Where is that, Woody? At first I assumed it was a bridge/overpass, but after a bit I noticed it's a roof. Maybe inside, or maybe a shed roof, up against a building.

I just learned that the blue tail (and sometimes the lines) on an American Five-Lined Skink indicates a juvenile.
|
I wonder: if skink-predators vision is hyper-blue-sensitive,
maybe it's a survival trait so the predator goes for the tail and it breaks away allowing the young'un to escape and grow up to be a big skink. |
I also learned that skinks can voluntarily/spontaneously pop-off their tail, or any section/length thereof, in order to evade predators. I thought it pulled off only when they were caught by it.
Also, the tail continues writhing/wriggling to draw the predator's attn from the escaping skink. |

Very nice. You have an excellent view.

I guess to a guy from Washington, only seeing three bullshit machines must be a relief!

The picture isn't all that neat, but I'm just happy I manage to capture a balloon.
We were ready with the cameras because we thought it was going to come over our house, but the very slight wind which we couldn't even feel on the ground sent it away to the South-West of us. |
Good catch, Sundae! Better than mine.

Here's a photo of another juvenile wren. He flew into the window screen and got his feet stuck. He was hanging upside down when I found him.

Looks close.
Think she'll be hanging out that close when hunting season starts? |

You'll have the chance to take that perfect shot ... the one where the doe raises her head, looks toward you ... you've drawn, and now you release ... she bounds forward, stops, hesitates, lowers her head and grabs a mouthful of grass ... raises her head and looks back at you ... then drops, the grass still in her mouth, not comprehending what's happened. She dies with no anticipation of danger, no fear, no stress. The perfect shot.
Or so I've been told ... |
You left out the part where you give thanks.
To the doe, for her scarifice... To the forest, for the doe... To God, for the forest... |

Nice waterfall pics. I like the vintage one. Old pictures rock.

I can't document this, but I feel you don't have enough fingers to count
the number of people that have fallen off the trail that runs up to the top of the falls. Dogs too. Sometimes one causes the other to slip... sometimes Darwin plays a role. . |

The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium (Home of Jack Hanna!)
I fell in love with the Polar Bears. They were all above water and I was watching them (from the above ground viewing) as they went towards the water. I knew they were getting ready to jump in so I hurried down to the underwater viewing area. I was using my video on my phone and ALMOST caught the first one's jump, but I freaked out. I do have video of one eating up a fish he just decapitated. They're amazing creatures. They were sitting on top of the curved plexi-glass in order to be right in front of the aboveground viewing level. Like they wanted to have their pictures taken! Yes, I know they just wanted to eat us all but they look so darn cuddly. I have to figure out how to get my video onto my computer...file is too big to send through gmail. |
More Bears! And Jack!

Those are cool shots! We have no polar bears at our zoo.
|
Ah yes, they look so cute, like big fluffy dogs with soft pleading eyes, begging you to come innnn and joinnnn them .... so they can eat you. :yum:
I've been told (by a friend who's lived all his adult life in the arctic) that polar bears will actively hunt humans. They're not afraid of anything; they don't have to be. Everything (everyone) is on the menu. |
I've always heard that the polar bear is the only animal that will willingly, and, knowingly hunt a human. Other instances of human-hunting are usually wounded animals, or rabid, or otherwise diseased, or starving.
That is an apex predator, right there. |
I can't remember the guy's name, but, the old man used to watch a hunting show on one of the outdoor-type channels, where the guy's motto was "I won't hunt anything that can't hunt me back."
