Thanksgiving with cousins. There were lots of appetizers, which are the pix below. The second pix is steam bun with duck, cucumber, and sauce. The last pix is my plate of food. I was so full, especially since one of the cousins kept on serving drinks. :pAttachment 41789Attachment 41790Attachment 41791Attachment 41792

Yum !!!

Yum YUM!

This dish is called "Thit Bo Nhung Dam." Literally, it translates as beef dipped in vinegar. When I googled it, one of the translation is "Beef Vinegar Hotpot." I never knew there were many variations in how to eat this dish. Basically, it's eye round beef, sliced thinly and cooked by dipping into a preferred broth. My household have always made the broth with cold water, vinegar, and a can of beer. The cooked beef is then rolled with salad, mints, and cucumber in rice paper. You then dip the roll in fermented anchovy sauce mixture (anchovy sauce, crushed pineapple, garlic, and chilli).
I will post pictures later. Gotta go now. Someone :mad2: is on my back. |
Sounds good ... essentially a type of fondue, but I like the idea of rolling the cooked beef with salad, mint, and cucumber in rice paper. The sauce sounds yummy also! And all of it fairly low-fat. Nice!

I ate a plate of sticky rice and Azuki red beans (said my mom because I didn't know what I ate :P). However, I searched for a picture and found the same pix, which turn out to be sticky rice with black urad beans. I ate it with braised tofu and boiled eggs and pickled veggies.

I don't have the patience to eat pomegranates. They are super beautiful, though.
|
I like Adzuki beans (variation on spelling you find here)
They are very good for you. I'll have to put them on my shopping list again. Chocolatl, I have pomegranate as a treat. Meaning I buy it as a ready to eat pack with a spoon. And I do eat the seeds too, so the only difficult part is spooning it into my mouth. Probably breaks lots of fine dining rules ;) Is pomegranate popular in Vietnamese cuisine? My Indian/ Pakistani friends adored it, it was a standard in desserts and cordial. Shudder. Their cultural version of sweet is far too sweet for me. Actually add Middle Eastern to that. I may add more other regions of the world after a good think. Me, I like a cheeseboard after a meal. Sorry if your Mum just happened to pick it up at the market as my Mum would - I know so little of Far East culture I am always hungry to learn. See what I did there? One of the boys in class 2a brought in some Indian sweets for a lesson on celebrations in religion (Diwali in his case). I joked that I was missing out, working in Key Stage 2 in the afternoons. He's such a beautiful, solemn little boy with huge eyes and a smile that changes his face - when he shows it. "Oh, Mrs M can save one for you I'm sure" he assured me. I told him kindly that I was just joking, and I'd rather his classmates enjoyed them. Well it was the truth in a gentle way. |

Chocolat: I know what you mean by patience. It was time-consuming to open up the fruit. And dirty too. I changed into a shirt that I can bleach because it would be inevitable that red juice would squirt on you. I would just rather drink the juice. :D Now, I better go pick up the pomelo someone gave me last night. I forgot it there when went home. She told me it was the perfect blend of sweet and tartness. :D Ahh...yes. The next picture is Azuki red beans sweet soup. (post for you, Sundae :)) I'll explain what "sweet soup" is for those who don't know later this afternoon. |

That Adzuki soup looks... murky.
Please reassure me about sweet soup later. The won ton soup looks yummy though. |
Hehe...yes, it does. This explains a little about Vietnamese "sweet soup." I will look up the recipe for the Azuki red bean sweet soup and perhaps that will explain why the water is so "murky," hehe. :p:

Amberella or java plum. I think there other names to the fruit. The Viet name is "trai coc." This is already peeled. A person eats it with crushed fresh chili peppers with salt.Attachment 41928

Cellophane noodles?
|
One website calls it "clear glass noodle soup." It's rice noodle but it's chewier and stickier.
Foot: you don't have to be Vietnamese to eat Vietnamese food. Just move to where there are lots of Vietnam restaurants like Houston or Little Saigon Bolsa, California. :D |
OK, rice noodle. I think the Cellophane noodles are made from beans.
|
life is unfair
|
I would have called that vermicelli noodles in pho soup, just based on the picture. But I have limited experience with Vietnamese food in general.
|

Hmm...I don't think that's rice vermicelli. Here's an example of the noodle I grabbed from the net.
|

I just grabbed this from the net. The Viet name for the noodle is "hu tieu."
Hu Tieu The Noodles (Bánh Hủ Tiếu) There is really only one kind of noodle that is called hu tieu noodle. Once cooked, it is the chewy, clear and somewhat sticky kind that is made of tapioca, not rice. On a shelf in a food market, at first glance it may look like banh pho noodle, just not as white in color, or maybe a thicker bún (vermicelli.) But unless it is specifically labeled “Hủ Tiếu,” it isn’t. Like banh pho noodles and bun, bánh hủ tiếu noodles can be purchase dry or fresh. |

You grab that picture it might grab you back. Delish as always. What was lunch on the 6th December? You didn't come back to say. My guess is grated carrot, strawberry leaves and turkey meatloaf. I may be wrong. |
The dish with cellophane noodle was Dec. 6th's lunch. :D
And today, I had chicken "pho," chicken noodle soup. This is eaten with rice vermicelli. :) I was in a hurry, so I put all the greens in before I poured the broth in. By the time I grabbed my phone, the mints have turned brown. :( Well, just looks ugly, still can be eaten. :D |

Is this a restaurant, the back room of a restaurant, or like a private someone making meals for people that come to her house? I wonder because it doesn't look like you picked it up and brought it home to eat.
|
There's a communal kitchen where there's a different person cook each day. I come to pick up my food each day. If I'm not home during food pick-up time, I can call and ask them to set it aside for me. I bring my food home in containers. I then set it out nice and pretty so I can take pictures for y'all. :D If it weren't for you guys, I would sometimes just dump my food in a big bowl and eat.
|
FINALLY I can criticize something in this blog:
Those tomatoes look like hell. There goes Lola's foodblog plummeting to the ground off its pedestal. neener neener neener |
Damn, now the Cellar is getting blamed for all those dirty dishes. :lol2:

I don't mind doing dishes, as long as I don't have to cook. :p

Phew. Lola eats the pretty food but doesn't cook it.
As opposed to the pretty things she cooks but probably doesn't eat. She is not completely omnipotent! Nope, doesn't reassure me. I would still feel like an enormous pale jellyfish beside you :( Doesn't stop me wanting to meet and eat with you though! Those are great quality photos from a phone, well done. Take some more of yourself :) |
