the bastards nearly ground me down today. from all the volunteer shit I still do and some which I stopped doing a while back but my replacement proved ...well you know..... Suddenly the world of real paid work with set hours and expectations seems a whole shitload more attractive

Especially if that paid work gets left at the office when youleave for the night.

Sadly, never have I experienced this.

I've seen repeatedly, volunteer work like monster gets into is the most difficult, thankless, thing imaginable. When you're trying to get it done everyone is like, that's your thing I'm not involved, and/or you have no authority to ask for anything. When you struggle to finish it everyone is like, well you finished and it looks OK, but I would have... or, that's nice, no wonder it took you so long.

The ability of these people to walk away is testimonial to monster's powers of restraint over the urge to eviscerate. :haha:

Reminds me. I'm struggling with whether or not to accept a request to take on a volunteer job. I want to say yes, because I'm a helpful kind of guy, but it's a horrible job for me. Goes against all my avoiding people instincts. I might do OK at it, but it would be really stressful for me.

I've been asked to run a crew that does volunteer construction work for a habitat for humanity type charity. About two months of planning and coordinating and purchasing materials and working with homeowners and getting volunteers lined up and then a day of running the entire show and making sure it all goes smoothly.

I like and respect the guy who is currently doing it and who asked my to step up and take over, but damn, it fills me with anxiety to read the job description.

The problem is that I'm smart and a hard worker, and so people think that I can also be a leader. But that's a job for extroverts.

Not necessarily. I think you'd be awesome. But I think you're right, you would also be stressed.

you'll get used to the role quickly, and it will be very rewarding when it's through. You'll make friends you'll have forever, and learn a shit ton about things you are interested in. rub some dirt on your supposed anxiety and get in the game, Mary!
