He would have to scale up. I don't know if the bigger tape works the same.

Spexxvet 11-11-2009 10:54 AM

He could make one of his creation about 10 feet in diameter. Cool.

xoxoxoBruce 11-11-2009 10:57 AM

I'm picturing a rhombic enneacontahedron 45 feet high... and a stiff breeze.
It would put the "DUCK!!", in duck-tape*.

*Yes I know it's duct-tape, not duck-tape, although there is a Duck brand of duct-tape, which would make it Duck-tape, but it's shitty duct-tape and not allowed by the rules of this contest.

Clodfobble 11-11-2009 10:59 AM

Dude, HM. We would all go vote for you! Make a large-scale one, say a foot in diameter or so.

Look it up.....it actually began as Duck Tape.

edit....i looked it up for you:

Etymology

The origin of the term "duct tape" is the subject of some disagreement.
One view[17] is that it was called "duck tape" by WWII soldiers either because it resembled strips of cotton duck or because the waterproof quality of the tape contributed to the name, by analogy to the water-shedding quality of a duck's plumage. Under this view, soldiers returning home from the war found uses for duck tape around the house, where tents were forgotten and ductwork needed sealing, not ammunition cases. Other proponents of this view point to older references to non-adhesive cotton duck tape used in Venetian blinds, suggesting that the name was carried over to the adhesive product. The Oxford English Dictionary says that perhaps "duct tape" was originally "duck tape". This view is summarized most notably in a New York Times article by etymologist William Safire in March 2003. Safire cites use of the term "cotton duck tape" in a 1945 advertisement for surplus government property.[18] The Oxford English Dictionary gives a 1902 quotation for "100,000 yards of cotton duck tape" being used to protect the cables of the Brooklyn Bridge.[19] Thus a fabric duck tape was available to which an adhesive could have been added.

xoxoxoBruce 11-11-2009 11:20 AM

I ain't buying that. :headshake

This view was summarized most notably in a Boston Globe article by etymologist Jan Freeman, also in March 2003.[21]
In any case, whether it is an error or a preservation of the original usage, the term "duck tape" is sometimes used for the product today.[22] Duck Tape is also a brand name for this product in some countries.

xoxoxoBruce 11-11-2009 11:28 AM

I'm firmly in the Duct camp, although the guy that installed my central air explained the only good duct tape is the aluminum/fiber mesh stuff, that's nothing like the duct tape we know.

xoxoxoBruce 11-14-2009 01:37 PM

Modular Origami, similar to HM's tape creations.

glatt 11-14-2009 05:06 PM

where is HM? I'm all excited about this contest and he's off elsewhere.

Happy Monkey 11-24-2009 01:32 PM

I've been on travel. Just got back from a month in Kansas.

I may look into that contest, but I'd be well behind in cumulative clicks by the time I got anything made out of a new tape brand.

DanaC 11-24-2009 01:35 PM

oh! Hiya HM. There's a space waiting for you in the I Know Where I am, thread.

Happy Monkey 11-25-2009 10:17 PM

Well, I found the tape, after looking in several stores.

Did you know Office Depot doesn't take manufacturers' coupons? Or at least this one didn't.

xoxoxoBruce 11-25-2009 11:02 PM

Do you have that feeling you're not in Kansas any more? :haha:

ZenGum 11-26-2009 03:45 AM

One of the tape manufacturing companies should release a line of duct-style tape marketed as McGyver Tape.

Happy Monkey 12-22-2009 10:00 PM

I'm picking out the photos to enter into the contest...

In the meantime, here's this year's Christmas present. Due to travel and the contest, there's just the one this year:

I like how you sign your name. It reads the same upside down as right side up. But you probably knew that already.

Clodfobble 12-23-2009 08:17 AM

Good catch, glatt!

classicman 12-23-2009 10:31 AM

That is so beautiful! HM, you gotta be able to do something with them professionally. I would buy one without hesitation, they are just amazing.

xoxoxoBruce 12-23-2009 02:28 PM

They're so labor/time intensive, he'd have to charge a fortune.

Yeah, I got a book of ambigrams when I was a kid, and figured one out for myself. Luckily, all but the "tth" was pretty much a freebie.

Pretty much. Some time I should actually time some of the easier ones, to see exactly how much of a fortune.

Unfortunately, I get the most enjoyment out of figuring out new ones. Even if I figured out a good price point, I'm worried it would become a chore.

Happy Monkey 12-29-2009 01:26 PM

My entry has been accepted at the Off the Roll contest! Please vote for me and spread the word!

