No it was definitely the Fuzzy Wuzzies. They don't like it up 'em.

DanaC 04-20-2011 04:48 PM

wasn't fuzzy wuzzy a racially abusive term in the 70s? Kind of like golliwog.

skysidhe 04-20-2011 07:48 PM

She can use racially abusive terms in her own Disney Land thread. :P

I am sure it wasn't done with any malicious forethought. It's a paradox, kinda like the
Ouroboros.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fuzzy_Wuzzy

Quote:

Fuzzy-Wuzzy can refer to:

Hadendoa, an East African tribe
Fuzzy-Wuzzy, a poem by Rudyard Kipling
Fuzzy Wuzzy Angels, the name given by Australian troops to a group of Papua New Guinean people who, during World War II, assisted and escorted injured Australian troops down the Kokoda trail
Fuzzy Wuzzy (poem), a popular children's poem/tongue-twister in which a bear is thought to be fuzzy, but it turns out he's not
Fuzzy Wuzzy was a bear
Fuzzy Wuzzy had no hair
Fuzzy Wuzzy wasn't fuzzy, was he?

So I don't know about any derogatory term unless you don't like Hadendoa or Rudyard Kipling.

DanaC 04-21-2011 10:21 AM

It was used as a racist term I'm pretty sure.

The name was given to the Hadendoa because of their elaborate hairstyles (according to wiki), by the British. So it's a descriptive name used by the imperialist brits to describe a native people. Seems not too far from calling someone 'nappy head'.

DanaC 04-21-2011 10:21 AM

Just went and looked at the Urban Dictionary:
Quote:

A racist slur for blacks in England. Originated from a Kipling poem entitled "Fuzzy Wuzzy."
So 'ere's to you, Fuzzy Wuzzy, at your 'ome in the Soudan;
You're a pore benighted 'eathen but a first-class fightin' man;
An' 'ere's to you, Fuzzy Wuzzy, with your 'ayrick 'ead of 'air -
You big black boundin' beggar - for you broke a British square!

infinite monkey 04-21-2011 10:49 AM

Ahhh, I see. In our country it just meant an imaginary fuzzy bear that wasn't fuzzy, was he?

Of course, I guess those undertones could still be there...but I was never aware of them.

monster 04-21-2011 11:26 AM

It's a quote/catchphrase from "Dad's Army". My apologies to whose who were offended.

infinite monkey 04-21-2011 11:28 AM

I dunno. You people are talking a whole other language...English, isn't it?

monster 04-21-2011 11:30 AM

Right. I assumed the Brits would get it and others might google. It never occured to me that people would just think I was being racially offensive. How stupid of me.

infinite monkey 04-21-2011 11:32 AM

Oh, I thought I was supposed to be racially offensive, having brought up the hairless imaginary bear fuzzy wuzzy, who wasn't fuzzy, was he?

Let me ask some of my cow orkers what they think of the pome.

monster 04-21-2011 11:33 AM
