Damn, Glatt, does anyone in NZ have two legs the same length? Looks like there's not much flat ground to go around.;)

Did you really have to sit on a toilet with a hole in the side that people could poke twigs, branches or whatever through? Has it had any lasting effects? Like the idea that you can hold hands with a friend while using it though!!!!!!
Happy Monkey is on the right track, but I think it's more of a way of letting the mountain air help circulate and aid in decomposition. I actually had a mouse run in and out once while I was taking care of business.

You see less and less of these now out there, they are mainly on trails that require materials to be brought in by horesback. More females in the program have made for outhouses with more privacy but less of a view.

We had the tv n for background noise the other day and CNN Headline news had a superbrief blurb on this. Steve said, "look honey!" I looked up and scoffed. "I saw that weeks ago on the Cellar. Keep up."

Man, I have to go there someday.

This outhouse is located on Mackinnon Pass on the Milford Track. The Milford Track is a 3 day hike. You reach this outhouse after a 3 hour boatride to the trail head and a day and a half of hiking. In this particular valley (The Clinton valley), they say you can drink the water straight from the stream. There are no nasties in it. So deep in the wilderness, and so few hikers going through, that it hasn't been polluted by any kind of bug. I drank from my canteen anyway.

3 hour boat ride, day and a half hike? Seems like a lot of trouble to take a crap. I thought 30' to the outhouse was bad.:)