Thanks!

glatt 12-29-2009 01:44 PM

I voted. It looks like you can vote each day.

I went to check out the competition, and only saw 6 other people had entered. That can't be right, can it? Yours is clearly the best.

classicman 12-29-2009 01:46 PM

Done!

Thanks!

It certainly appears that they anticipated more entries than they've had so far.

xoxoxoBruce 12-29-2009 02:02 PM

The other entries are completely different animals, wholly different art forms.

Remember folks, voting once a day makes you look younger, adds years to your life span, and supercharges your sex life. No, really.;)

glatt 12-29-2009 02:07 PM

The other entries are pretty much copies of the types of example sculptures Scotch came up with. Happy Monkey's is original.

classicman 12-29-2009 02:07 PM

Oh, and good luck! let me state this now . . .
A daily reminder is requested. I will certainly vote, but I will also forget.

ETA: I got 4 in there using my old junk email addresses.

wolf 12-29-2009 02:07 PM

It appears that Brittany, who is probably under 18, has a lot of myspace friends or something, because her work is clearly unspectacular.

glatt 12-29-2009 02:09 PM

Maybe a reminder thread? It will make this thread messy if there is a bump to it each day.

Happy Monkey 12-30-2009 06:05 PM

Looks like you can't vote again. I'll bump this thread occasionally for those who missed it this time.

Thanks to everyone who voted!

Griff 12-30-2009 06:41 PM

Done!

Good idea - I voted 3 times. Good luck, HM.

kerosene 12-30-2009 07:10 PM

I did the same and I tweeted about it on twitter.

Happy Monkey 12-30-2009 07:11 PM

I'm up to #2! Thanks all!

glatt 12-30-2009 07:28 PM

My reading of the rules says that the votes are worth 10% in the final judging. So they are important, but HM's excellent pictures of the sculpture floating above the snow, his unique design, and the fine craftsmanship all count for more.

But I voted 3 times too.

monster 12-31-2009 05:21 PM

hey is it just me or is MB in third place. We need to work this a little....

Happy Monkey 12-31-2009 11:48 PM

Trapeze guy has really surged in the last two days. But I'm a few votes from overtaking the boots.

xoxoxoBruce 01-02-2010 03:55 AM

20 ahead of the boots in solid second place, but 131 behind first place trapeze guy. He must be networking his ass off.

monster 01-02-2010 12:26 PM

apparently there is no verification of your email address, even if you make a typo in it your vote still counts... if you catch my drift..... although probably best do do only a few in one session to avoid flooding concerns....

jinx 01-02-2010 12:38 PM

Yeah I just did that about 5 times...

monster 01-02-2010 02:31 PM

ooh look it's up to 229 now

classicman 01-02-2010 09:30 PM

gotcha five more.

Here is the link for others to vote

monster 01-02-2010 11:38 PM

hmmm trapeze is increasing by the same amount. vote more, peeps!

Happy Monkey 01-02-2010 11:42 PM

Looking good. Thanks!

I wish I'd been boingboinged and microsiervosed a bit later than I was... I got thousands of Flickr hits from each of them.

glatt 01-05-2010 03:06 PM

It's up to 327, but everyone please vote.

classicman 01-05-2010 03:52 PM

ok there's at least 5 more . . . C'mon people take 30 seconds and vote!

How do you know what the vote totals are?

monster 01-05-2010 04:02 PM

it says on each entry

lumberjim 01-05-2010 04:07 PM

and you can sort by votes. He's in 2nd place behind the trapeeze artist cast.

Happy Monkey 01-05-2010 06:40 PM

Thanks!

There's a strange new entry today...

monster 01-05-2010 10:14 PM

oooh less than 100 behind the trapeze.

their vote checking thing is so simplistic it has me and my friend a@sshole wondering why they bother.....

monster 01-05-2010 10:18 PM

doesn't even need an ampersand /disgusted IT grad

monster 01-05-2010 10:22 PM

ooh, it appears i persuaded my friends The Alphabet to vote for you, one by one. How nice of them. I even let them use my computer. They love bright colors, you know -find the other stuff wishy-washy.

xoxoxoBruce 01-05-2010 10:22 PM

Some days it will let me vote, some days it won't.

monster 01-05-2010 10:24 PM

are you using the same email addy?

xoxoxoBruce 01-05-2010 10:25 PM

Yes

Clodfobble 01-05-2010 10:25 PM

There have been a few times that it told me I couldn't vote anymore, even with new email addresses. But then it lets me vote the next day.

xoxoxoBruce 01-05-2010 10:26 PM

Yes, exactly.
