying 'yer mamma' and not falling for the drama, don't you think? I mean....those pics circulate. It could have come around some time years from now or something. the sexual aspect of it was what I thought bothered me at first. but I realized later that it was more of a protective father thing.

I started to tell monster that on gabbly one night, but decided to just let it drop. And I never asked her for an apology, did I? any way...

if I honestly felt like jeb was telling the truth about half of that, I'd man up and apologize. I trust my gut, though. The people that are breaking my balls here are those that have resentment toward me for things I've said to them. I get that. It's only natural. You, however? I'm a little troubled that you look to take this angle. I've always respected your intellect and honest demeanor. Does your gut tell you that I'm a bad guy? Do you see malice in my heart?

lj - from an outsider's perspective, I don't see HM's post as an attack or even taking sides, just a logical analysis of the two situations. Maybe I need to re-read the posts.

oh, I don't think it's an attack. I just wonder at the perspective.

I know HM to be a very subtle and thoughtful sort. when I asked if he saw no distinction between me saying things to a troll and someone doing what they did to a picture of my kid, it seemed like he was intentionally being obtuse about it. my perception. so, it makes me wonder why. if you dislike someone, you are more likely to see the negatives in them, right? I dont think this is the first time this has come up... I guess HM is not a fan of my schtick. meh?

I don't think you're a bad guy, but I'm not a fan of your occasional crusades against random posters. If Jeboduuza is trolling, you're feeding him; if not, you're being hurtful.

I don't.

I'll risk another analogy.

lj is like a big enthusiastic dog. I love dogs, I am most definitely a dog person. I see a lot of stuff like this as a big dog that romps around, very active, happy, hyper. A smart dog, and one that is very social. Likes to be around people, close to people.

Unfortunately, there are situations, there are some people who don't like dogs. Or who like dogs, but don't want to rassle or play tug of war or get their hands slobbery. Whatever, draw your own picture here. You know someone like this.

My point is that by itself, the behavior, it matches the personality perfectly. It is how that dog is. But that behavior is not always appropriate. We have dogs, big dogs. But we don't play fetch in the house. Our dogs understand this. Rowdy is not the only thing they know. They know quiet. They know guard. They know empathy. I know lj understands this, and for sure, lj knows all these and more, duh. But sometimes, there's a mismatch of situation and behavior.

*****FOR ME**** This was one of those times. If the dog grabs your sleeve you'll want to pull back "give me my sleeve back" The dog's thinking "Yeah! I LURVE tug of war". bzzzzt. The very action of the poster (she's dead you jerk/pulling the sleeve back) is read by lj (ha ha funny I got yer joke hangin!/yeah! tug tug tug). A mismatch. In this case, the sleeve was torn off at the shoulder and the guest has left in anger. That is unfortunate, but, after all, this was the dog's house before it was the guest's house. But it could and should become the guest's house too. There can be some way for each guest to learn to live with the other dwellars. Indeed each of us needs to find our own way there. It's just easier when we help each other.

For the record, I think lumberjim is one of the good guys. I know it in my heart.

i think it was the white hat that gave it away. or the cock puppets.
